Thinking about applying for FAC
JonathanKent replied to jmj121's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As Paulus and others have said, when you put in your application you can put down as many calibres as you have a good reason to possess. Once you have your licence you can then apply for a variation, its the same form as the original application but you don't need to give further refferences or proof of land. As has been said the variation will cost you a further £26 and you can apply for as many further calibres as you can demonstrate a good reason for owning. With regards your other thread concerning mentoring, you could always think of joining a local rifle club so you can get some -
UK shooters get ripped off
JonathanKent replied to JonathanKent's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I hear what your saying about tax. I know we pay VAT on most things we buy, but everything made in the EU and shipped to the states gets import duty, this doesnt happen in the EU. Plus you the have the cost of physically shipping it out to the States so that should equal things up. In no way can it account for something costing over twice what it does in the states, like I say I'm just having a whinge! -
I am afraid I am going to have a whinge (sorry in advance!) Firstly I love the UK, I think we live in one of the most enlightened, welcoming, wonderful countries in the world. We set the standards in so many fields and in so many ways. However.............................. One thing that really, really gets on my t*ts about living in this wonderful country of ours, especially being a country boy and enjoying fieldsports, we get ripped off on everything to do with our sport! My most recent example: I am just about to buy a semi-auto .22LR (just for the range and keep my weihrauc

I would recomend Redfield scopes: http://www.redfield.com/ they are made by leupold as their 'value' brand I have one of their 3-9x50's on my .22 its a good peice of kit and quality glass for the money. No its not as good as my leupolds, but theres not that much in it and it was only £230 and it comes with the Leupold lifetime warranty. And I can tell you that the Leupold warranty is worth ts weight in gold, I had a problem with one of their scopes, I sent it back to them and they sent me a new scope, no questions asked. ATB Jonno

Bennelli all the way. The action works on the recoil of the cartridge rather than hot gases from the barrel. With most semi autos there is a small hole in the barrel which passes hot gasses into the forend to recycle the action, this means the forend action gets chocked full of powder residue and crap which without regular cleaning leads to reliability issues. This also makes cleaning a pain in the arse. ATB Jonno

I have tried CCIs a couple of times in the past and I have never found them to group well. At the moment I am using Winchester super x's, they are ok and have a lot of punch. However I ran out the other day shooting with friends and used some of their Eleys, put it this way, once I run out of winnies I will be buying Eleys in future! ATB Jonno

Go to a couple of gun shops and try as many guns as you can for feel and fit. The gun the fits best and points where your looking is the gun you should buy. With your budget the shotgun world is your lobster! I shoot Brownings as they just seem to fit me and suit my shooting style. My first gun was a very nice Berreta but I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it, don't buy because of the brand, buy what fits you! I would also say don't be put off by second hand guns, just check over well for condition, there are lots of second hand guns out there that have had little or no use.

New to this section of the forum
JonathanKent replied to Nightwish's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Welcome! There is a very wide spread of knowledge on this board, I have found people very welcoming and knowledgable, I hope we can all help with your questions. ATB Jonno -
A lot will depend on what the convictions are for. If I were you and I was in two minds I would pick up the phone and call your local firearms office and have a talk with them and see what they say. Hope that helps Jonno

If you have a search through some recent posts this one gets covered regularly. In my oppinion a .22 and a .17 are two very different tools. I have both and they both have there place. A lot depends on the topography of the land your shooting on and the quarry eg rabbits or crows. ATB Jonno

I have a weihrauch HW60 in .22 which I think is a great rifle, It very well made and the stock is beautiful and the trigger is a lovely 2 stage unit, most of my shooting friends have Anschutz which are great guns too. Everyone on here seems to have CZ's which they seem to rate, I had one and decided it wasn't for me. As above it all comes down to what you fancy and your budget. I also used to have a Ruger 10/22 semi-auto, I liked the gun but I found that it was not consistent enough even though I kept it spotlessly clean. Hope that helps Jonno

JonathanKent replied to JonathanKent's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns

Its £399 all in but includes the scales, powder thrower, manual, press, case trimmer kit, lubing kit etc having had a good look around I think its a good deal and from the reviews good quality kit too. Thanks all Jonno -
Apply for shot gun on FAC.
JonathanKent replied to PLEDGEY's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Other people may know better than me but I would think even for an FAC shotgun you will still need a SGC, if for nothing else than buying ammo. Shotgun ammo is not entered on your ticket like with an FAC nor does it require being locked in a seperate safe like rifle ammo. As far as I am aware the only shotgun ammo that requires entering on your FAC is slug rounds. therefore you would need a sgc to buy cartridges. -
Hi all, I have been shooting for years, but I have never reloaded. I am about to take that step onto the dark side and need some advice!! I have alway believed in you get what you pay for so before I lash out a load of cash I want some experienced heads advice. I am looking at a Lee 4 hole turret press with auto indexing. I have had a long chat with a couple of guys I know who reload and Lee stuff seems to split oppinion. They either say its great and good value or don't touch it its cut price rubbish! I don't want to buy it and in 6 month time want to off load it and replace i

Help needed which shooting pigeons
JonathanKent replied to jas88's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I would agree with the aove, over thinking it will ruin any chance you have of shooting the bird. However in order to get that instinct you need to go and practise the best place to do that is the clay ground. Jonno -
Help needed which shooting pigeons
JonathanKent replied to jas88's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The best thing you can do is get down to your nearest Clay ground and buy yourself a coaching session, its amazing how much your shooting can improve in a very short space of time with a good instructor. ATB Jonno -
Rather than going for two rifles have you thougth of going for one rifle that does both jobs? I know it can split oppinion (especially on the bigger species) but what about the good old .243?? It can throw a lighter bullet faster and flatter than the .223 and on the heavier stuff its legal for all deer species in blighty. I would also suggest your FEO would be more likely to grant you one calibre than two and if you spend the cash on one rifle, scope & Mod set up your going to get something better than splitting the cash over two rifles? .22lr accuracy - paper punching testing
JonathanKent replied to riflehunter583's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not wanting to wade into this discussion but Matt_Hooks said a BC of .123 not calibre. BC means ballistic coefficient, which is a measure of a objects ability to overcome air resistance in flight. -
Firearms certificate question
JonathanKent replied to MR TEA POT's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Its an admin cock up, I suggest when you send it off for renewal or a variation it will not be on it when you get it back! -
first time out with my mate and his shotgun
JonathanKent replied to trinder's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Easy Trinder! The comment wasn't about foxes or rabbits but about the woodcock. Woodcock are game birds and its illegal to shoot them in the dark, it is also illegal to shoot game on a Sunday. All the best Jonno -
Ruger 22/10 possible problem
JonathanKent replied to Simonrees's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I would avoid CCI rounds. I had a 10/22 (got rid of it in favour of a bolt action) it would not group with CCI but mine loved Winchester super x's. I got rid of the 10/22 simple because it wasn't as reliable as I required. ATB Jonno -
S Horsfield a 'Section 1' is any gun which needs to be held on an fire arms certificate (FAC) this ranges from a air-rifle which puts out a pelet at over 12 foot pounds to any gun with a rifled barrel, or a shot gun which hold more than a 3 round capacty all the way up to a tank with a rifled barrel (believe it or not I have 4 friend who all have their tanks on their firearms certificate!!) Hope that helps Jonno

Sorry Paulus but thats not strickly true. I don't wish to muddy the water and over-complicate matters but once you have your FAC your can apply for a variation as you say its £26. However when you do the variation it is not £26 for each change or addition on your £26 variation you could apply for as many calibres or changes as you wish. For example you could have an FAC granted for an FAC airrifle on a small peice of land and then get a load of permission and then on your single £26 variation apply for a .22LR a .17HMR and a .243 or as many calibres as you can rightly justify Sorry
