suitable gun for a youngster
andyfr1968 replied to alphasha's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The Falcon is very light, fair enough but it's made for adult frames. I'd go for the HW25 as has already been said, not only for the fact it is made for youngsters but it will also get him used to recoil and that's something PCP's can never do. Don't make the kid gun-shy.... Cheers and good luck! -
Fair comment, Edgar, but a lot of folks buy them, then realise they're maybe not exactly top notch and have to do something with them. At least the guy's asking for advice and not just blatting cluelessly away.... Co2's fine for hunting, so long as folks know there are limitations as to what they can do. Yes, there is no getting away from the fact that when it gets cold ( below 5 deg C ) they are crap but when it's not, they're fine. I use a Crosman King Ratty and it's a really good little tool. It's not my main gun but when I need something small, quiet and robust, it's great. I've be

Best pellets for SMK XS79
andyfr1968 replied to pcplod's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Hello, PCplod! Yeah, it can be a funny place this forum but most of the lads and lass's that contribute on here these days are good folks. TR Robb does a fair bit of stuff for the SMK's, he's an odd bloke to deal with but his stuff seems to work well. I've not had any dealings with his SMK gear but have had a few bits and bobs for Crosman's before that have been good. I use a King Ratty a bit and has been said, Co2 does lose power when it gets properly cold, so don't get too dishearted. For what it's worth, the best pellets I've found for the Ratty are H and N FTT's. Well made and -
Good write up, Phantom, cheers. Yellow snow gives the best clues....

Forget this daft notion of over-penetration! With the p*ss poor amount of power we have to play with, there really is no such thing. It's all about hitting the target in the right place and knowing the pellet will go in far enough to kill and not bounce off or not go in far enough.. It's better to put a hole through your target than not... Folks may argue about 'shock factor' but with only 12ft-lbs to start with, never mind after it's flown maybe 40 odd yards, we've not really got much anyway. Cheers.

Hi, Crow. I'm going back over ten years since I had that 52. I have another now in .177 that's below the legal limit as I no longer have an FAC. To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what was done other than the spring was changed and the internals cleaned up and polished. It was a .22 and like yours would shoot to around an inch at 50 or so yards. Still low recoil and a pleasure to shoot. One tip I have picked up about them is for some reason they are LESS powerful in .25. I know that shouldn't be the case with a springer but in the 48/52/54, it is. Strange.... Cheers.

Hi. Crow. Mine used to give 32ft-ib with Accupels (on FAC over here). Maybe the main-springs not the same?? Dunno.... Have it checked, it'd be interesting to see what your's is putting out.... Cheers. Edit to say... I had it tuned by a local gunsmith, so maybe it had an unfair advantage....

Hi, mate. If you're looking for stuff to improve your SMK, have a look at TR Robb's site. I've always said you can't polish a turd but it's a good place to start for that.... Cheers. Edit to say... Sorry, didn't want to sound harsh, it's a basic gun that does have potential. A lot of folks take the p*ss out of Co2 guns, but I'm not one as I use them.

Be very careful with ebay, fellas... Yes, there are the odd bargain's to be had but there's also a hell of a lot of crap copies and seconds too. As to the lads who've had good stuff, please PM the seller's details to those interested. I've been stung 3 times on ebay with scopes (doh!! dick-head!!) and you can't tell what the hell you've bought 'till you've TRIED!! to set it up on your gun. Good luck! Cheers. Edit to say... I've had good dealings with JSR in the past and can't fault the products or service I've had.

Hi, mate. Whatever one person says about a caliber, someone else will say something else. It's been a topic for airgunners to argue over that's as old as airgunning!! The bottom line is either will do the job if you do. Check out the 'search' function on this site and you'll pull up more contradicting opinions about this subject than any other. Pointed or domed, anyone?? Cheers.
-
Hi, mate. It can if you can!! I'd not tried the JSB's in mine but found Accupell's worked best out of all the ones I did try. Give it a couple of hunderd shots or so and it should settle down just fine. Cheers. PS... Let us know how you get on....

They still make the 52! I had one years ago then sold it. Always regreted selling it and looked for another one for ages. Found one a while back from an add I placed in the 'wanted' section on here. It's .177 and sorry, Farmboy, it' NOT for sale! Good luck though.... Top class springer, very under-rated, hardly any recoil, built to last forever, powerful (!!!) and very accurate. The only down side is they are bloodly heavy! Cheers.

Hi, mate. I had the same problem with my 90 a while back, same as you looked at buying the gear from Theoben and deciced it's a little on the expensive side of takeing the p*ss. Not like them at all. Ahem..... You do, however, need the proper connector, or as fast as you undo it, it'll leak makeing it a right pain to get the pressure right in the ram. They need about 23 bar I think, but that depends on caliber. I gave up in the end and took it to Wighill Park Guns who sorted it for me. I can't grumble as it's the only problem I've had in 12 years of ownership. Cheers and good l

thinking about a change
andyfr1968 replied to dogger's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Hi, mate. Why do you want to change? I'd used springers for years and always loved them. I still do! Until a while back the only dealings I'd had with PCP's were first generation ones that were a little, er, troublesome... The modern stuffs in a different league though. If you've used springers before, then you won't have too much trouble changeing back, but if you've not then you may be in for a load of grief. They don't shoot the same way at all. You can shoot a PCP pretty much any old way and it'll still hit the mark. Try that with most springers and you'll be pi**ing into the -
Bipod on a under-lever
andyfr1968 replied to Countrykid's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Good point, Darryl, but your Vmached 97's not like most other springers, it's in a league above. The recoil on your 97 will be a hell of a lot less than most and that's the problem with 'normal' springers. Cheers. -
Bipod on a under-lever
andyfr1968 replied to Countrykid's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Aww damn. will have to try and get a new gun then, problem is I don't really like PCPs because I have to fire it off after,so if I take like 5 shots and 5 rabbits then I have to fire like 100+ more times to take the cylinders out No ya don't, mate. They can be stored safely under pressure with no detriment to the gun in any way. Co2's shouldn't be stored for long periods with gas in, but PCP's are fine. Cheers. Edit to say... As has been said, bipods and springers don't tend to mix. Rest it on something soft so it can recoil happily in it's own way.... -
Phantom highly rates the Milbro pellets for putting in a Tic Tac box and rattling to attract magpies, surely the Eley Wasps would be up to that task??? Seriously though, I used to use the 5.6mm flavour in my BSA Airsporter and the performance was outstanding Yeah, they used to be great in the old British guns. I used them in an old Airsporter too and they were first class. Long time ago though.... Real shame Eley have dropped the ball. Cheers.

Around 200 bar should not be too far off. My 410 runs best with 190, gives me around shots (.22). Don't be temted to over-fill it, you'll ruin it. Start a little low, say 170ish, then go from there. What works best for one gun may not suit another. Cheers. PS. Don't rely too much on the built in guage, they can be very inaccurate. Mine reads around 20 bar high. Have yours checked.

Hi, mate. Lighnings are crap. Poorly built, rubbish trigger, recoil's horrible even for a springer, stupid scope rail, a pig to work on, just don't bother.. Look at HW, Webley, Air Arms. And before anyone jumps on me, yes I've got one....... Wish I'd not.... Cheers. PS. You could buy mine! It's got a gas-ram too, but it's still crap!!!! Edit to say... The ram did improve things but you can't polish a turd...

Hi, folks. I posted on a thread a little while back about how different pellets can perform through different guns and remembered how well Wasps went through an HW80 (.22) I had many moons ago. They were well made, consistant, old school fair enough but worked really well, so I bought a tin to try out again. Ok, so I'm going back maybe 15+ years but the sh*t I've just put through my 410 bears little or no resemblence to the Wasps I used (and I used a lot!!) back then. Total crap!!! They look like they've been hand made by Steven Hawkins on a bad day! What's happened to them?? R

Hi, mate. I've shot many ducks with non and FAC airguns, no problems. As Phantom's said, head shots only and they'll go down quack, er, I mean quick as you like!! Cheers and good luck. PS. Let us know how you get on....
-
Yup! Your dead right, OM. If you think about it, as you're looking through your scope, you're looking in a dead straight line to infinity, practicly. The shot as it leaves the gun does not, first it goes up, then it goes down. Because the shot leaves the gun below relative to where you're looking, it must go upwards to meet your point of zero, then go down again.. If the sight-line is not DIRECTLY above the barrel, then it will go slightly from one side to the other. Think about it..... The point is that as you look through your scope and set it up on your gun, your X-hairs must

Hi, mate. If it's function you're after rather than looks, have a look at the RWS 48, 52 or 54. The 48 and 52 are the same action on different wood, while the 54 has a floating action that kills felt recoil. They are an old design but they're still made and a good few second hand. Those that have them tend to keep them though. I had a 52 many years back, sold it (wished I'd not!!), then tried to find another. Took bloody months before I found a good one!! The only down side is they are very heavy. Top classs and very under-rated IMO. Cheers.

Hi, mate. I owned an HW80 for a long time and really rated it. Top class springer! I'd never used the TX until a short while ago when I had the chance to use a mate's. Well impressed! They are both on the heavy side, the HW's maybe a little easier to use being a break-barrel, but the TX shoots so much better. Hardly any recoil and a trigger that's very nearly as good as the Record unit on the HW. Whatever you go for, you won't go far wrong but if I was going for another springer, I think I'd go for the TX. Cheers.

Stick to a good dome-head, LH. H points are ok for very close range stuff but slow down very quickly in flight, and don't tend to be anything like as accurate. As has been said, some places do a selection of pellets, so try as many as you can. What works best in one gun may be sh*te in another, even in guns of the same types. Airguns can be fussy little buggers, sometimes! Cheers. Edit to say... As UM has said, not always the most expensive stuff works best. I too found Wasps worked best in an HW80 (.22) I had years ago! My HW90 sprays Loguns like a shotgun but loves Baracudas
