That first paragraph is pretty much exactly what I was told, Nick. Shite job and you're living waiting on your phone to ring. I wouldn't work for Schlumberger generally I don't think, fecking work-aholics! Besides, I'm going to invent something that'll make me a millionaire........................ just got to figure out what it is.

Wireline Logging Engineer. I went shooting with the chap that is the manager for the training school. Spoke to a few former field engineers too.

I know what you're saying Nick but the having little choice over when you're off didn't bother me (perhaps naively), just having a shit load of holiday would have been all that bothered me. What bothered me was initially having to take a pay cut, the job itself being shite, zero job security and being warned that it's potentially a dead end if you do the job too long (ie find it hard to move to anything else). I decided maybe I should just take a bit of time and assess my options, sometimes you don't know the worth of what you have sorta thing, ya know.

However did the site survive when he, how shall I say, 'took a leave of absence'?

Depends on so many things, for instance the quality of the time you will get with your family, how much you enjoy each job, the small print of each job and, whether we like it or not, the actual wage difference. I made a good contact which could very easily have led me to a job earning 2-3 times the money I'm on now and paying minimal tax on that too. He even offered to get me on the training course just to see if it's where I wanted to go. Potentially 6 months of the year holiday. Sounds perfect? A lot of things were'nt right so I've shyed away for the immediate future. My point is, i

Driving up the A60 towards Nottingham yesterday at about 5 in every dip of a field was thick fog. Literally no more than 4ft off the ground like a blanket. If you couldn't see over the hedge you would've swore it was a 100% clear evening. It was beautiful really, if the roads had been quieter I would have had a quick picture.

So a UKIP paramilitary wing........ LOL, the Lab/Lib/Con boys would love that! LOL

Well you've taught me something new Dan. I'll be trying that flight feather trick. Personally, I find a priest is just something else to carry around. A chap to the head with my stick is my preferred method. Only thing I hate are those bloody neck breaking plier things, from the amount of birds I've seen still alive after those. Tbh I just don't like breaking necks, makes hanging them unsightly at best.

Woodcock-nice to see them back
Born Hunter replied to tegater's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
Drawing to the end of yet another season on our Shoot on the Lincs/Leic border, for us it's deffinately been a bad year for them. Only put one up on a driven day and the only woodcock to be shot was on a walk up on earlier this month. One year I'll eventually manage to bag one! -
This thread has rapidly turned to shit! We were having an adult discussion based on logic........... now the fundamentalists have turned up. I'm out.

Possibly. Possibly some spiritual leaders too. Nah, they're all nuts!

I dunno Chris, I bet there's some smart biologists/psychologists out there that could give us a fair answer.

Chris, I can't really say why, they're just pleasing places. They're grand places that are peacefull and provoke thought. If you really push me I can think of half a dozen non religious places I get the same feeling. Some human inventions just make you sit back and think in peace as much as natures inventions. I don't particular care how my brain works, I'd have pursued neurology or something if I did, LOL.

I have the same level of zen trying to f**k around fly fishing! There's something about churches, cathedrals, minsters & abbeys though, they're naturally peaceful places and the grandeur and architecture is sort of pleasing to the eye and soul. Certainly spiritual places.... What soul is that then mate ? .........never seen them find that in "Silent Witness" ?? Have I gotcha ? Lol LOL, how do I describe my soul....... my emotional makeup! When I'm in such places I'm emotionally very content and balanced. There's no unbalance of emotion which I would say is almost a constant

I can't argue with that, but I have to say time in the mountains works better for me. So question... These spiritual places that we feel a bond with. What causes it? Do they contain a divine energy or is it merely an evolutionary response to 2000 years of christianity? I wouldn't say it's an evolved response to Christianity, I'd say these places have been designed specifically to provoke our spirituality. I get a similar sense of comfort when star gazing.

Funny that mate, I spent a bit of time sitting in the grounds of the local cathedral when my head was a bit of a shed. Nothing religious but a good place to find a bit of direction I found. That's not me being touched by God, just me needing a calming place to work my thoughts out.

When I read this title I actually thought it was about bushing for feral Bulls! I watched a program not that long ago where some native, Hawaians I believe, hunted feral Bulls with cur type dogs and when brought to bay, killed it with a native wooden spear!

A shot to the thigh would in all likeliness result in death through blood loss in under 5 mins. If you didn't want to have a lethal projectile, then a non lethal 12 gauge round at center of mass would stop them.
-
I'm sure many do mate, when faced with kill or be killed, how many will just freeze I wonder, it's an interesting question alright. It's one thing having the courage to engage a threat, that I imagine many will turn from, it's another to stand frozen and let an agressor 'do you'. Lift the gun, center of mass and squeeze the trigger before your agressor leaves you incapable. Not really much choice in the situation I'd of said but what do I know.
-
You're more qualified to answer that than me Socks...... with training how many soldiers crumble in a life or death situation?
-
So you would prefer to engage an intruder with either bat/knife or just ya bare hands, rather than give yourself a clear power superiority by arming yourself with a firearm? Given the choice, I'd be picking up a legally owned CQB 12 gauge or pistol. The greater my level of superiority in a violent situation the happier and safer I'll be. my good old trusty alloy bat lol maybe its just me mate, never really been a gun person tbh. and it certainly wouldnt give me a sense of superiority.most likely i wouldnt shoot them, cause the likely hood of them been armed is slim to zero, and th

Good post Seeker. I don't think I fear creation, just nothing to suggest it other than our absence of knowledge and so creation becomes something of a logical assumption to us humans.... It's here where we both show our faith, but for different reasons. My faith is that one day, as science is showing us how the Meccano set works, it will also show us how the box came to be..... Faith nonetheless!

I agree entirely Nick! Have strict legislation, annual competency tests, clean record etc etc. Basically, if you wouldn't with todays legislation be granted an FAC with the relevant justification, then you certainly shouldn't be granted a short firearm for any justification either. It won't ever happen though, we don't have that want for liberation and self sufficiency like the yanks do. The British like being looked after by the state.

I believe it's also been mentioned that with a armed population, the unarmed population, perhaps the weak who don't have the confidence in themselves to use a firearm defensively, will become targets of crime. I'm not sure that will be the case; If I have an elderly neighbour that is vulnerable I'll want to keep an eye on her. If indeed the weak suddenly become even more targeted, then the threat level will warrant an even greater responsibility to the strong of our society, those that carry defensive weapons. It's a damn fact I can be across that road to deal with a threat a lot faster th
