.20 tends to shoot a lot closer to .22 than .177 as the pellets tend to be around the same weight. 12 to 15 grains. .20 does hold it's energy better (mostly...) as it's got a smaller frontal area than .22 so the good old air that we breath hits it a little less as it flys along to hopefully, kill the target. I've used .177, .20 and .22 and I really don't think it matters a s**t at the ranges we shoot at with less than 12ft-lb's. These days I mainly use .20 and .22 but that's just because it happens to be the caliber my two main guns are. I also use .177 when the fancy takes me

Which ever good quality round-head suits your gun best will do you fine for all that you need. Cheers.

F***ing postal service!?!! I'll re-send them this week. Loguns, Dynamics and Baracudas in .177. I'll also put in some Loguns in .22 as I really rate them. Cheers, Davy.

Hi, mate. I've used one now for over ten years and it really is a top class springer. So long as the pittings on the outside of the barrel (?), so what. It 's not going to make any change to where your shots land... Enjoy your new gun! Cheers.
-
Davy? Did you ever get those pellets I sent you? If not, let me know so as I can re-send them for you to test!! Cheers.......

I know how you feel, SS. I'd used springers for the past 30 odd years and had little to do with PCP's since the first ones came out 20 or so years back. Had a play with some modern ones last summer and treat myself to a 410c. Wow... Enough said... Cheers.

how do people rate these
andyfr1968 replied to youngferreter09's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Yup, keep the Xocet! I have one with a gas-ram fitted that I must admit I don't use too often and always seems to be 'on loan' to a mate, but it's a really good simple little gun that just keeps on doing it's job. Cheers. -
Hi, Quail. I use a 410c and I'm very happy with it. Handles and shoots really well for me, can't fault it. My gun seems to shoot best with Logun Penetrators, H and N FTTs and RWS Super Domes (.22). It's currently fitted with the AA silencer but I'm going to fit my HW one to it soon, as the original fitment's OK but not best. As for a scope, bloody hell the choice is endless!! I like to keep things fairly basic as I think if it can go wrong, one day it will. I use a simple Walther 4-12x50 30mm tube I picked up from JS Ramsbotoms for a very good price. Again, I can't fault it for wha

AA S410 Air Cylinder Damage
andyfr1968 replied to Roly's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
So long as the thread's ok, it shouldn't be a problem. The finish on the AA's not the best, my 410 goes rusty as soon as a dark cloud blows past.. They need to be clean and dry and stay that way. So long as the seller is willing to stand by the gun, then fair enough. A wipe over with an oily rag's all that's needed to keep the outside sorted and so long as the gun's been filled corectly and works as it should then you'll be fine. Cheers. -
hi andy it wasn't a bad introduction to PCP's was it how you getting on with the AAS410? and did ya get my txt recently? regards davy Hi, Davy. The 410's great, I'm really getting on well with it! I still use the HW90 from time to time but my springers are mostly gathering dust these days. I did get a PM from you a while back asking how's things and I did reply. Didn't you get it? And also did the pellets I sent ages ago ever make it to you? If they didn't, let me know and I'll send some more for you to test. There were some Loguns, Dynamics and Baracudas, all in .17

Rangefinding with a Mildot Reticle
andyfr1968 replied to Marksman's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I agree with Edgar, range finding comes from practice and the old out for a walk, take a random point then pace it out is a good way to practice. I have scopes with mil-dots but I don't use them as aim points. It's very easy to just think 'yeah, it's so much further/nearer than my zero, so I'll just use a mill-dot as my aim point'. Some folks rely on them, fair enough. If it's what you're used to then go for it, but it doesn't work for me... Cheers. -
I've shot with that gun and it really does shoot as well as it looks. Lovely rifle! Cheers, Davy!!

Looking for aq new PCP
andyfr1968 replied to silentshot1's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Hi, mate. I don't really know much about the Armex other than a test I read in one of the Airgun mags a year or so back. They said it was good value etc, but then they always do... You will never really read an honest test in the rags, as they are too scared to p*ss off the importer or whoever in case they lose advertiseing revenue.... I'm fairly new to PCP's as I've mainly shot springers for the past 30 odd years. I treated myself to a AA410c a few months ago after an invite to shoot with a few mates (thanks again, Davy!!) and had the chance to try a few modern PCP's. I had a go with -
Hi, PC. A shorter barrel on a springer makes no difference to the accuracy at all. The important stuff happens in the first ten inchs or so of the barrel in a spring guns. The same's not true for PCPs, as has been said, but I'm assumeing you're still not after one?? Go for a carbine every time if you can, much easier to handle in a confined space, hide, car, woodland etc. Cheers.

Advice for New shooters/Hunters........
andyfr1968 replied to Marksman's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Sound advice about recoil and how to handle a springer but what's all that crap about dieseling? Sure, if you put a comustable substance into the compresion chamber, it's going to burn but you'd only need to lubricate that in a springer with leather or (maybe) a rubber 'o' ring piston seal. Pretty much all the spring guns that have been made for the past 20ish years use nylon or similar seals that are self lubricateing. If you put lube into the cylinder you'll soon ruin the gun, as well as takeing it over 'the limit' as described above. That bit of advice must be at least 20 years old! -
Yeah, Santa's a real cool guy... He's brought me some more debt, some hangovers and made me even more jaded than before..... Humbug!!!!
-
That's a spot on point, Zini... It all depends on the shooter. I'm fairly set in my my ways and sometimes forget the basics.... The shooter makes the shot, not the gun... Start with the shortest range that you can shoot to a reliable kill zone, say 30mm with the game we shoot for. If that's 10 or 40 yards, that's what you need to consider. Start close, then when your skill gains, maybe a little further.. Cheers.
-
I've always used a 30 yard zero too, whatever the caliber. Seems to be a good compromise for the ranges we shoot at. Cheers and good luck!
-
Thanks, SH. I've lowered the fill pressure on mine to what you said and while I'm getting around 20ish less shots, it does shoot better. I'm fairly new to PCP's! Good advice! Cheers.

Best value spring rifle
andyfr1968 replied to pcplod's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Stick to one of the HW or Webley range for a not too expensive springer, The 57 and 99 (as said) are well worth a look. First class! Webley's are good value aswell, I use an old Xocet from time to time and it's a lovely gun to use. I fitted a gas-ram to it a while ago and I can't fault it for what it is. Lightnings are very over-rated. Badly built, crap trigger,'twangy' as they come and a sod to work on for such a basic gun. I know some folks rave on about them but (please, no disrespect to anyone and also I do have a Lightning...) they are often folks first gun so they maybe don't have mu -
Done! Phantom's right, I think. There are so many airguns out there that any legislation that may come in will be useless... The only folks who'll register (or whatever) their guns will be law abideing shooters. The crims and the idiots will still carry on breaking the laws that already exist. After hand-guns were banned, did it make it any more illegal to commit murder?? No, it f***ing didn't!! Stupid people do stupid things, always have, always will.... End of. Cheers.

Just a quick foot-note, Ratty.. Have a look on ebay for your Co2 bottles. They tend to be a lot cheaper than gun shops, especialy if you can buy in bulk. Cheers and good luck.

Home tunes for the Lightning XL
andyfr1968 replied to silentshot1's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The best tune up for a Lightning is to PX it for an HW99..... Edit... Sorry. -
Cheers for the feedback. This has 82 stamped on the wood near the trigger guard, so im wondering if this was when it was manufactored? If its rare, then im a bit reluctant to use it much as this one is in mint condition and it would be a shame to take it out in the field! They're rare because they were never that popular in the UK. Like Edgar says, get out and enjoy it! Cheers.
-
Yup! I had one too in the early 's and it was a good solid little gun. A mate at the time had an HW35 and the shot at least as well and was a lot lighter too. Good gun, mate, and quite rare these days. Cheers.
