.22lr vs .17hmr for general rabbit shooting
JonathanKent replied to riflehunter583's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I agree with Kingnewport, this has a lot to do with the land you shoot over, and for me both calibers have a place in my cabinet. They are two very different calibres and accordingly are both usefull in different situations. I have both as I shoot over quite a bit of land and the topography is very different on some of the farms. If you are happy with your .22 and it suits the ground you shoot over I would stick with it. Hope that helps ATB Jonno -
Why are semi-autos frowned on?
JonathanKent replied to gibspoon's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Salop Sniper I agree, in part, with what your saying all guns are potentially leathal weapons. And they are only ever as safe as the persons who is holding them. However, the point about a semi auto on a driven day, or at the clayfield, is that unlike a sxs or an o/u everyone around you cannot see at a glance that the gun is broken and therefore unable to discharge a cartridge. Its not really about how safe you are with your gun, its about other peoples confidence in their fellow guns. As has been said you can get breech flags etc but even these are not as visually obvious as a cle -
Fac application, Bullet quantity
JonathanKent replied to 1888andybhoy's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The allowances vary from person to person on my .17HMR & .22 I have hold 1500 and buy 1000 on my 22.250 I have hold 250 and buy 200. The following is an excert from the BASC guidlines on FAC application: "For .22 rimfire the usual quantity would be 750 or 1,500 rounds, depending on how much shooting you do and how easy it is to get fresh supplies. This will allow you to buy another 500 or 1000 before you run out (see Question 21). For serious target shooters or rabbit controllers the required quantity may well be much greater so that a good stock, (all of one batch number so as to -

Mate dont worry your preaching to the converted, I have a HW60 carbine in .22 and an HW66 in .17HMR! ATB Jonno

Duncan, so your swapping your semi auto for a weihrauch bolt action I am truly shocked!! Sorry mate only pulling your leg! hope the sale goes well. ATB Jonno

Well if its ONLY for fox and you have a 22.250 on your ticket then surely you have answered your own question??

Why are semi-autos frowned on?

I am surprised by this thread. I have a peg on a syndicate shoot there are ten gun (some of the chaps have taken a half gun so take it in turns with a mate) and we lay down birds each year and run the shoot between us. We always give a few days away to friends and often get invited to other shoots in return. We also take a few days on other shoots. We all wear traditional shooting cloths, its especially important on other peoples shoots. Its about showing respect, to the birds, to the gamekeeper who has worked tirelessly all year so you can get a few days sport, to the owners of t -
Sorry, just to clarify, do you have an FAC already or are you waiting for approval of your first FAC? Either way if you can demonstrate a good reason and suitable land over which you have permission to shoot you should get what you want. I know that there are members on here who have been given an open ticket on first grant but again you need good reason (proffessional pest controllers generally) and this is unusual rather than then norm. If its your first grant without very good reason you are unlikely to get an open ticket. I don't have a shotgun slot on my FAC but as I understan

Best scope for a .22 rimfire
JonathanKent replied to Carlowhunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If you have a few more quid to spend I would recomend the Redfield range, they are basically the 'budget' Leupold I have got the 3-9x50 on my .22 and I am well pleased with it I got a good deal on it and paid about £200. If you fancy a Whitetail Classic I was looking at one recentley for my 17HMR (I have a 3-9x50 on it at the moment but want a bit more mag) then Midway has the 6.5-20x50 for £137.86 which is almost half the price my local gunshops sells them for. Hope that helps. Jonno -
But if your set on that case the same one is on Ebay for less dough: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-GUN-CABINET-SHOTGUN-SAFE-NEW-/330563301619?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item4cf71bb0f3 ATB Jonno

My only comment would be 3 guns is not very many, if you have a FAC and a SGC thats at least two guns, once you have a couple you know your going to end up buying more! I would get a bigger cabinet, spend the money once and never worry about it again. I bought mine online from the following: http://www.discountsafes.co.uk/Gun_Cabinets_and_Safes_s/77.htm I couldn't find a 9 gun rifle case cheaper anywhere else and my FEO commented that its one of the sturdiest cabinets he had seen. They delivered it to my door in a couple of days and I got really good service from them. Hope tha

.17hmr browning t bolt
JonathanKent replied to lee8375dogs's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If you want a T-Bolt my local gun shop, Wilson and Wilson in Thanet are one of the main browning dealers: http://www.wilsonandwilsonfieldsports.co.uk/ They have lots of T-Bolts in different set ups, synthetic/wood/carbine/varmint etc they are really good people to deal with too (and no I don't work for them!) ATB Jonno -
I'm not sure what gun prices are like in Ireland but for that sort of money over here you could certainly buy yourself a really nice second hand gun. I am a Brwoning man personally as I find that they fit me nicely and generally point in the dirrection I am looing! For the sort of money you have to second I would look at Berreta's, Brownings, Miruku (same as a Browning but a bit cheaper). If you buy a good second hand gun it will last you for ever and a few years down the line if you look after it you will probably get what you paid for it. Or for the money there are plenty of n

.17hmr browning t bolt
JonathanKent replied to lee8375dogs's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I would agree but then I have seen all the rifles in the article for much cheaper than they are quoting too. I know a gun shop close to me that is selling the T-Bolt for £400. I have also seen the quad for a lot less money too! -

JonathanKent replied to lee8375dogs's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There was recently a group test in Shooting times a couple of weeks ago: http://www.shootingu...ifle_tests.html The T-Bolt came out on top, it's a good article, bit of a shame it didn't include a couple of other rifles; the Weihrauch hw60/hw66 or the savage range. ATB Jonno -
Rebarreling a HW60 .17 hmr
JonathanKent replied to The Duncan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
One small note of warning. I have a friend in the states, though California not Florida, and they are not allowed silencers at all, which is rubbish and pretty much defeats the point of having a rimfire in the first place! Jonno -
Rebarreling a HW60 .17 hmr
JonathanKent replied to The Duncan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Just a thought but why not just PX it against a new one? A good second hand weihrauch on Guntrader is making around the £500 - £600 mark (I would say that I think £600 is a bit ambitious!) and a brand new one is between £600 and £700. So say you sell yours for £550 (as its almost brand new) and buy a new one for £650 you get what you want for £100 and I dont think you will get yours it re-barreled for £100. Plus then you have a brand new unadulterated rifle with the warranty that goes with it. Hope that helps ATB Jonno -
I'm still interested in the scope if you haven't sold the package yet? ATB Jonno
