  1. What I was going to say. The Americans have been much slower to adopt metric measurements. They still define their calibres in Imperial. One of their Mars landers went in without braking because someone had calibrated the altimeter in feet rather than meters. Ouch. Ric It was in fact a European lander, Beagle II, and the reason for the splat moment was that it was calibrated in MM, not a sensible measurement, if metric was better for reloading then people would be using it, as it is i know people in Europe who reload and even they don't use Grams as a viable measurement for handling po

  3. I guess your next question will be 'Has anyone used a .410 in the house to kill spiders' lol! no, but a work mate did use his 9mm garden one to shoot a spider, said it peppered the wall a bit Hyperion put a post in General Talk about using a BB gun on a FYT spider.

  5. In as far as scopes are concerned I cannot comment. BUT I have done a lot of serious photography and believe you me Nikon glass is as good as any in the world. If you like the spec of the sight go for it. Ric
  6. VERY close range...15 yards tops, but from memory 15 feet is more realistic, not used any for years! Not to be recommended in your best match rifle and a good scrub afterward is best plan! Only one guy I know who uses them a bit these days and he has a dedicated shotshell rimmy! I understand they are popular in the States for snake shooting?? WARNING DO NOT USE WITH A SOUND MODERATOR ATTACHED! Dunno about the States but in the Caribbean Islands that have snakes they use snake pistols. They are old revolvers wirh knackered rifling. Take a standard round, yank the bullet, fill
  7. Funny thing is, the police got it right. Crimes involving licensed guns are very rare, and usually involve shooting over land without permission or quarry for which the shooter is not cleared. This trashy rag is trying to make out that people go through all the hassle of getting a FAC to commit bank robberies. I don't think many FEOs would pass that! Why don't you put this post up on "Rimfire, Centrefire and Shotguns? Ric

  10. Alternative History suggests that if Harold had taken on the French Army of William first, as he could easily have done, he would have beaten them and then gone on to beat the Viking army. In any case, the Vikings had more claim to the Kingship of England than the French invaders. Sadly, the Frogs won. Famous last words: Harold said to his men "keep an eye on those French archers." Whoops.

  13. Made a great song tho'. Simon Smith and his amazing dancing bear. Alan Price around 1966. Whoops, giving me age away. Again. RicW
  14. I met a guy a few years ago who used a Weatherby .378 Magnum on Red and Sika. He reserved his .460 for African and American trips. He let me fire his .460 on a range. Terrifying. Blew me 10 feet backwards and I was lying down at the time. Ric
  15. Johnson's Shout. Sketchley's. I can't believe that people are saying use wax on cotton fabrics.
  16. And how many cases have their been of .223's blowing up due to someone using 5.56mm ammo in it? Also, why does the CiP use identical specifications for both cartridges? CiP specs for both are higher than SAAMI specs 62,000 PSI as against 55,000 PSI. Why do people think that every gun maker who makes .223 rifles make them with fast twists? It's primarily because people want to shoot current 5.56mm ammo in which needs it to stabilise the bullet. Manufacturers know damn well that people buy them for this purpose. Do you fancy being the first? I don't.
  17. I just googled Weil's Disease. Yeuch! And Ee-ur-gh! Mostly mild but if you get a bad dose you won't die but you'll wish you could! Orrible way to go.
  18. History lesson coming up, and remember that those who will not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. At the start of the Vietnam War the US forces were all armed with M1 rifles in 7.62 x 51 NATO. The US Air Force were using Vietnamese soldiers as air base guards, and these were little guys who had problems coping with the recoil. At the same time, the US Army were finding the M1 a clumsy lump in jungle conditions. (Ask Deker about stalking with a big long barrelled gun.) The US Government set up a program with Remington to develop a lighter round which could be fired from a small

  20. How does that work then. If the dog ate the rat would he not be in contact with urine and saliva? Sorry, I didn't make clear that the danger arises when the saliva gets into the dog's bloodstream from the bite. The risk from swimming in infected water is that the rats pee in the water and if the dog - or human being! - has an open cut, even just a scratch, the germs can get into the bloodstream from the water. You could drink the water safely if you fancy a rat pee cocktail . . . Ric
  21. Neither whisky nor whiskey mature in the bottle. The ageing takes place in the cask, so a 10 year old whisky has matured in the cask for 10 years. Once it's in the bottle it makes no odds how old the bottle is. And yes, the older the better. If you're feeling flush buy yourself an 18 year old Macallan. Remember that putting anything but water in a single malt is a capital offence for which you can be hung drawn and quartered. Well , you will be if I get hold of you! Ric
  22. A lot of things are 'available' in France. The dealers don't care who they sell what to. A friend of mine moved over there 3 years ago and has been offered allsorts. 22rf, .410 with Brenneke slugs, centrefire rifles. No subsonic rf though and no sound moderators. He's had to make use of an 'air rifle' mod. Must be a different part to where you went, because he says there is just nothing on the ground except a few Coypu. Every Sunday morning, the woods are full of guns shooting anything that moves, no matter who owns the land. No bird song, no rabbits, nothing! Bloody French eat songbir
  23. Correct. In my home town the canal towpath is a popular walk. As I recollect, two dogs have died of Weill's after swimming in the cut. Every year the local paper carries a warning that swimming in the canal is dangerous because of Weill's. A young lad wound up in intensive care after going for a swim. Some people are missing the point here. Dougie realises that it doesn't matter if the dog bites the rat, the risk is if the rat bites the dog. The infective agent is carried in the rat's saliva and urine, not in in its gut. Your dog can eat all the rats it likes, but if the rat bites back th
  24. 1.) SAAMI are required by US law to update their figures every 5 years 2.) 5.56 mil spec ammo is indeed not the same as it was 30 years ago. It's a bloody sight more powerful. If you are dumb enough to use mil.surp 5.56 in your .223, go ahead, feel free. When you get your stupid head blown off, that is just EVOLUTION IN ACTION. Why are we arguing anyway? The savings are negligible and the risk is winding up dead to save a few pence. No brainer. Ric
  25. From what you have said, it seems that your ex's mother has residential care of your daughter, presumably because your daughter is living at her mother's gaff. As said, you still have rights of access but you will have to negotiate with the old bitch not the young one. (Not very Christmassy Ric...). Perhaps your solicitor could write to the grandmother? A few days away is no problem but you need to make damn sure she comes back. My sympathy to you today. After my marriage broke up my first Christmas without watching my little lass opening her prezzies under the tree, was pretty hellish. C
