  1. Does she chew on dummies too? If she does you'll have to go right back to the beginning of retrieving, working in a narrow area with a wall at one end. Stand a few paces back from the wall and throw the dummy towards it. That way the dog has to pick it up and come back to you. Encourage her back with lots of jumping around or walking backwards whilst praising her for coming to you. Increase the fuse gradually but always train in the passageway until she's conditioned to not chew and bring the dummy straight back. Then work up to frozen game in a stocking, then by itself, then cold game, then f
  2. I know there's a few older threads on here and they mention nfu mutual as a possibility for working dogs. You could also try the farmers places as they always cover dogs that work. Good luck Ruthi
  3. Ooh I'm getting out there at the weekend then thanks for all your help, will let you know what I find! Atb Ruth
  4. Apparently onion soup's amazing for beating winter colds, have to give it a go as the kids at work are bringing in all sorts. cheers bert! atb Ruth
  5. Yes, the sloes round us are still blue but not touched by many looking forward to that one. I usually put a few drops of almond essence in as well as the sugar, takes the edge off. Gorgeous with blue cheeses and nettle crackers mmm mouth watering. Still haven't had the first frost here yet though so giving it a bit longer before picking. How about leaves and salady things this time of year, any left or will they all have died off? Got a challenge to create a free meal in late October with access to trout and salmon, rabbit, venison, but not much to put with them, think I'll have my work cu
  6. Thanks, never thought of using rhubarb in chutney! Will try it this weekend and post the results atb ruthi

  10. Ah didn't know that. He said wolf but then again did get him from a rescue as a 12 week old pup... Why choose deerhound over wolfhound then? Thanks to everyone for their answers, lots to think about now atb, ruthi
  11. Do you know where might be stocking the DVD, or is it best to get in touch with George? Look forward to it. Atb ruthi
  12. I know there's been an earlier thread (on here I'm fairly sure? Am writing this on phone so can't check it!) about converting a shed into a kennel, adding insulation, divisions etc, then building a run onto it using reasonably priced galvanised panels. Sounds interesting and possibly more economical as long as it's insulated...? Sometimes panels pop up in the for sale section on here too. Atb with it mate, Ruth.
  13. Never thought about Youtube, thanks! It'll let me see more what goes on plus a keeper friend's going to take me lamping. Beddy cross sounds good, will look into them more. Thanks for everyone's help atb Ruth.
  14. Thanks What crosses are best for rabbiting or ratting? Atb Ruth.
  15. I've always been a Labrador girl, using them for beating and occasionally picking up, but am now living next door to a 14 year old! non working lurcher (3/4 greyhound, 1/4 Irish wolfhound) and have fallen in love. I've never seen a lurcher work, anyone up for showing me one eve? could be a new interest, this I'm in York but close to North York Moors etc. I'm also interested in how different crosses form the character of the dog and what work he'll be best at. Atb Ruth.
