  1. Strange how plummber ran collie greyhounds an promoted and peddled the like but thought the saluki was the better option over greyhound wonder if he put himself in a trance like state to come up with that one ?
  2. Interesting read lads fair play least you all kissed an made up. I know this is the terriers section an I have no business being in here as I’m a lurcher man but interested in all the stuff on breeding an how other guys/gals do things as id like to keep the best of the best type of Lurcher I got going as long as I can so it’s good to hear how others do things ??
  3. Why doesn’t it do them no favours mate? What can happen?
  4. There’s always gonna be doubts with any young dog because you don’t actually know no matter what the breeding until that young un is up an running doing it to put any doubts to rest or not put to rest. I get what ya mean though
  5. I don’t feel bad for people who get sucked in by some of these wonder litters ??I say it’s there money they payed it an took there chances like every litter put on the ground there’s no guarantees there gonna get a decent dog anyway even if it’s bred out of good gear or not all litters are a short straws game it comes down to if your willing to play ya gotta be in it to win it
  6. Merry Christmas to you to fella
  7. Think it’s safe to say any lurcher would improve the deerhound if it’s for use in the field just like say a collie/beddy/bull improves the greyhounds use in the field I’m still convinced that a Lurcher would be a better option to add to a deerhound to improve it
  8. I read your write up mate fair play. my self I stuggle to get down in writing what I’m actually on about I write a lot of replys that I delete because I feel it’s to long a reply to something simple plus I get told it’s a sermon ? it don’t bother me but think what’s the point in the end as every reply you give most take it as a insult
  9. I can see why deerhound xs are out of favour what can they do that smaller modern day Lurchers can’t do?
  10. I don’t think no one could do a strain of deerhound Lurchers that topped out at 25-26 there always going to be bigger if based on deerhound as the base of the strain but there’s plenty of Lurcher types out there with old school deerhound blood still in there veins producing 25-26tts dogs an bitches a couple of inch’s smaller normally. Tbh I don’t know what modern deerhound greyhound could offer in modern times that run of the mill Lurchers of today don’t already offer the thing is modern day Lurchers are doing the old deerhound xs job pretty efficiently ie foxing an dropping deer.I love tradit
  11. I think most of the useful deerhound xs were put in to other crosses along the way till what we have today just Lurcher to lurcher bred mongrely things that contain abit of everything
  12. Like the idea of beddy xs to deerhound x greyhounds scruffy racey dogs who can do a bit ive got a young bitch here with deerhound in her breeding on both sides you couldn’t see it but it’s in there but it was way back it was put in I’m guessing back in the day deerhound xs were put in to most run of the mill working Lurchers till they dropped from favour because of more tailored dogs for jobs
  13. Sometimes it’s hard to get out there what your actually on about so it has to be noted down like a SA
  14. Even when people do a out cross they get given stick about them not being beddys then same people moan the gene pool is small it’s a none winner . I’ve alway found strange you can get a straight beddy an it’s dirt you can get a outcross an it does what a beddys meant to do
  15. I remember with canarys a canarys breeding span was avarage about 5yrs so you could inbreed 5gen till you would need to add new blood but it’d be a close relative but with a dog an this 5yr graft policy and a dog living to 10-12yr old you’d only get to the second maybe 3rgen of the original dog for inbreeding before it snuffed it
  16. I do find all this line breeding stuff really interesting but think you'd have to surround your self with the right sort of people with the same enthusiasm of the cross you tend to line breed the litter wastage would be out this world an the amount of pups produced would be bonkers i still can’t fully get my head round the lurcher world 5yr rule for bitches
  17. Used to practice inbeeding/line breeding with red canarys for showing it does work but with with avian the turn over is a lot faster as you know being a pigeon man it’s year to year with the dogs it’s a long process if done correctly an goals can’t change from the beginning?? I’d like to dabble in close bred stuff from what I got now but think it’s to much of a challenge if your trying to keep best worker to best worker an close breed I think you gotta choose one or the other as a lot of kennel blindness comes in to it when close breeding
  18. And I bet the dogs are no different to what you or I or any one on here have in our possession
  19. How’s the original poster got on with this exercise
  20. I don’t think you can compare terriers to each other they all got different usage for different jobs used for Lurcher breeding mate the other types are used for different reasons look at bull greyhound the bulls or Wheaton not a catch dog of fox or deer until hybridise then your like hey up now we cooking we got a good strong dog fast enough with holding power or enough bite to kill quickly it’s like all raw ingredients they feck all till mixed together but most hybrids there’s always something missing it’s never ending like bull greyhounds most get put to courseing dogs straight beddys are fe
  21. Nothing! the gamble is the same as any cross it’s personal preference I like that there pleasing to the eye tend to have a good coat that can hide sins don’t advertise nothing an are well constructed for a bit of everything there not set dogs for jobs an they tend to have a good nose pretty good prey drive fit in to family life well an working life they can switch off from work I like the whole jackle an Hyde persona they have easy to enough to train. I think there the same as any cross they have there following they have there raters an haters. I’ve said before on here id never personally own
  22. Guaranteed your sold black neck now your in our beddy x gang your be happy to stick with the beddy xs ??
  23. Same as that now mate beddy blood in a lurcher is a funny thing once you have one your happy with you may stray for a bit with other crosses but always find your self thinking or wanting another or even owning one an comparing it back to that dog
  24. Wouldn’t be without terrier blood in a lurcher IMO be it bull, beddy or Wheaton
