  1. What a bloody shame, lets hope some of them have a good resistance to it and dont succumb.

Come on Crow, that's a bit strong mate, lets get the lad sorted with this gos, I think his dilemma is a classic one, he has had a harris and he is a bit perplexed by the gos because it is taking a bit longer, and he is making a classic mistake of trying to get it to respond quicker by dropping it,some advice would not go amiss mate, once he gets his head round it I think he will be fine.

Good man, I think that is a sound plan yes mate just 3 or 4 recalls with BIG rewards is the way forwards, he will remember it and act accordingly, and as I said make him a slave to that leather recall lure, you never know when it will be needed to get you out of trouble, and it is getting him chasing, no matter that it does not look like a bird or rabbit, he wont care, once he is comitted to that I will bet you several pints that as soon as you show him a bunny carcass he will be on it like a flash, feed him up on it then get him on the real thing, there will be no stopping him then. Oh and

I think it would be best to put his weight back up mate (your bird I am not trying to tell you what to do pal) to 1lb6oz where you seemed to get a good response, then do maybe just 3 or 4 recalls for a big reward everytime finishing with perhaps a whole chick ect on the last one, don't worry too much about the distance, just get the response, then get him on the recall lure, and stepping/hopping off when he has finished his feed on it, I think if you give big rewards for his work you will see a marked change in him, remember mate he is not like a Harris, and that is when people get frustrated by

I thank you sir, once you get your head round the idea, (I know after flying a Harris walking round with a hawk on the glove appears boring) you will love it, you see Milo he wont be on the glove very much, he will be sat plucking fur or feather, best of luck pal you are about to discover why the term wizard of the woods, is such a fitting name for your giant sparrowhawk
  6. Absolute cracking cross mate, make good ferreting dogs, and good lamping dogs on the bunnies too, and that nice linty coat helps stop some injuries that the smooth coats tend to get, also have a think about a beddy cros greyhound also a brilliant cross and quite intelligent too, but if its a pure bunny dog to work with the terrier you will be hard pressed to beat a beddy whippet pal.
  7. Smother it in orange sauce, you never know it was there lol.
  8. Agreed, I used to work on the doors and they had a gay night once a month, packed with girls, and not many of them with shaved heads and dungarees, is it still true that men south of Watford gap have no testicles? Does anyone know?

No sweat dude, you are going to love him I promise you that and when he is going properly,he will bate at leaves blowing on the floor lol, if he misses a bunny, and goes up a tree, then fair enough, leave him if you think another may bolt, but I think if you start casting him up trees you will start to lose some glove control as he starts to self hunt, then you will drop his weight to try and regain a bit of control, IT WONT he will merely search further and harder because he is hungrier, you will get all the sport you want with him from the fist mate, especially when you are catching partridges
  10. Ok Ferretingman, assuming the op was in favour of this, how about we join forces split fuel and go and have a day with him? I am in Sheffield pal, over to you both gentlemen

Just stick to the fist dude, the first time I flew a gos at ferreted rabbits, I remember thinking that I doubt I would have got on them and killed them a lot quicker with the shotgun, he will get plenty fit enough chasing mate no need to bugger about with jump ups, although if you really want to muscle him up rope training is a surefire way to have a very fit muscular hawk, you are going to have bags of fun with him, just get Harris mentality out of your head pal, two distinct flying styles indeed, not that you cant fly a Harris from the glove of course, and my mate the gos man advocates only
  12. Nice one mate,we still don't get many round my way,but they will come that's for sure, good read that.
  13. Whats the matter with them? All the stupid adverts people put on here asking for permission, after a couple of posts you would have thought they would be breaking their necks to get out, if you were closer I would join you mate and likewise, good luck sure you will find a decent ferreter soon.
  14. HaHa, the red went straight away, it was a great shame it had the makings of a hell of a bird, but no way with my neighbours could I wait for it to quieten down, sure it will when its killing regular, well I have my eye on a female Harris she sounds a brilliant bird going to see her fly at the weekend and if I like what I see
  15. dog picked a rabbit up couple years ago that had a lump on its cheek, cut it open to find a almost clear liquid sack with as you say what looked like grains of rice worms of some type but cant remember the name, put me off eating it that's for sure cheers The rabbit had a tapeworm cyst mate, but the teal I have heard of that before cant for the life of me remember what it was though, wouldent eat it though.
  16. Done mate, I will test them first but I think they are going to be very good indeed and the beauty of them will be no dicking about swapping from daytime flying jesses to night time just leave them on and as they are woven with reflective materiel light up as soon as the light hits them but I will do a proper test on them to make sure people will be happy with them.

As Crow says I would be very reluctant to fly from trees, unless as you say you KNOW you can produce a slip for him, I have a mate who is a superb Gos man and he will not entertain flying from anything but the fist.
  18. Agreed, but all I would say is if you need to do it the bird wont suffer being in the carry box overnight, better that than a firework or wto.
  19. It certainly did not do it any favours that is for sure.
  20. To be honest mate any million candle power will do but just for sheer size I would go with something like a cluson shooterlite, you don't want to be lugging something with a head like a trombone on it, you have enough to carry with bird, headtorch, bag, battery ect ect, I will be making and selling some nice reflective paracord jesses soon as soon as it arries, taken me a while to source it but they should be the dogs doodars, and I will be selling them at a very reasonable price to forum members, if you want a pair pm me your number and I will let you know when they are done and tested, you w
  21. That is a problem with this type of forum. Just too many people posting bull sh!t. Nice fish, nice dog etc, when people are starting out they need the truth. How are they ever going to progress if they are not told the truth? In his case he is being ripped off as they are selling fish that quite frankly, are inedable, just to make a fast buck. What ever disipline of country sports you chose, it's a learning curve when you start off, you will progress a lot quicker when someone tells you the truth instead of the usual platitudes of nice fish etc. That is my take on it. TC I sor

Your doing well bud, as said don't worry a jot about the weight, you wont care once he starts nailing quarry, doing 100mph between the trees after pheasants
  24. I have a farm near me that is stuffed with them, I have not shot a hare for years (just a personal choice, I have no problem with anyone who shoots them) to me its a quarry for a hawk or a dog,and a worthy one at that, I would not have a problem with a closed season for them, and I am surprised there has never been one,I don't think the decline in numbers is altogether down to farming practice, I think it is just part of the ebb and flow of nature, for instance look at sparrows or starlings, you don't see the numbers anything like when I was a kid, we used to shoot them with the air rifles to
