  1. what I was trying to say is: steel cheapest.- 2 sizes up from what used to be used in lead is good. so where you used lead 3s use steel 1s. good performance with the proper shot charge and not over stretching the range (as with any cartridge) bismuth- second cheapest though still expensive closer to lead in density. used to be quite brittle due to the impurities in the shot, Eley's Evo 3 shot is supposed to have sorted that. High density shot, way too expensive for me where I might not even get to use any. performance better than lead- tighter patterns with open chokes. Gamebore T
  2. I hope I'm wrong but I feel your post seems a little condescending, as with the tense in my post, I haven't actually had the opportunity to shoot geese or any other waterfowl for that matter, but there's nothing to beat enthusiasm and I'd like to be prepared that's all. I guess for me, "range" would be about 40-50m (personally I'd try and not shoot at ranges over 40m as targets at the clay ground don't go out further than that, so I wouldn't be confident of how much lead to give, but one pellet behind the ear'ole is better than 300 behind it's butt! having said that, live game is much differe
  3. I'd like to see it in a ruger No 1 and see how hot you can make it!, I'd love one in .45-70 though....
  4. Hi, have a look HERE at a test I did for what I consider to pass muster as fox cartridges, 50gm BB and 36gm AAA some pretty interesting results! ATB DB
  5. no me neither, but I watch mythbusters!
  6. OH SPEAK UP I CAN'T HEAR YOU! you should really push a couple of dry patches through the bore to clear any solvent out before you fire it, that'll probably be the cause, I clean my HMR each and every time I use it, as it's effectively the same as a CF rifle shooting copper jacketed bullets, I just use a patch with a tiny amount of oil on it and push that through after I've finished cleaning and the first shot it's on target, I don't find it has to be "shot in" again after cleaning.
  7. have it zeroed at 100m, then the round is only about 1/2 an inch high at 50 or 70m, and you can shoot without any appreciable hold oiver out to 120m or so, I have mine zerord at 100m and don't worry about holding over or under, just bear in mind that such a tiny bullet will be blown off course fairly easily, though not as easily as you may be led to believe as I have found out.
  8. as others have said, just spread it out on the ground and burn it, modern powders tend to burn pretty slowly by comparison with old BP.
  9. Yeah I looked on their site after seeing something on them on the fieldsports channel, appareltly they were at the CLA this year, I must've missed them, beautiful guns but way outside my price range... it's a shame that you can't get a decent english gun at a reasonable, (ie cheaper) price having said that there is a massive ammount of work that goes into them.... I'd be interested to see what would happen if the English gun makers clubbed together and made shotguns like the spanish do under a new name, at better prices for us mere mortals, made and finished in england! now that could be a
  10. HI all, I'm looking at saving up for a shotgun in the 10-15K range, something special nothing too old, preferably english , or a new gun, looking at the Merkel 60E, 65E, and 45E S/S guns, does anyone know anything about them? on the web they look like fine guns, obviously will go on for ever, (they are german after all)- looking to november for some help here, as I don't have easy access to either a Frankonia store or Suhl..... Cheers DB
  11. not using washing powder is tosh, you just stink otherwise Just use one without any fabric whiteners, that is supposed to be the thing that scares them off, any clothes will work fine, but a drab olive shirt and trousers will work, otherwise just pop down the MIL-SURP shop, and buy ex-army DPM stuff, pretty cheap, take a good look and make sure what you-re buying hasn't worn thin or got any holes and away you go, IMO the toughest and best for the money! DB
  12. urgh man that is just gross, what a moron, what was he thinking?
  13. well this is a funny thing, I have noticed that driving about I see more splatted badger than foxes, surely this means that thery are extremely numerous and surely a regulated cull by licensed individuals, like how they are able to kill cormorants affecting fish farms, is in order?
  14. I have this question as well as there are some geese on the stubble near me, just hoping they'll be around in sept! (probably not though.... harumph!) well I was sold a box of 3" no3 steel last year and I asked around on this forum and coupled with my own opinion, it won't be enough to bring down a goose at range, so I'm on the look out for a 3" size 1 or BB steel in around 36 or 40gm, but as for Hevi shot and other high density shot? BWAAAHHHAAAHHAAAHHHAAA! oh ... oh dear you must be joking? £23 for 10? no thanks, that frankly is a rip off, no matter the benefits, I just can't jus
  15. aah bugger me another CAM, gotta say the only other place I've ever seen one is in sporting shooter mag with Robert Bucknell..... are they still available? Cheers DB
  16. hun that's an idea. what about buying a single scope mount and using it upside down to hold the camera? (with the dovetail portion facing upwards)
  17. gotta say what works well in someone elses rifle, even of the same model won't necessarily be good in your gun, I'd just try a few boxes of various well known ammo manufacturers.... DB
  18. I has a pair of 7x42 swaro SLC's, superb bins, 7 or 8X is the best bet, coupled with a 40mm+ objective they gather enough light to still be bright in low light, and the mag is powerful enough for some pretty long range and detailed observation without getting much shake as you'd start to get with 10X
  19. harris engineering and stoney poind both make bipods for sitting and kneeling use, so around 3@ high, for weight, you can't get much lighter than a Kimber Montana, it weighs I think as I recall 5lb 12oz... now that's a light gun....
  20. hmmm, I don't really like the ranges they're shooting at, shooting at a target from a standing position is hard enough let alone if it's running, I'd leave those far away ones be...., take the ones closer in for a better kill and less chance of wounding... DB
  21. holy shit, he's waving that thing round like magic wand!!! jeez.... what a complete moron....
  22. I'd just cut through the case where the powder is, and get rid of the powder by burning it and then dismantle the rest of the cartridge, it's completely safe (I have done it lots of times) and wrap the brass and primers up in a few bags and bin it..., you could soak the primers in water for a few days beforehand to help denature the priming compound... DB
  23. yeah squirrel is tasty, I had some a while ago, as you say their skins seem to be glued on!
  24. by the same token why is .223 NOT legal for roe when it is more than good enough? DB It is in scotland I know, I left that out as I thought folks would realise I was referring to "the south" of which I am most southern- East Sussex in fact! I did think about going back and putting it in , I have asked about the likelihood of it being made legal south of the border, but it looks like we'll have to stick to the smaller deer species ATM Cheers DB
  25. by the same token why is .223 NOT legal for roe when it is more than good enough? even though it is legal, I still, like others wouldn't really want to use it unless there was no other option.. Cheers DB
