  1. For some reason it wont let me post the photos, so had to use links. Because different body language is shown. for fear They may show avoidance, licking of lips, low body, no eye contact, turning head away. my bitch when i brought her home ( she is a rescue dog), deemed a dangerous dog and if the law had of changed before then she would have been pts as she did bite without warning and did bite a further two more times just weeks after bringing her home, due to not her fault, but people not listening to what they were told. https://get.google.com/albumarchive/111192008996311547239
  2. Drive is a force of attraction an emotional state to make contact , be it a shot duck floating on a frozen lake , a hare taking off into the distance , a dog trembling outside a hole waiting for a bolt , each breed has it own niche for expressing prey making but they are not set in stone and very interchangeable , two Bulldogs in the pit are also expressing a drive to make contact or does their behavior fall outside the spectrum of driven behavior some will see dominance , bull type dogs are seen as dominant because their temperment is higher and right there for all to see When 2 Bulldogs
  3. A sneaky dominant dog's a dominant dog that's also sneaky,he might wait until he's alone with a weaker person before showing any dominance. Dogs will obviously fight for lot's of different reasons. No offence but I've got no interest in challenging the definitions of principles used by much smarter and clued up people than you or I,so I'll leave it there. Why don't you consider yourself clued up as far as I can see if you have a dog your opinion is as valid as the so called experts , we just don't question the experts enough bud
  4. Do two fighting dogs fight because of domanance , drive or something else Is there any relationship between drive/ dominance/ temperment We will end up going round in circles because we haven't challenged any of these definitions Bulldogs fight / long dog runs / terrier bays /collie herds are they just all an interpretation of the same drive to make contact , the problem is people only see fighting as fighting and nothing else ?? Is sneaky dominance a new one , ?
  5. Take the terrier growling out from under the sofa , he only feel safe under the sofa to express the fear he carrys around every day We don't see fear we only see aggression
  6. That's an issue in itself because no has a definite answer , it's open to interpretation depending on who you talk too but generally by then it's another dog for the chop If they can't understand a behavior don't take a risk , an a lot of it is because they don't understand how a dog processes information
  7. Different types of dogs have very different mindsets, some dogs are dominant towards people,I've seen it in under exercised pets and well worked dogs of different breeds. Obviously if the dogs had it's prey drive satisfied,is well exercised and well fed it's less likely to crop up,but it's still there in some dogs. That's the problem Neens no one can definitely say anything , either there is a theory that works or there isn't , some dogs maybe , some days, so no one really understands and large groups of dogs get banned The problem also is we see dominance in every act of aggression
  8. How complex are dogs , what's the bottom line , what's the nature of dogs bud A lot of these cults Just see what they want to see and when something crops up they don't understand they make shit up , Some of the positive crew don't even believe in the Drive concept but they give advice to pet dog owners who have not idea of working dogs, and how harmony can come about through working together if they don't understand drive how can you understand dogs , Or you tell me what drive is ? im interested to know how complicated dogs are , I've walked driven dogs past bitches in heat
  9. I'm not with ya bud, why in gods name would a dog just leg off for no reason and why wouldn't he come back, I'd jack it all in if I couldnt get a dog to come back without calling , an odd time a dog might twig the rabbit is just lurking in hedge after a chase but ya know by your dog what he's doing
  10. Excellent post ,and I know it's true as I have a dog here that I've made all those mistakes with, which is easy to do with a pup you bred ,in a family home. He's also a picky eater, all in all a c* *t of a dog really Likewise , been there never again, I don't care how much the rest of them in the house try to break me no pup is ever playing/ f***ing about in the home again Seen to many pups get into trouble for biting , mouthing ,ripping etc then it's howling, never again, end up with an anti Christ on your hands
  11. The best advice I ever got from a top class trainer was long line raised dog is far more attentive because he never know the limits or lenght of the line so he always feel you have control even when he just dragging it behind him or its shortened up , first class tool for training bud
  12. People get hung up on recall as if it's some sort of barometer of how good the relationship is It can make or break a relationship because owners will just read defiance into it If you have made yourself interesting to the dog you don't to be constantly calling the f***ing dog your not going to be able to call it off the scent of a rabbit anyway but an interested pup shouldn't be far from your side anyway The trick is to make the pup believe that been by your side makes a rabbit appear, I only ever start s pup on the lamp I have controlled everything in the pups life up to the p
  13. If the pup is highly stimulated in the house, fussing , playing and generally paying it loads of attention that then becomes a metric of how it should feel When it's not getting heaps of attention it feels somethings missing / wrong hence howling Inside rest outside play, dogs makes associations with environments Like a dog reliving the experience of chasing a rabbit in a certain field, it goes right back into that same frame of mind same as the first time on retuning to the spot Crate, ignore and only let out when quiet , it far easier to crate from the start but the pup is still
  14. Would the multi million dollar dog training industry even exist if people worked their dogs , never seen an industry with so many snake oil salesmen in it because folks can't pin point the truth , they think they have it figured out until the dog does something they can't understand or it flips out , they then start making up stuff , projecting thoughts or saying the dog is crazy Life for a dog is not like a box of choclates, it's more like a can of coke, stimulate it enough without release and your going to get a massive build up of energy , if you could let the energy out regula
  15. So on that note all working dogs should be tested early to see if their worth keepin , And if your disappointed with a pups effort of wanting it ?? Where do ya go from there
  16. Who calls it rank drive ? What your explaining are dogs without function , I'm talking about working dogs who have fully expression of canine behavior with complete prey identification , well worked Bulldogs/ strong dogs when allowed to express to their type are like pussycats around kids The worst type of dog is a fearful driven breed with no outlet for energy , a lot of them are a ticking f***ing time bomb The problem is the information out there today , a lot of people are told to subdue / lay down the law to high tempered breeds and all their doing is putting a charge in the dog a
  17. I have decided to go some where down the middle. I packed in treats and now he just gets a good boy and a pat on the head on the other hand I never throw my weight about with him or clout him. I try to be just firm and fair and clear and keep cool. I some times fail on that bit but not often. Simple little things like jumping in the boot. He was good at it and I used to lob a treat in and up he went. But then some times he would cast his nose over the boot to see what I had put in and if it was worth the effort jumping in and if not sit on his butt. So now I trained him to hop on a box on com
  18. Neither side have it right , the positive or dominance mob unless you address the fact the prey making / prey instinct is the facility through which dogs bond and make themselves social to fit in their pack be it a household or group of dogs Once a dogs prey instinct is activated and he understands what he's all about and what prey is , he don't need to be dominated or put in place because he tunes into other members of his pack us included and makes HIMSELF fall into line , essentially he wants what we want Going through doors and eating before dogs all that bullshit is completely i
  19. That's a very good point joe , how you're with the dog the other 23 hours a day have huge revelance on such things as retrieve , if your constantly correcting him for been a c**t round the house it's gonna show in his resistance to you
  20. Hope your not making a cross for your own back there mate, keeping two soon to be juvenile dogs chilled in your gaff will take some doing especially if their brought up to believe the house is a play area , Outside play inside rest/ crate or some other way to restore order, in a couple of weeks bold pups will start regarding cushions and soft fabric as much more prey like than bones and chews Best of luck
  21. Sexually in dogs piggybacks on their prey making instincts, pups playing in the crib will mount each other when playng action stops Dogs have a sensual hunger for the shape of objects oral/sexual , the dog as an animal is attracted to everything , it will find some way to satisfy its hunger , roll in ,taste , smell , chase hump , it's all encompassed within prey making Plenty of examples of male protection dogs very sexually excited by the form of the helper aggravating the dog , German dog handlers were way ahead of the curve in understanding this , to understand prey instinct think
  22. Just.reading your post on tug training Penny , theres a lot of rules and must do's which are completely unnessary The main premise behind the activity with the dog is Not about the item , the item is just an extension of you, I let all the mutts here mouth my hands arms at times , they feel safe with me and trust is 100%, Play tug ,go through all the motions , encourage him , rub him wrestle him and let him win , you need to have him on a long line for this , let him win and back up encourage him to come in and push the item into you , get him jumping up on you with it , the more connecti
  23. Dogs can deal with most things in a driven mindset , it's the state of mind where everything's in the dogs world feels good, It's how gun and protection dogs assimilate the negetive of loud noise into a positive , it's not a situation of dogs just getting use to it Create the right state of mind and introduce the negetive , the negetive can become part of the feeling of flow
  24. In any litter to any bitch your going to have a spectrum of temperaments , this is how animals evolve, if a litter is born in the wild certain temperaments will excell and it doesnt have to be the higher tempered pups shy more withdrawn types can thrive if an environment is heavily predated , I seen very few litter where all temperaments are particularly similar and a sure sign of this is pups which fight constantly without provocation So even in police work you might get one in a litter that makes the mark from two driven animals in the same as before when you breed for high driven yo
