A different media outlook
Born Hunter replied to moddey-dhoo's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Ive always strugled to see the point in trials for terriers. Strongdogs I can understand but I dont see how that type of trial proves much of anything of the earthdogs worth. Perhaps its my inexperience with such things. Surely to test a digging dog with some sort of formal test a number of well managed, well looked after earths/setts would be far more appropriate and then the dog judged on how it has performed at its true job. Flying through some man made tunnels and smashing whatever is at the end for a few minutes doesnt really replicate the conditions or test the attributes of a good diggi -
Vet says dont give bones
Born Hunter replied to wuyang's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Just how pups should be reared! -
Over the past few weeks while doing a few jobs around the shoot and vermin days I've noticed a few pairs of greylags knocking about the duck ponds (never had geese before). Well today on one particular pond there was about 8 greys and 2 canadas. All good during the season making a nice addition to the bag. However, we put about duck on this particular pond and I was wondering what problems geese might cause? Will they bully the ducks for food? I would imagine this number of geese could put feed costs for this pond right up! If they nest are they gonna give our released ducks agro? Any particu

Don't be silly petal, just having wild thoughts. Darcy, there are many loop holes like I have said earlier, If your friend owns the land, then we have trespass with intent. It's a big old rule book, and it can send you round the twist , BUT there will always be a Charge for an offence. Leave that to the CPS. artic, the question i asked was whether the earlier statement about owning the pheasant because it is on your land is incorrect or not? Law has always held a particular interest to me, I could debate about it til the cows come home. I guess that you are agreeing

That goes for the majority of driven shooters in my experience!

DO RABBITS CONTAIN MUCH PROTEIN
Born Hunter replied to paddy o neil's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Rabbits are around 19% protein. Are you sure, I thought they were 30%+ protein. One of the highest % protein meats available. Edited to add; Apologies, you are correct, raw rabbit is 20%+ protein, cooked rabit is 30%+ protein. -
No hierachy as such, but ive got a top and bottom; Top; modest sort of dogman that works his dogs hard and to as many different discipplines as he can and above all is HONEST with himself about his dogs abilitys. Maybe a rabbit man, maybe a daytime hare man, a foxer or just a out and out lamper. Bottom; gate smashing, crop driving subaru poachers that give everybody a bad name! I have my preferences as to what I like but I dont believe any discipline is better than any other.

Was a hard dog the best type for working otter then? Or just what you worked at the time? From previous bits I've read on working otters with terriers I got the impression a good otter was quite a match for a terrier, really being able to deal out some grief but at the same time quick like a fox (not that a fox cant deal out serious punishment) and also readily bolting???? Anyway, the days of being able to legally work the 3 main quarry (fox, badger and otter) with a terrier must have been incredible. I wonder if any of our american friends work otter? Not sure of the laws over there b

Im sure FTB didnt mean any offense by this thread! Shooters are going to find any news involving shooting of interest as it directly affects them. It doesnt mean they dont feel empathy for the family invovled or the victims! If it was an accident, then there are clearly safety concerns, if it was intentional then there are legal concerns that WILL affect the rest of us shooters. This event is of interest to shooters like myself however that doesnt take anything away from the imense loss of this sad event.

If youve got a big enough gob to come on here bragging about that breed of dog and you do actually have the work for it, your gonna get locked up and the last thing that dog will feel is its leg being shaved and a needle! Whats gonna be the reason for this one being passed on when it doesnt make the grade?

Its just the way it is fella. Keepers hate lurchers as much if not more than foxes. I should imagine they did before the gun was even invented (in the kings hunting forests) and still will 500 years from now. The lurcher is the poachers dog and the poacher and keeper are old enemys, its really as simple as that! However, a steady fox killing lurcher really opens a keepers eyes, "my enemys enemy is my friend" and all that. There are keepers out there working lurchers, even keepers on some of the highest quality estates in the country as well as your more modest DIY keepers (like myself). In

Orston ground do lessons for 25 quid each, they usually want you to have 3 lessons for a complete novice untill they are happy for you to have a round on your own, but even then you will have the trapper with you so not totally alone. They should be able to lend you a club gun as well untill you decide which gun you want to buy yourself. All that said, its best if you can go with an experienced friend. All the best its a good crack.

Born Hunter replied to halloween man's topic in General Talk
The whole fecking country has gone Gypsy mad! Shame its because of the controversy as opposed to a genuine interest in the culture. I hope it doesnt do the image of coursing any more damage... -

PMSL!! HAHA In answer to the thread; I hunt because I enjoy the hunt in its many forms, it forfills an ancient instinct. I love the natural world, the countryside and working dogs, hunting makes me feel part of all that. Then there is the satisfaction of being able to go out and put food on the table. I think part of it is the male instinct to provide for his family but its a whole lot deeper than that and as such it isnt solely a male thing.

Is that incase one of the rabbits has a flick knife? FTB PMSL
