  1. YEAH,but you might end up with other complications..
  2. Try takeing her out during the off season into the fields and not hunt, just work on her manners, shes switched on to hunt mode once she gets into a field, you need to calm her down and start from there..best of luck with her bud..
  3. Glad you enjoyed it, forums like this, forge a bond of like minds which helps all the field sports people north south east and west..best of luck..
  4. Were you over here between those years,? which one were you then,, cant remember ya at all..
  5. My grand father used to have a dog like that, What he would do is turn down his Hearing Aid or take the batteries out, worked every time..
  6. coming from a bloke who freely admits one of his dogs is shite, you do it your way mate ill do it mine,no they dont only get road walked, they get all the free running they need, just not in areas infested with rabbits, and as for situations they come across, once im in the field surrounded by a hedge, they only need to know one thing, catch the bunny, So would you keep a dog away from the countryside?? were would you walk a dog that some thing might not make it run even the parks are full of squirrels do you implement keeping it on a lead till its ready to lamp. no lead in the fields, i
  7. The pup will get plenty of exercise in the countryside because thats where i live but just wont be coming across rabbits..
  8. Thanks for the reply bud ,i just dont see any gain in mooching him if hes only going to lamp,,
  9. Going to start a young dog next season on his own, he's done feck all yet, hasn't seen anything, recall is good, retrieve is bang on, basic manners are tip top, he will be used for the lamp, mostly, by the time he starts he will be in good shape physically i hope, he will have the ground work covered by then ,gates, wire, livestock etc,,My question is, Does he need to see a rabbit between now and the first rabbit he catch's next season..given that ,he's a lurcher and the rabbit is a small furry mammal which he will chase, The chase and strike are his department so cant help him there..dropper
  10. This topic has been done to bits now, lot of lads with a lot of experience starting pups young which surprised me,however every lurcher man has his own way of doing things, still dont see the advantage of entering them young in the long run ,and as far as animals in the wild and how young they start, well hunger is a great motivator, but how many make it to adulthood, 1 in 5 maybe, best of luck lads..
  11. When im lamping the dog is beside me , no lead. when its time for play ,he understands GO PLAY, play as you say ,is great for them, im 100% behind playing, but off the lead he got to listen to you ,no matter where you are..the dog knows not to go through a gate or gap before me ,he waits because hes calm..dogs running through fences into the next field without me ,has lead me into all sorts of trouble..good luck.
  12. Fine looking bitch that Fly, she looks good to go, good luck with them,,
  13. The age i start a pup, depends compeletly on the pup , but what i dont want in a pup is one that goes APE SHIT as soon as he gets into a field, and found that the pup developes hunt mode when entered too young, what i want is the same control in the field as i have at home, the pup must be calm , I dont slip a dog,he's always loose but doesnt stray, it works for me anyway..
  14. Pick the one you fancy and move the other one on , put all the work into her, by next season ,you'll have a really good bond made with you and the pup, to get 2 pups right is so difficult ,anyway best of luck with them bud..
  15. Flint ,just to clarify something, do you put the ability of your dog or dogs now ,down to the fact that they were started early, or is there something else involved,
  16. Some good points made here but what's the advantage of starting a pup so young , his head's all over the place at that age, he's not even cocking his leg to piss and that shows where his mind is at.. shit, if the only advise is to start them young ,this site would be full of world beaters..
  17. I think you've got to be in a position where you have experienced the beauty of the hare in the day, before you can make an informed decision, on this one, and for me its, no ..Trouble is, a lot of lads have to travel for hours for a night out, and it will be some lads only glimpses of hares in the future..what are ya going to do ,knock the lamp off...
  18. Hold on to your dog bud, some of those mutts just get under your skin,if you dont think this game is for you ,keep the dog..
  19. My old lurcher bitch used to howl in the shed ,trying to tell me that it was a good night for lamping, it would only happen on a moonless night with plenty of wind..any experiences similar to this, that told you that you were both signing off the same hymn sheet..
  20. Is there noone over here, that can judge a dog, or have they been all shipped to the UK to judge over there, because at the end of the day its only a bit of craic, their must be one honest irishman left on these shores..
  21. I tie them at the back of my brothers milk float, they get about 20 miles a day except sundays and holy days and christmas of course..
  22. The truth of it is, all pups will mature at different ages, smaller ones quicker then large breeds, Is not a competition ,If ya want to do something with the dog when he becomes 7,8,9,months old, train him..for younger lurcher owners, get a book and try to learn about how a dog learns, that way you have some understanding of the canine mind..
  23. Had an old bitch years ago that never took them any other way, but in cover, did it all her working life, wasn't very fast but learned to hit cover hard, a faster dog might take them easier but you'd still end up with the same number of rabbits at the end of the night, Good luck with him bud..
  24. You need to cheer up a bit in those pics , your ruining it for the dog..
  25. Why dont ya just use the bitch for hunting, if all ya want is a bit of fun..
