I gotta say I just use squares of cardboard, cut them into anout 3" or 4" side length, tape them to a dark background, carbboard spreyed black works well, it makes it really easy to center the crosshars on the middle of the square, or simply draw a square on a pice of card, again cereal boxes work really well as you can stand them up on their own, open them up flat and hold then with a couple of split sticks, prickers for holding snare wires up work well.

Need a new foresight for .410 Cooey
danebrewer10 replied to Tyla's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I've shot guns both with and my personal preference, without fluo beads, I find the fluo beads are just too bright and big, they just seem to me to dominate the sight picture, I find the bead useful, I think the gun'd look naked without one, if the barrel has no rib and is just perfectly round then I'd think a bead'd be preferable, perhaps it'd stop you from looking down the side of the barrel? I'm not sure, a little tip on brass beads, get some low or medium strength thread lock and whack some of that on the threads, it stops te bead from coming undone and you losing it, the bead on my berett -
Hi all, I was wondering what you use to clean your sound mods, as I have a SAK for my HMR, and with all things firearms, I'm a clean freak. I've tried fairly liquid, soap flakes and washing powder, the latter seems to eat the aluminium as it's pretty bright after a soak in that being an alkali, (where the aluminium has been eaten from the flame cutting of the hot gases) fairy dosen't seem do do much and soap flaes similarly clean the mod ish, but there's still a bit left on, the powder residue is kinda greasy, but I don't want to use a solvent as I want to be able to dry the mod, so a water b

without the mod it is whole bunch louder! if you're shooting in a valley, it sure does roll up and down especially if the air is cold and still the mod does change the POI fairly significantly, I guess it sounded quiter as there were no surfaces for the sound to reflect off of back to you, unmoderated you do get a sting in your ears after a couple of shots, so not really recommended, I do have to ask the question as I bet others have been thinking it.... why the muzzle brake on an HMR? (apart from looks of course) that'd direct the blast more towards you i'd have thought?

Anschutz Synthetic Stocks
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Cheers that's a help, it does look pretty similar to the CZ actions I think is that an older rifle? 'cause from what I've seen when I had my action out of the stock a fair while ago there's a definite trigger mech hanging off the bottom of the rifle like this:http://www.shootingtimes.co.uk/imageBank/a/Anshutz_action.jpg (only in .17 HMR) what are the trigger pulls like? Cheers DB -
just sit over a potential hot (or cold) spot and squeak, I squeak on my hand, though you need a gap between your teek to do it, no a gaping hole like cletus, but a small gap to let the air through, kinda like the WAM whistle, I had one the other afternoon, snowy, squeaked, and he appeared out of a wood and sat there, squeaked again, he jumped back into the wood, saw him running up the hill towards me on the other side of a fence, couldn't get a shot 'cause of all the wires in the way, so when I did manage to poke the rifle through the fence, he was too far off and wouldn't hold still enough fo

Anschutz do/did make rifles with iron sights, I guess the barrel must've been shortened at some stage and the rear sight removed for the objective bell of the scope.... not too worried about dims, though the distance btw the front of the mag well and the action screws could be useful... Thanks again.... DB

Extreme range pheasants.
danebrewer10 replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Have a read of this: http://www.fieldsportsmagazine.com/articles_shoot_towering_targets.php One bloke reckons he can bring down birds at 90 yards! hmmm a good party piece, but not for live quarry, it's like the odd dissapointing youtube vid you see of people shooting game at silly ranges of 600m plus, if you want to do long range shooting, do to a range, or if you want it to be realistic, something like the WMS steel challenge range in Wales -
absolutely no reason, I use a bereta 28" silver pigeon on clays, they're lighter, point faster, and don't make you as tired so fast... if you shoot 70 or 100 birds, 28gm loads, you know you've shot, but it dosen't hurt.

Extreme range pheasants.
danebrewer10 replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
same here, 90 yard pheasants? if you want to go target shooting, go to a clay ground!!, and as for practicing, I'll bet there's no clay ground with a 90m tower, what's the point? -
I'd have to get them side by side and compare them for myself, it seems the DM80 is a tad quieter, but the ASE is just a slightly different noise to the SAK.

£48 is nothing, been looking for a mag for my Tikka M590 .223, a 5rnd mag is retailing at £75 and a 3rnd mag at £58!! Now thats feckin expensive!! ATB Phil perhaps not much relative to others, but for me, I can't justify it for what does take vey few manufacturing steps indeed, they must be making a killing on those things.... Please explain- I would have tought they would, there's not that many manufacturing steps, each one probably takes about an hour to make, so there would be a pretty big mark up, they can charge the high prices because they know people will buy

I don't see how the bullet gets faster one it's out of the barrel? (hmmm invention time- bullets with a booster rocket...) surely the crack comes only after the bullet has built up enough air pressure in front of it to create the crack, but I'd have thought that would be more or less right in front of the muzzle, thinking about how fast the bullet is travelling. the bullet is travelling at supersonic speeds right after it leaves the muzzle, once it out, it's already slowing down actually having thought about this you only hear the crack when the object passes you, so the shock wave has to

I hope those mags do get more popular so they come down in price!! £48 for whai essentially a piece of pressed steel and a spring? hmmm, will definitely wait a bit...

I have the 1517 as well, my groups aren't as bad as yours but certainly not stellar (to the order of 1"-1 1/2", though I did shoot a 3 round group not bigger that a 5p bit edge to edge, I can slide a fag paper between the barrel and forend, but not a piece of regular paper, I think that when I rest the rfle on a surface, that the forend is bent and touches the barrel, more so if I lean on the stock, I had it test fired and it was returning one hole 5 shot groups, so the barrel is not to blame, I guess it was only sitting very lighly on the forend, closer to the trigger guard and not right out

I don't think you're going to get that much improvement, not in any kind of value for money silencer, I have a SAK, which I think is for a .22 anyways, and that's plenty quiet, I think you've got to accept that the HMR is fairly noisy- super sonic bullets, but you could pay a lot more for a few extra dB of sound reduction, but you've got to ask yourself, is it reallly nessecary, and am I willing to pay the price?

hah, that's pretty cool....not sure about it's practical uses in a sporting context though

I think they're ok, I've not had too much experience w. CF rifles, myself but I think they're just regulat SP rounds like the wincheseter super X, federal power shok sp rounds, that sort of thing, lets be honest though, you get hit by a SP bullet and it's pretty much game over! I'd think they'd be fine for everything up to fallow...
-
We all have a view but anyone who has any experience knows that is daft, the .22lr is the biggest selling calibre in the world. Any calibre can ricochet and you need to be careful with EVERY shot of every calibre, saying you want a HMR because it does not ricochet as much as .22lr is NOT a valid reason unless you can demonstrate unsafe ground. In simple terms, if you say you want HMR over .22lr to the FEO because it is safer, he will think you are an idiot who reads too many forums! ATB! thought it may not be a valid reason on it's own, surely it won't harm your application

AFAIK, there is no law stipulating that you need to remove the bolt from the gun, I just de cock my annie and leave the bolt in.

right, I have some experience here, I have carried and usd for about 4 or so years an Opinel no9 inox knife, I've had a few over the years and the blade has always been too thick and the steel as been too crap. this has brilliant steel, it's inexpensive so it won't matter too much if you lose it, it loks open securely, rides well in the pocket wit no pointy or sharp bits, brilliant, I wouldn't spend any more money on an everyday knife when I have the opinel! I recommend two knives, one for farm use and the other for use on game, IMO, I don't see the need for a gut hook, they look good perhaps

These are all reasons I imagine what made the B25 feel nicer than the longer and heavier sporters I have shot with. I would prefer to buy just one shotgun which I can use for both clay and game and therefore a lighter gun would be nice. Does this make sense? I imagine that I can just use lighter 21/24g cartriges when shooting lots of clays. I'm going to try and sit on my hands until I have picked up lots of different guns. one gun lets you get really used to the way it feels so when you do have to take a really fast snap shot you'll be "one with the gun" I shoot 28gm clay loads

lamping foxes with a shotgun
danebrewer10 replied to RogerTheCat's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
it's tricky, unless you have someone else holding the lamp, your first shot will dislodge the lamp from where you're pointing it, plus all the smoke that come out when you shoot (which you can't really see during the day) will be picked out by the lamp beam and hang like a cloud in front, so best bet is to get someone else to hold the lamp -
the first 38 means 28 im guessing lol aah yes..... I did consider once creating a break action punt gun, but I thought I'm not fat heavy enough to counterbalance it..... :D
