  1. Dogs can deal with most things in a driven mindset , it's the state of mind where everything's in the dogs world feels good, It's how gun and protection dogs assimilate the negetive of loud noise into a positive , it's not a situation of dogs just getting use to it Create the right state of mind and introduce the negetive , the negetive can become part of the feeling of flow
  2. In any litter to any bitch your going to have a spectrum of temperaments , this is how animals evolve, if a litter is born in the wild certain temperaments will excell and it doesnt have to be the higher tempered pups shy more withdrawn types can thrive if an environment is heavily predated , I seen very few litter where all temperaments are particularly similar and a sure sign of this is pups which fight constantly without provocation So even in police work you might get one in a litter that makes the mark from two driven animals in the same as before when you breed for high driven yo
  3. Not sure what deals will be on offer, can't see the EU offering incentives to leave , mana from heaven will not be striking the common man , the U.K. is deeply divided with all sorts of permutations for what's happened , when immigrants can't be blamed any more for the woes of th land what will be next in the firing line , interesting few years ahead
  4. Did ya ever watch the gene le bell fight , couldnt take it seriously but enjoyed it Great old footage
  5. Feck the food bowl away first of all , all his food is earned , downing sitting , heeling , when he brings any item anywhere near you tell him YES and feed a bit, feed him for coming into your space Don't worry about commands for any action, he will probably be suspicious of vocal commands if he's ignoring them, get the action first, if you lure him into a down give the command only while he's doing to action, that goes for all behaviour , your not commanding him to do an action , what you want is for him to Believe his actions makes the sound which gets him a reward , Stick out your ha
  6. I see the point your making and agree about the terrier or saluki being bred to kill more so than interact but as for a well bred pit bull, I believe a dog that has good interaction skills with his conditioner or handler would be a much easier dog to work with to get in shape and even respond to his handler in the heat of battle under very strenuous conditions. through selective breeding I believe good interaction skills are fairly common in the breed. In my very limited experience with these fine animals I've found the few I was around to be very trainable. Also as a breed they seem to be a
  7. Well what you can say is there are varies types of breeds in the lurcher world which are bred to take instruction , collies , gun dog breeds etc On the other hand bull breeds , terrier bred , saluki which are all bred to kill on their own , they weren't bred to interact in their line of work I would opt for something along the lines of collie lurcher , in saying all that a gobshite can make a mess of any dog however it's bred
  8. On what do you judge the quality of the bond on bud ?
  9. Kings right when he mentions the different ways of communicating with dog in the field but getting the pup to keep an eye on ya is handy too as he'll keep a little closer I don't introduce a pup to much at that age , I keep him focused on me and from me hunting is just an add on , you dont need to teach dog to hunt but what you do need to built is trust as already mentioned by King , if I take him out , I'll feed him out , all his food not titbits , hand feed getting plenty of contact, try managing the pup so he can't get himself in situations where you have to bollik him keep him focused
  10. Birch them two fuckers in the middle of town on a Saturday afternoon with a big crowd to witness with their pants round their ankles , physical pain goes away , public humiliation don't
  11. Liked the look of that dog a lot, his temperment showed in every picture , fine looking animal and a good honest worker by the sound of it , He's was a lucky lad to have had you let him express himself to the full and you in turn enjoyed his ability , what more can you ask from a working relationship, enjoy the memories bud ,
  12. When the dog knows his job and knows your instrumental to it , you find you don't need to correct him or coerce him into doing things , where a look or a word influences him , you'll know , it will just dawn on you one day Having said that it will also depend on how he's treated
  13. I always felt that the dog will show you when there is s connection, maybe you'll find he's seconding you or when the dog seems to understand what it's all about and makes himself social to fit with what your doing , if ya get my drift
  14. Maybe the organ needs a new tune ?
  15. Based on the fact he's a working class jackeen, , he may have a big mouth but he's a cute hore in the same breath with a small circle of friends , tight family unit and a mot with a good head on her shoulders, he has made making money look easy, created mega interest in himself and his fights , he had a sharp crisp mind, don't underestimate him , he may play the joker but he's nobody's fool He's nate diaz's fool Your hung up on him mate , it's about money , losing is part of the game all working for the same company, some get rich and some go by the way side, it's a business , he's landed

  17. He was at that fight last week where the young Portuguese lad died, SBG lad Ward a team mate of McGregor fought him, MMA came in for a lot of flack this week here Get in get rich get out , can't see him doing it this way though
  18. Your right what you say about the shivers I see it more like a car having its engine turned on, it then has energy under the hood but before its engaged into drive and it's just idling , the vibration is noticeable in whippets because the body mass is less that most dogs , it's an energy issue not a temperature one .
  19. Nothing wrong with getting plenty of contact , the more the better , more contact equals less fear and builds trust , ideal for recall and retrieve too Conifident mutt has no problem with contact, nervous dog is the opposite , always a good tell in investigating where the relationship between owner and dog is really at , dogs body language can't tell lies
  20. No dog is trained at 6 months old bud no matter how he reacts at home or anywhere else, early training can lead to the owner believing the pup is willing trying it on in situations like that , the fact of the matter is the pup finds the dead bunnies more interesting than anything you have to offer , Nothing is broken here that can't be fixed, at six months old the pup is getting into drive territory, more interest in smells , and expressing greater prey instinct Look at this as a way to find out what attracts the pup a ball , tug item , food Only feed the pup on walks, bin the bo
  21. Very informative post penny I do engage with pups as the grow but my major interest is building conifidence I don't put them in situations they can't emotionally deal with its all positive interaction , I encourage behavior which creates impulse control , that is to say a pup can be lured into the down and fed there , no commands or corrections , what I'm trying to instill is the less I do the more I get , The best form of control I feel is where the dog feels he controls its owner, he grounds himself and calms himself to get what he wants, all his early months is based around him being co
  22. Lab makes a good point on this thread which is very often overlooked , that letting the pup lie up for a good stretch of its first year , old timers use to do it and I for one couldn't see the point , it seemed like valuable training time wasted , Well the reason for it is simple , a pups first year is broken up into two different mindsets , the first is a period of time where it is seperating the positive from the negetive , what makes me feel good and what makes me feel bad So within the first period if the owner offers too much resistance through corrections and discipline seemly
  23. This thread opens up an interesting insight into how folks think dog digest information On one side we have the positive reinforcement model, where if you do as I ask I'll give you a treat , how it works in theory is , a treat which is worth say 50 feel good points is given when the mutt performs a behaviour, fine we all get that , Where it falls down is that the rabbit ,bird , smell , fox shite , is worth 200 feel good points to the dog and if you have nothing on your person or have no history of engaging the mutt while highly excited to that level , he quickly does the maths and
  24. You make a good point there but an advantage the collar has over hands on correction is the the dog doesn't lay blame for the correction at the hands of the trainer , you won't have the fear in the dog of the approach of the handler or indeed its approaching into the handlers space
  25. Another thing that's I feel is happening in the dog world especially at top competive level is trainers are breeding highly driven dogs many of which are trained in part through ecollars I don't have a huge problem with that as such but when joe soap buys a pup out of trail winning dogs trained with the use of collars , many of the pups can prove to be a real handful seemly more driven and less social in interacting with the average handler A lot of folk look for top level pups and rightly so but many of these pups can prove to be almost terrier like in their working intensity with the
