  1. Agree with most things you say . . . . . . but not going ferreting because you cannot afford a locator, or suggesting that one does not value ones ferrets if one doesnt use one . . . . . . is bollocks! We are now in the 21st century our predcessors use to work without such technologly but we now have the chance to increase the chance of retriving a lossed ferret with £200 or cash FACT. I feel that if a hunter can afford a computer and internet connection then his priorty is not with his ferrets as I would willing give up my luxuries in life to fund a must have tool in todays modern fer
  2. Also driving around on a quad because your to lazy to walk dosen't make you a "top ferreter" either. I've got a quad - can i be a top ferreter please ? No mate you're far to humble. Some folk make me laugh mate, i'd love to send then up the mountain or into the woods for a day and see how many they caught (and love that they think that every rabbit you catch is posted on here?)

  4. We are not talking about lamping. We are talking about ferreting. Two diffrent things, and many dogs see a lot more bunnies at night than day, due to being able to access different land during the night / day. I was thinking more along the lines of ferreting / mouching, there is plenty of land where to be honest a fairly inept net layer, with no dog, and half arsed ferrets could bolt 50 bunnies and catch 20 of them. Then there is someone with a finely tuned team of man / dog / ferret of takes a dozen in a day out of a dozen rabbits found above or below ground all day. The latter man would
  5. Decided to head back over to England today, to have a catch up and bit of ferreting with Malc1. Today there was a bit of a team switch up. My girlfriend is here at the moment, and johnnyboy couldn't make it. So me and the missus had a bit more of a lie in than usual this morning and were away at about quarter past seven, with Finn and 3 of my jills on board. I was a bit unsure about taking finn as he banged his foot the other day (yesterday?) and it was a bit swollen last night, however today he seemed ok, so he went in the car. After a fair drive with a bacon, sausage and hashbrown r
  6. Maybe put it this way - A locator is not a neccessity, but it IS a neccessity of you wish to be throughly efficient in your ferreting.
  7. Large numbers of rabbits caught do not neccessarily mean that you have a good / successful / efficient ferreting team of people / dogs / ferrets. The rabbit density of the area and the ratio of rabbits seen / found to ground and those caught need to be looked at. Discuss?

  9. Some folk live in towns / cities and only really get the chance to go hunting in the nights, so their dogs are not really experianced with daytime hunting i guess. And without experiance etc, no dog can get that good . . . . just my take on it.
  10. Aye it's been warm here, for winter. But you try getting me out ferreting in the middle of summer. . . . . . f**k that! And lamping with the ground baked hard, chasing scutties. . . . .no thankyou!
  11. I'm sure i will get shot down for this, but i use my whippet for this exact task and he's fecking dynamite at it . . . . .
  12. The number of times the ferret has gone quiet and a scan with the disco carrot has led to a quick 1 ft dig in soft soil has convinced me they are a great idea, rabbits and ferrets out and moving onwards in ten mins, rather than 2 hours. . . . . . .
  13. Good luck carl matey! And good luck milly! Sure she will do you proud as usual!

  17. Yes mate, early morning is always a good time, probably the best. But, you never know at any time, what might suddenly get up, or where you are going to end up going, following the dog/s.
  18. Yes mate, 'pure' whippet. Cheers whin, can't beat a good stroll
  19. Well done mate, it's a great way to spend a day if you have the right land for it!
  20. Was going to go ferreting today, but i stayed up pretty late last night and had a few beers, so had a lie in this morn, and decided just to go for an old fashioned mooch this afternoon with the mutt. Decided to stay local, so jumped the gate opposite the house, and headed off a long a stream, where there is some good thick bramble patches, and rough grass, and often there is a chance you will put up the odd rabbit or pheasant, and you never know, maybe even old charlie. The start of the mooch was fairly quiet, with the odd pheasant putting in a noisy appearance, and one almost being ca
  21. Like lanesra says - anyone who says 'a dog poking it's head in a hole means jack' doesnt really grasp the wonders of a ferreting / mooching dog. I don't really lamp mine much, but he can hold his own stamina, speed and spotting wise, although in truth, he can hunt up like a b*****d. However what he excells at is mooching about and finding game, hunting day time and ferreting. Any dog with a decent chunk of sighthound blood, and brought on right, can run a beam and catch rabbits (or it should). But there are plenty of good lamp dogs who couldnt find quarry in a fecking telephone box daytime.
