  1. No I like him on real rabbits- I shall leave the winching image with you- we had a good day out anyway.
  2. So does that mean keep him off rabbits but let him chase bits of sacking? I see your logic there but surely there must be a way to enjoy both? Am I complete dimmock that doesn't realise racing dogs don't get the real deal? Sorry if I am being a dimmock but really appreciate the advise...a friend has suggest that they just tie me to the winch and then he'd win everything ( this is possibly true but the female figure doesnt drag that well methinks)
  3. Racing was a disaster- they slipped him and he turned around and came back to me. No interest in the lure whatsover (but why would he want to chase a bit of sacking?) I was told to show him and the newbies we are won the smooth coated lurcher class. Really good to get out and talk to some real running dog folk in the flesh but sadly he had no reaction to the skins and dummies on sale. Shall continue our mooching and maybe have a look at some straight line racing where he can run to me. Love to take him out for a bunny run this evening as a reward but he's been awake more that 10 hours which i
  4. I think the dummy would be best to get him retreiving- any thoughts on racing?
  5. Maybe he had...silly bunny. My dog doesn't chase balls, sticks, toys or postmen. He ignores other gogs chasing things, the only thing he has ever shown a sign of chasing was the remains of his kill. I shall look out for a skin/toy thing at Game Fair this weekend that he shows a response to. Cheers all.
  6. yeah nettles were a suggestion, the serpents scared me off a little bit last time I posted but only as it became about me and not my dog. Heading to lowther this weekend to see what this racing malarkay is all about....Pip won't retrieve it seems but does enjoy a play with the remains of his quarry ( would have had some explaining to do if anyone caught me throwing and whooping as he chased after the back legs of one of his catches) It keeps a wag in his tail but I was somewaht off put to find a rabbit carcass strung up on a tree in our new found hunting ground....I'm not into this prize showi
  7. Sorry haven't been here for a while. My boy is coming along nicely but still keeps what he catches. Think I am too much of a worrier when it comes to injuries so I have two questions; Last week I let him out for a run on a sunny afternoon and he literally did this- spotted a bugs, leapt into a thicket, I could see his tail quivering thinking he had made a kill...he came out blinded. He was rolling his head onto the grass frantically until I called him back to me. Had to lift him over a fence and carry him back. No marks on him but eyeball retracted and eyelid shut as though he had no eyes. I b
  8. Well said Runforyorlife- A dog on a cat near a road is a recipe for disaster to either...
  9. I have always liked cats but then can emphasise with those that has a cheeky moggy coming on their house/messing on their garden. My boy seemed scared of them and after having had a swipe from one (for no good reason) at a mates house is now a bag of nerves everytime we are there....that said we went out for a quick scout for bunnies this evening and a black feral one ran from outside the warren he was obviously watching too. Managed to call the whip off as he clearly just saw a fluff running and gave chase- I don't want somebody's pet hurt and now, even more so, I don't want a torn ear/scratc
  10. Errm fox digger I'm packing in the pole dancing for a while and will probably be out with the whippet looking for a few last bunnies of the season....(rabbits not the playboy variety) Nothing around this evening- guess it was a clear still night and they saw us coming. Will defo have to sort out a lamp as the head torch ain't cutting it!
  11. LOL Foxdigger. Thanks guys, all advice duly noted!
  12. Thanks- esp Dogmagic there is some really good advice there. Just to clarify I am just chasing rabbits- the foxes were a case of mistaken identity.I honestly don't think he would chase one that crossed his path whilst out as he keeps clear of the ones by the stables even when they casually wander past. I was hoping to go out with a bloke in the area who lamps but he has been very ill recently.. so think that is for next season. Maybe he knows someone who can shoot those foxes as they will produce at least another four this year. The ferrets I will think about...met some the other da
  13. I am sure you are right- we do a lot of socialising with dogs- people he is better with. We have spent a lot of time learning ground but he has that whippet hard wire to run to anything. Maybe the Summer could be the making of him - I just want to see him happy and utilising the body he was blessed with....(I know that sounds a bit wrong) Good advice there- thanks x
  14. sorry, I know it is a long and involved post but thought I'd get some good advice here...nobody I know is involved in running dogs except to race em..
  15. Hello again everyone. I have some questions ( I know some of you will think they are very stupid but thats the title of the post!) I have been taking my whippet out as previously discussed in the local area. Havent got myself sorted out with a lamp etc yet as not too sure how much I can devote myself to this and whether this is the best way to get my dog working and enjoying himself. I so far feel that we would both be better off working with ferrets but that is another animal to keep and as I don't do things by halves it would be a big commitment as I also am "horsey" When we are out, I t
