first two lambs off to slaughter
Born Hunter replied to chimp's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Awsum! Has it been worth it chimp? How do the finances of the whole thing work out? -
Do many people whos dogs are at reasonable off season fitness anyway get their dogs fit through ever increasing amounts of work? I think it helps to have access to lots of decent lamping ground if this is the method of choice. Not that I do this, just a question?

Allways makes me laugh listening to people go on about the country wasting millions in foreign aid. Theres a bigger picture in politics that many dont see...

Calling somebody such things falsely is as low as those on such registers. Call him a twat, wanker or whatever you like but resorting to that just aint right. In alot of

Piss in the ocean! Personally im quite happy to support a royal family. But then I dont bitch and whine about somebody having it better than me. Not that I belive the royal family have it better than me, but most seem to think they do.

Thinking back to my years at secondary school physical education/sports was a low priority. Football, cricket, tennis and some athletics was about it. Couple hours a week max! I went through the whole of my education having never thrown a javeline/shotput/discus, never played any contact sport, never so much as even taught about any combat sport (god forbid!). I f*****g hated cricket, enjoyed football and still do but was found lacking at any sort of serious level and tennis was only really for smashing the ball into your oponant . The sports that really interested me was track and field eve

Your right moll, I seem to recall there being just over 100 different strains and the jab only covering 7 of them as you say. It begs the question, why bother at all?

Do you honestly believe that a terrier does its job because it gets a rag at the end? Ragging means f**k all to them compared to their hours sparing under the ground! If you pulled a terrier out of a hole, showed it a dead fox, do you think that terrier would rag the fox knowing its true oponent is still alive and in the earth? Ragging a dead carcass isnt payment to them, working live quarry is payment.

GREED! Thats all it is! Take a look at DWs post £££££££££££££££££££££££££ ? I didnt realise running a shoot was so profitable, all keepers are millionaires right? Your acting very snobbish! We live in a world where in nature there are Pedators and Prey, From the plains of Africa and the mountains of Canada to your very own back garden there are creatures eating other creatures, even in the house that you live in. Im not as daft as I look, lol. Of course there is a food chain, even in our tame 'civilised' country. I would hate to think keepers/farmers want to eliminate o

My post certainly wasn't aimed at you BH . and I 100% agree they do and will take Gamebirds mate. they put down a average of 15,000 Pheasants on this estate and a few thousand Partridge, there are Buzzards everywhere as I'm sure Millet can back me up on, I see them regular ringing round and round and never seen one yet take a Gamebird although I'm sure some poults get taken now and again. there's a large meadow on the Esatate which you can only descibe as Watership down, its bunny city! this is the area where the Buzzards are most concentrated, there's a fair few bunny's with Mixy whi

I agree with you jasper, on some shoots they cause very little damage and what they do is perfectly acceptable. However on others its a different story...

Firstly I don't have a problem with game shoots. Just some of the individuals that bring shooting and the keepering profession into disrepute by their actions. Point is that the raptors take advantage of the artificially high population of prey items presented to them The same can be said of any other shoot pest, foxes, crows etc., that have been introduced or managed for mans pleasure and profit. It is man that has caused the 'problem' not the birds themselves. Again, the same can be said of all pests in game shooting and farming, so we leave them be as its not their fault, yes?In relation s

Edited: Cant be arsed to start an argument.

So its just game shoots you have a problem with and therefore the ethics of controlling pests for the purposes of protecting game birds? Im just trying to get to the root of your argument. I've read the 'non native' argument a few times here, does that mean it is 'ok' to run a game shoot that only shoots grey partridge and hares and hence shoot spars and buzzards to stop over predation? Or is running a commercial shoot unethical no matter the quarry? Those of you that are anti bop population management, can I ask if you control any native pest species on your permissions to support you
-
At the risk of getting involved in this argument, do you agree with pest control at all? Or is it just the control of pests on game shoots you have a problem with. From where im standing, if a species population grows to a size where the damage it is causing becomes too much of a financial burden then it is a pest and culling becomes an option. Foxes, stoats, mink, magpies, crows are all pests on game shoots and farms depending on what the farm produces. My point of view is the only question to ask is "is the buzzard population locally at a level where they are in pest numbers?" if so surely a

Do you think a dog would stand a better chance on a rabbit with 100 yards head start?

How many of them knew they were facing impossible odds to survive alone (I believe facing it with others changes human mentality) and had the choice to walk away? Fighting when you have no choice is different. Very complex issue, and to an extent very subjective. Your second paragraph sums it all up for me, alot of sense! Im waffling now....
-
Good post moll, I agree but I think it gets more complex than that. For instance a fighter will try to fight their way through the situation as it is just their nature, but surely they have an 'override' where they will walk away if the odds against them are just too great? Or will they as ideation suggests not make that saccrifice and in a near impossible situation fight to their certain death? This is way off topic now and not at all relavent to this poor family as the mother couldnt do a thing but its provoked a bit of thought. Personally I think even lifes 'fighters' will have an overr
-
Your probably right. Obviously depends on the circumstances. Like I said, I dont think any of us really know what we would do when faced with near certain death. Instincts take over. What those instincts dictate we do is perhaps another discussion for another day. I was just trying to rationalise/justify the mothers actions so she didnt seem as some careless/selfish person. Taking on mollys points and having read it again it sounds as though she wasnt even in the same room as her son, so short of running through a blazing house to her death she could do nothing. Bloody tragic whatever the circ

RIP Survival instinct I guess. Nature often sacrifices young if the parent cannot save them. Just because we are 'intelligent' beings doesnt mean we still dont obey those same instincts when put in life and death situations. Non of us can say 100% what we would do in such circumstances untill we were in them. I would have thrown the kid, but then perhaps she tried and wasnt strong enough?

Personally the very few dogs ive known with border in have had very good temperaments and good noses with a generally chilled out attitude when not hunting. I bet you will have a great time with it and wonder why you never had a terrier before!
