  1. All farmers seem to suffer from this problem, mate . They see the same rabbit twice and think they've got two hundred ! Sometimes there's just no telling 'em It's just farmers for you ,I'm afraid, bloody frustrating tho, you try to be polite about it but sometimes in the end it's just a matter of ATB
  2. Your dead right, mate it may be a foriegn country but it's exactly the sort of shoit the anti's latch onto
  3. I've been longnetting for quite a few years now and I'd always used what is now called a 'trad set' net .It took a long time before I finally succumbed and bought a quick set basket, I glad I did because it's a great bit of kit..it's a Brian Brinded version but I'd like other peoples views on this set up and the others on the market
  4. Farmers are good at this.......see the same rabbit half a dozen times and think they've got hundreds ....been caught out like that no end of times . ATB
  5. My vet said four weeks and years ago it used to be sixteen weeks but I think eight weeks is a good minimum to work to ATB
  6. I think they're a good idea what ever your nets are made of, well done that man ATB
  7. I don't ferret all year round...spend too much time digging the ferrets out when they find a nest of youngsters plus having the crap stung out of me by stinging nettles don't rate very highly ,in my mind, as a field sport ATB
  8. If the RSPCA caught you doing this they would rip you up for shoit paper ATB
  9. I think you're right there mate it is likely to be EU legislation that brings ferreting to an end . The truth is the vast majority of legislation in this country is EU based . It's a great pity that the UKIP party turned out to be such a bunch of tossers I'm afraid that only leaves the way open for the BNP . ATB
  10. This might have appeared somewhere here before but....which book or DVD do you rate as best for a beginner to keeping and working ferrets ? Myself, I reckon The Complete Book of Ferrets by Val Porter and Nick Brown still takes some beating ATB
  11. All mine are rescues, always, some are biters some aren't but they all come round in the end, it's gentle handling that makes a good ferret...forget this crap about slapping them if they bite. The Jiff lemon juice idea is a good'un If I was a beginner again I'd get myself a book, they can't answer all the questions but they do help . ATB
  12. Snipped hob.....my jills are to valuable to risk thier health by leaving them in season ATB
  13. You just beat me to it TIGGER9 . Beg,borrow, steal or buy yourself a book mate you really don't want to get into breeding ferrets with no knowledge at all ATB
  14. I think the stuff you're talking about is jute, it looks very similar to hemp . If you're new to net making then it's good stuff to practise on because it's cheap so it don't matter too much when you things up But I don't think it's strong enough as a general net making material and I've used it in the garden for tieing plants up etc. and found it rots very quickly. I think waidmann has got it about right, "the better the twine the better the net" ATB
  15. Mine haven'tcome in yet mate, nothing to worry about, it'll happen when it's supposed to.........when you get to my age you'll realise there's nothing you can do to hurry a woman
  16. I'll be there both days, on the Cambs. Ferret Welfare stand......if you know my username I'll give you a 10% discount on 10z 3'6" purse nets ATB
  17. Yep, best of luck young man...I'll be there too ATB
  18. Nice sturdy box there mate, come in dead handy when you want somewhere dry to park your ar5e ATB
  19. The beauty of cable ties is that you can tighten them as much as you want ie fix the net to your pegs at the top so they don't move and at the bottom not quite so tight to give you a bit of movement for rough ground and they are as cheap as chips ATB
  20. Hi mate Have a look at The Countryman's Weekly, Bridport Nets, Brinded nets,The Netloft, Agouti Nets(recommended) websites . if you can't get any joy from that lot give up the idea and take up tiddleywinks ATB
  21. I met him just once and as The One said he was very good at what he did and ,naturally, a very nice bloke
  22. I wouldn't use tape .You can buy tiny electrical cable ties for tieing in bagging (net to running line) and bigger ones for fixing net and line to your pegs and they work really well been doing it for years . If your using traditional longnets it can help to tie in the bagging but as sam007 said it's down to personal preference ATB
  23. Tiercel is dead right FISHING nets are measured over the longest point ie 1 - 2 but RABBIT nets are measured over the shortest point ie 1 - 3or4 . This is just one of those peculiarities that exist in net making . However, if you were to ask Advanced Netting for 54mm mesh he would know exactly what you mean and that you are a rabbiter and he would sell you a 54mm mesh net but in FISHING parlance the same net would be sold as 108mm mesh . So you're both right ATB
  24. Sometimes the contact in the collar can get a bit dirty/corroded or the wires to the battery can break...all worth checking
