Just a few photos and a wee update.
Ideation replied to Ideation's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Well, this week, i have been struggling with a broken spinner and quad, no food to fill hoppers, guns who say they will / have done things that they never do. . . . and the rain But still, it beats sitting inside! Cheers both! ali - i'm enjoying it, but not sure if this is to be my first and last season, i never really planned to be a keeper, just wanted to help get them out a hole. So far the guns are buzzing. -

Cheers both. Gooner - We put down 3000 phesants and 200 Partridge. Also we have a decent population of wild duck, on and coming into a number of ponds. We've been flighting in the evenings as well and have had decent returns there. The normal return in a good year has been around 650 last year was around 300, its a tricky place to control birds as its big, but long, and has lots of woodland, valleys etc There are no surrounding shoots that release birds and the farms that border it for the most part, plant big fields of maize and other crops, which as you can imagine draws the birds lik -

Cheers lads, its a big area to do on your own, but can produce some really fantastic birds, very high, very sporting. The fourth photo down shows an idea of what the drives are like, the birds coming from above where i am standing and the gun line being in the field below where you can see sheep. Hopefully the season will continue going well, we shall see. Even 50 tomorrow would still be good But i'd rather 70-100 -
Some of you will know that this year i took on the job of keeper on a local estate/shoot, which had a really bad season last year. I have never worked as a keeper before, but grew up around shoots as my dad was a pretty good spaniel breeder and trainer/trialer. So i figured i would toss my hat into the ring, and after having a meeting, they decided to go with me as part time keeper (full time job, part time hours haha) We got our birds in, in July, and i spent the first three months of the job feeding the birds, trying to change some of the habitats (with the working guns), killing vermin

We get our birds in July and start shooting in October, and they are well grown, strong birds by the time shooting starts.

Was it not something like, take the best you got to the best you can find, or don't bother?

40 quid on a lead or collar.. your a rich hippy JAI.. lol Think a pair of terrier couples etc are 40 quid from ss. Not that much if your dogs are out a lot. I spent 20 quid on a collar for mine, and if he wears it for ten years, thats 2 quid a year. . . . . . .

me and LL are travellers ,no one has need to give me a wide berth It wasn't meant like that mate, just that, a lot of folk run a mile at the thought of travelling folk, because of these kinds of things, obviously there are good and bad in all types, but you know what i'm saying.

Now i know what you are saying . . . . But with any kind of sport, including hunting, having good, fit for purpose gear, can make life a lot easier! A good locator is essential i would say. Spending 20-40 quid on good leads, couples, slips, collars whatever for your dogs to wear day in day out, isnt an extravagance! And a decent 4x4 would be very handy if you do a lot of hunting on large parcels of land, especially terrier work. WHile i agree, that how you look, isnt important, having the right tools for the job is, and whilst snobbery can be a pain, inverted snobbers can b

Poaching IanB's Permission..part ll ..

Well done mate, shes getting there now, and lstarting to look fit. -
Lamping lad and Goldy. That;s the problem, why should a man have to go and fight to get his dog back? These lowlife scumbags rely on fear and intimidation to stop folk doing owt. And the travelling community wonders why folk give them a wide berth.

"Sporting" Dog Breeds; Becoming more popular as pets ?
Ideation replied to chartpolski's topic in General Talk
Wastage???? i have never heard of such a word being used to describe pups in a litter, anyone who considers any pup wastage shouldn't be breeding, if you breed a litter of pups regardless of numbers then every single individual pup in that litter is your responsibility!! your responsibility to rehome in a responsible loving caring home where the pup wont be abused or flung out or passed around for all of its life, i would rather see a whole litter of lurcher pups in "pet" homes happy being cared for and loved than a very high percentage of the poor bloody dogs and pups advertised on here and p -
On now. . . . .and bad news as usual. Five chavs with dogs, mauling a deer in the open, middle of the day. Trackies and cammo. Caught bang to rights.

I'm not so sure, and i know how many folk will tell me i'm wrong. . . . . . but still.

I have a stop net made by albert64 on here, and its very well made and does the job very well, i would highly recommend him I like stop nets, but i really dont get on with long nets.
-
Aye, i agree, i go most places on foot (on the actual land) and i can carry everything i need to do up to about 70 holes on my back.
-
Cheers pal, its much harder this year, there isn't much worth doing local, so i have to travel, but needs must!
-
I'll pop it in the game bag next time i'm there mate

I hunt rabbits all over the country . . . . and they are down everywhere. Even places with a decent population, are still less over run than previous years!
-
Not a chance you could use one on most of our land.

Like Dan said, the beaters need to be vigilaint, take it slow, lead up dogs, stop the line, and trickle the birds out. And keep quiet.
