Romany ( i think) made an interesting point a while ago, he mentioned that he kept tallys of game run and game caught for himself and for all those he had been out with. He said that often, when asked at a later date (years maybe), the dogs owners were often way way out in what they remembered their dogs catching, adding many to the bag. And there is nothing wrong with keeping a count for your own sake. I write down the numbers of rabbits ferreted on every trip, a long with where it was etc, so that i can accuratly tell the land owner and so that i can keep track myself of what land he

so you think a dog that catches 10 out of 10 and then burns out is better than one that plods on steady all night , missing a few , but ends up with 30 or 40. its whats in the bag at the end of the night that counts like whin said , but if i was whin i would get rid of my blinkers No i don't think that! Did i say so? The problem with this fecking section of the site, is it is full of folk who add (in their own mind) things to what you say and then try and argue with you about it. All i was suggesting is that, the bag at the end of the night os not the only and best way to judge

. . . . . ?

no way can you rate a dog on catch to slip ratio  theres abit more to it than that the dog that caught 20 from 100 could have ran on totally different terrain/conditions than the dog who did 10 from 12. and the latter could still be the better dog. I know that there is a lot more than that, but it IS a factor that needs looking at it's not 'total bollocks' as dear uncle whin would have us believe.
-
According to Whin, everybody running dogs is an 'ameuter' apart from him and his mystery group of friends, and in his eyes their dogs are not the 'real deal'. Probably because they are not trying to feed the village, in the cold cold winter of blah blah blah, up on land so tough it would make a 'dale dog' cry . . . . . You need some new lines mate, these ones are getting old. P.S - Of course ratio makes a difference. A dog that catches 20 from 100 slips is not up to the form of the dog that catches 10 from 12 slips is it?
-
Not strictly true. As hard as they work, they don't necessarily run on concrete.

Cheers guys. SR - The thing with the first place we went, is that there were not really even any sets to check. Even the dog was bored. He was desperatly looking for tree rats to chase. Oh and he saw his first pig (of the pork kind) and tried to chew it's ear. Mind you, i do feed him a lot of pigs ears

Hope you get well soon mate. Both for your sake, and because i need some of your fine nets

Sounds great on all fronts mate I'm up for the trip up whenever, it's not that bad, especially with johnnyboy for company, the miles fly by. I'm not going to HOW, unfortunatly. Give my regards to lee and lala legend!
-
Aye lads, you are right, it's not all about numbers, and it was an enjoyable day company wise, but you could tell the lad was getting fed up. He soon changed though, when his kit popped out the first rabbit And he's getting better and quicker at setting nets etc Malc1 - you and lee don't need much teaching mate, you seem naturals to me. We still on for next Sunday?

Looks a strong pup! Half x?
-
Now THAT is a smart idea buddy! Might have to get an old backpack and customize myself something similar for my 'off piste' trips
-
I don't think he realised rabbits bit To be fair i fecking hate this weather, i want frost and freezing temps!
-
tegater - aye, i'm glad he had a bit of sport at the end, and he was made up to see his kits bolting rabbits (as was i, especially as i bred one of them!), but for most of the day we were just trudging around. . . . and yep, he rides with the hunt, shoots, fishes, ferrets, and wants a running dog
-
Aye mate, at least we bagged something. The frustrating thing was, it was a toss up between going to his new bit, or one of mine. And i got talked around I was seriously contemplating getting up at silly o clock tomo morn and driving down your way for a days mooching. But i'm fecking knackered.

I'm after a trained lab

A lab is ideal if you want help with the eating -
Got a call last night from Young Tom (the lad Johnnyboy and i have been taking out), asking if i fancied a few hours out with the ferrets today. He wanted to check out some land he had got, and try to give his young ferrets some more experiance. To cut a long story short we walked for hours around this piece of land and saw very little sign of rabbits. I kind of knew when we got there and started, and should have made the decision to go elsewhere, but kept thinking that around the next corner we might hit something. I could see the lad was pretty dejected, so on the way back to mine, t

Do you honestly believe that a Lurcher, (or any breed of dog, for that matter), can show that degree of intelligence.... Remembering the lay of the land, where the quarry will be and where it will run to ???? I despair at some of the things that are said on this site at times ! Cheers. I like a lot of what you post, and agree with most of it, but recently you've been a bit of a miserable b*****d. No offence intended, just pointing it out. The lad made a sensible enough point, day time or night time, if you work the same land enough, some dogs DO, start to learn the patterns,

KEEPING ACTIVE TILL A WINDY NITE
Ideation replied to robert michem's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Fairplay mate A fine wouldn't really bother me, it's the mad farmer with the shotgun kind of trouble that tends to give me the shivers Good bag though -
KEEPING ACTIVE TILL A WINDY NITE
Ideation replied to robert michem's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Well done mate. Do you never get bothered doing it day time with the ferrets? -
Then unfortunatly it has probably been badly entered, or is just like that. Only thing you could try is slowly building up its confidence with easy rabbits, take it ferreting, give it squatters etc. No long slips, don't out match it etc.
-
Does it yap every run, all run? Or just at the start? How fit is it? How much work has it seen?
-
Cheers Skycat, he's all chest and legs, he's a fair size for a whippet KR - He can mooch all day, and can give a few good runs, but he isn't really 'sprint fit' if that makes sense. As i use him for mainly for ferreting and mooching, he doesn't do much reppetative sprinting, like you would with lamping. So i need to work on that, mainly to improve his cardio.
