  1. Hemp is a great material and we did use it for years I have no argument with people that still use it in fact I have two 25yrd long nets made by mick mansbridge and they are brilliant nets BUT UNFORTUNATELY hemp needs more looking after drying etc. And when I get home after a cold day out with the ferts I honestly can't be asked to dry them all etc.But I do like to use micks longnets weather permitting.
  2. Having made and used most of the net materials over the years my personal preference is spun poly it handles nice doesn't rot. It's easy to knit with and best of all the bright colours make the nets so much easier to watch whilst over the holes and nets getting left behind seems to be a thing of the past We still find the odd net left behind by someone poaching but they are normally the green or brown hemp or nylon ones. I must admit I personal like the modern day materials
  3. Know how you feel mate we lost our best Jill a couple of years ago she was 14yrs and 1 week old and she bolted hundreds of rabbits in her lifetime and mothered some great working Kitts She never so much as nipped anyone in her life she was a great loss to our team my niece who ferrets with us still gets weepy eyed if she is mentioned. I wouldn't mind a ferret court full of ferrets like her
  4. Well done mate nice post and pics
  5. As the weather gets colder and the food scarecer it will be back alright it's probably after what food it can smell in the hutch but if the ferrets get in its way they are no match for a hungry fox Even if it damages the hutch your ferrets will be out and gone. Hope you sort it mate good luck
  6. The trouble with foxes is when they have got there mind set they will keep coming back. We back onto fields and when we used to race pigeons we had one fox that wouldn't give up no matter what we tried. The only option was the silenced rimfire out the dorma window and put a bullet in its head. Instant death end of problem.depends on where you live backdrop etc. Or try and borrow a fox cage trap and a silenced 410 Good luck with it mate cos when you have got a determined fox you have got a problem
  7. Looks like you had a very productive day mate and 4 black uns in the same day you don't t see that very often. Well done
  8. Great post these old characters are thin on the ground now unfortunately I still remember the old poacher Stan who I met whilst bunking off school in the woods close to the school. He let me watch him ferreting and I was hooked and 37yrs later I still love the sport. I suppose one day all us on hear will be known by the next generation as the OLD BOYS
  9. Yeah no how you feel mate we have got to get started soon but with all the cover around we keep putting it off We have also got some more new permissions this summer so a lot of ground to get round this season At least you had a big of fun out with your lad
  10. Nice one mate excellent start to the season as said lets hope mixy isn't to rife this season
  11. Give ours a bit of fish now and again ie mackerel etc the ferrets love it
  12. That's we we use as well seems to do the trick for our team
  13. Very true Max Abell... I've hunted rabbits in most counties throughout the UK ...really enjoyed it.. However,.we always knew, that sooner or later, we would kill the goose, that laid the golden egg. Taken some large quantities in the Far North of Scotland,...hunting over terrain that was best described as being, a rabbit paradise...But,...even today,..when I catch 40 or so rabbits,..I often start to think,.maybe,...enough is enough... Time moves on,.nothing remains the same,.but still enough shushis around,.to see me out yeh true Phil I'm in my 50s and not as fit and agile as
  14. The rabbits are definitely not in the numbers they used to be in the 70s when I started ferreting We are lucky enough to have thousands of acres of permissions and the rabbit numbers now tend to go up and down year to year some seasons we have a good year or couple of weeks years on the trot then other years we're struggling to get small numbers Yet years ago we could ferret the same warrens year after year and get roughly the same amount of rabbits so I'm not sure what's changed cos more people ferreted them days and mixy was worse them days than now so don't know what the answer is. ?????
  15. Never bought any nets off Andy as I have always made my own but I have never heard anything but 100% satisfaction about andys nets There are some good net makers on the site that made good quality nets at a very reasonable price and if the day comes where I can't or don't want to make my own I will be giving one of these guys a ring. Long may they continue
  16. Great pics to all As I have said before we need a hunting life calendar because these pictures just say it all without words
  17. Well done mate nicely built
  18. Our vasectomised hob and our castrated hob live with 10 Jill's in a big ferret court all year with no problems If anything the Jill's jump on him the lucky sod he gets so much attention during the summer that he does the business without marking any of the Jill's. We occasionally get a Jill with a phantom pregnancy trying to drag the others to her nest but it soon passes. We use my mates proven complete hob with our best Jill if we want to breed ourselves a few Kitts.the Jill is taken out the court and put into a big cage when she has a couple of weeks to go so she can have her young in pea
  19. Land has now been allocated to someone on the site thanks
  20. Is anyone looking for some rabbiting permission in the Chelmsford Essex area ? Got a phone call from a lady with some horse paddocks says she's over run with rabbits and needs them controlled. Also by the sounds of it the landowner that surrounds her ground hasn't got a problem with someone going on his side of the fence to control the rabbits so may lead to more permission. It is to far for me to go and to be honest we have enough permissions to keep happy at the moment and don't want to take anymore on at present. May be a good opportunity for a newbie or someone looking to increase there
  21. one of the best posts I have ever read on this site vin. So true we need to stop worrying about what colour or what our ferrets are crossed with and start worrying about preserveing the working ability of the WORKING ferret before we loose it.
  22. EXACTLY the one as I said irresponsible owners that breed without thinking
  23. Well done mate keep at it the more you do the better you will get at it It's a nice buzz when you start catching in nets you have made yourself, not sure what size net you have done there personally I use 4ft mainly but also Cary a few 3ft 6" ones all shaped and all 18 meshes wide it's up the individual which they prefer. As said keep it up and if you don't there are some good net makers on the site that sell nets of all sizes
