Well got skye june 10th last year at six weeks old n we've had a few ups n downs but got her first kill last night been dipping her toe in now and again but she wasn't ready . The last few weeks though she's been settling down and getting more switched on so thought I would give her a try this week . With 2 near misses on tuesday before dark and a kill last night just before dark so its onwards and upwards for her now .

Good ferreting dogs r hard to come by a bet only a fraction of lurchers in this country r textbook at ferreting n they will most probs be the same type cross

Think u want to cut it down to about 3 seconds don't.think I've ever coursed a rabbit for 30 seconds either caught it or its down its hole by then saying that if I've caught rabbits in the first 5 or 6 yards if walked up don't think u can get that with a hare

Whippets certainly not natural born retrievers!!!
wharrier replied to bigbailey's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My old whip would retrieve balls n dummys as good as any lab bit slower at fetching a rab back but would bring it back was as good as a gundog on pigeons n other shot birds -
Nice little pup mate got one myself 9 months now. Quite sensitive mine like needs gentle handling has got a stubborn streak in her which this cross is noted for but a lovely natured dog atb with it were did u get the pup from by the way
-
Just get a good lurcher to lurcher cross out of tried n tested parents should be capable at all lurcher work atb with your search
-
When going out usually give mine something small at about 4 or 5 ish normally something light like a srambled egg with a small handfull of complete food

There not in decline quite the opposite really n that's the problem not enough homes for them a lot r having to give them away there probably the most common dog u see in the buy n sell papers getting passed on between the 1 n 2 year age bracket think a lot of the young chavs get this cross when they get into lamping then get sick n move onto something else sad really

Don't mind them showing the catching of the deer shows the way things should be proper reality none of this big bro shite but what leaves a bad taste for me. Is when the bloke starts chopping its head in half laughing n playing up to the cameras treat the animal with the respect it deserves dead or alive that's the way I was brought up n the way it should be I reckon n why use the cockrell as target practice just ring its neck what's all that about chasing it round the yard

Went through the same problem at that age stop retrieve training for a while kept trying the odd time see if she responded she's 8 months now and is back on track mind u left a few tennis balls in the field where she left them with her just wanting to piss fart about just left them n ignored her think she got the message as she now fetches plastic bottles n allsorts she picks up to me.don't let her get into bad habits is key

Nice looking dog [bANNED TEXT] is she first cross n what tts has she made got a first cross bitch here 8 months coming on ok
-
Try cochybonddu books got mine from there few quid more like 65 quid ordered it christmas eve got it yesterday
-
Everything should still be a game for it at that age sounds like your asking to much of the dog n its getting stressed not knowing what its meant to do properly stop pushing it I know its tempting but go back to square 1 like people have said n u might rescue the situation atb anyway

how to pick the best pup from a litter?
wharrier replied to royjel's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
In my case when I go for a pup the pup normally picks me just got to go with your gut instincts I suppose -
My last dog was a whippet crackin litte dog would face anything don't get why people think there weak or fragile mine could go all night n run the lurchers to a standstill but a guess its getting the right stuff like anything else I suppose but get the right one n condition it right be sound I know they have a short coat but mine never felt the cold while out either

first Cross Bedlington Whippet
wharrier replied to patterdalejoel's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Where did u get her from mate I've got a 7 month old first cross here she can be a bit headstrong but she's quite quick like n starting to use her nose now -
I think an allrounder is something that will do all u require don't think it has to catch. Every diffrent species of mammal r bird just say your a rabbiting man I'd say if it done ill u require for that job ferret lamp whatever else on rabbit u need think that's an allrounder for that person depends on what u need it to do
