I guess that might be because the HMR, because it is so fast does tend to fragment on hitting the ground, where a more solid .22WMR bullet might bounce, but then .22LR is renowned for bouncing on the ground..... having said that, I did manage to get a ricochet after I missed a rabbit on a ploughed field (with the HMR), must've hot a stone at a very shallow angle.... I think you're only likley to get ricochets on stone or very hard ground either baked clay or frozen ground.... unless others can tell me otherwise...? I must say that restriction is quite odd though...

RE: cartridges for duck/geese
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
just an update on the speed/lead thing of the slower Rottweil cartridges, I just had a flick through the free "Clay Shooter" magazine, and found an article comparing cartridge speeds and lead needed at different ranges. Admittedly, the values given are for 7.5 shot at various velocities, and if I compare the slower Rottweil sz 2 to my Eley Grand Prix, the Rottweil is doing 1230ft/s, and the eley is trucking along at around 1425 ft/s. I know the sz 2 pellets will slow down at a lower rate than the size 6 shot in the game carts, so the difference in lead needed may actually be reduced by the s -
asa I always say, quality is paramount in a scope, as though you think youi'll be getting a bargain with a feature filled scope at alow price, you'll regret it in the future.... I did. as the budget is fairly low, I'd recomment a look at Leupold or Meopta I don't really know of any others in tha price bracket I can recommend, Burris I have heard, especially in the schope designed for the Sako Quad is crap, also steer away from airgun scopes as I said, as they look good, but don't really perform.... also, to get quality at a reasonable price, if he's willing, take a look at the second hand scop

Hi all, just throught, that as there has been somne interest in non toxic cartridges for the forthcoming season, I might post some patterning results I did a while ago and some I did the other day, I paterned: Lyalvale 3" 36gm no3 (3.2mm) Max Game steel- 243 pellets Rottweil 23/4" 32gm no2 (3.75mm) Steel Game- 145 pellets both were shot with a Beretta Silver Pigeon S with 28" barrels and 1/4 and 1/2 Briley flush fit chokes from 35m which when you actually look at it, is a bloody long way! so probably at the "long" end of what most people shoot at..... or "part time" or opport

which choke for pigeons when using a semi auto ?
danebrewer10 replied to mjr88's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I'd second 1/4 for pigeons, with 1/4 you really can kill pigeons out to a fair distance, otherwise 1/2 is good for when they're further away. if you want something tighter than 1/4 but not as tight as 1/2, then Briley make a "light modified" choke that sits between 1/4 and 1/2, which I'd have thought would be a pretty cool deal for single barrel shooters, whatever their persuasion.... (I have some of their chokes in 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4, and they're not bloody bad at all....) DB -
zeroing sesion with 22 and 22.250
danebrewer10 replied to willum's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
gotta say, after reading your post, and no mention of the scope, I have to say, crap scope I'm afraid, I have a walther 3-9x56 on my air rifle and that's a beast to zero even at 25m, I can't imagine what it'd be like at longer ranges! I have no problems with my S&B hungarian 6x42 on my HMR, I do think scope quality is the most important thing on the rifle, and something people sometimes overlook....... try a different scope on it and I bet it'll be fine! do you have a mod on the rifle? if you do, it it properly alligned? if it's not then the bullets may be brushing the baffles of t -
hmm that's different! does this one use ball bearings in the bolt head for the lock up like the Merkel straight pull?

I'm just thinking aloud here, I have no idea, could it be that the firing pin spring is quite strong and the pin punched through a thin bath of peimers, the priming compond went off, pushed the pin back, the pin goes forward again the the main charge then pushes the pin back a second time, each time the pin punches a hole in the primer? probably not, but as others have said I 'll bet it's the primers..... Norma are usuaklly a very good brand....

Would I get an open FAC first time?
danebrewer10 replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
as a recreational shooter, if you were applying for a cartridge firearm, then I doubt it, but as it's an air rifle, then I think you would, I have a FAC .25 air rifle than I can use wherever pretty much, but any new land has to be checked put by my FEO before using my HMR on it.... -
fox's with shotgun?
danebrewer10 replied to pest hunter 151's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
yes absolutely, but read a previous post I made on cartridges I think would be suitable here http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/148213-shotgun-cartridges-for-foxes-cartridges-patterned/page__p__1498682#entry1498682 ATB DB -
sorry hoss, Gamebore make a 2" cartridge with 24g of shot in size 6 and 7! http://www.gamebore.com/page.php?id1=2&id2=3 the last cartridge in the "super game" section DB I don't understand how "if you use it how it's intended" then it's fine, ie, only putting 2 carts in the magazine, but surely if there's space for more then it's a sect firearm? It'd be like buying an 8 shot SA, but then saying, oh it's OK, i'll only be putting 2 carts in the mag.... Silly comparison maybe but something I can't get my head round..... the only thing is, what can a 31/2 chambered gun do that

don't bother with a proper lightforce replacement, I bet they'll charge the earth, just go down to maplin or some similar place and buy a variable resistor or dimmer switch and some heat shrink tubing and splice it in yourself!I'd think it'd be much cheaper! DB

not really, Yup I messed up on the first example, they are slightly different, but the .300WM and the .308 Win, both use a .308 calibre bullet, as do the .17 HMR and the .17 HM2 a better 6.5mm example would be the 6.5x55 swede, 6.5 grendel or 6.5 creedmoor, or for 7mm, 7x57, 7mm-08 or 7mm Rem Mag or even the 7mm rem ultra mag (you get the idea) , these rounds are very different, more different from each other than the .17 HMR and .17 HM2 are from each other, but I was just trying to demonstrate the principle, yes, albeit by exaggerating DB long and the short of the thread, I think
-
aye same here, I had to stipulate .17 HMR, it's like stating a 6.5mm calibre and getting the choice of a.25-06 or a 6.5x55 or a .308 cal and you getting the option of a .308win or a .300WM! perhaps a silly example, but not too far removed..... DB

no that's true, but I wanted an S&B, for me it was as I said about pride of ownership, not functionality, for me my rifle is both a tool and something I enjoy owning, shooting and looking at, likewise, I could have bought a CZ for half the price of an Anschuetz, but I didn't, as I wanted something a bit special, doubtless the CZ would have shot just as well, but I've shot a couple in .22LR and for me they just lack something in finish and finesse....., having said that they do and will go on for ever, but I think that's just rimfires for you! I can't see the point in the Mach2, it seems they created the HMR with the WMR case and thought, "hmmm I wonder what we can do with the .22LR"... I don't think it does anything the .22LR can't, it just does it a bit faster I think and with more wind drift.... go with the HMR.... as for the sound mod? yes it does have to be listed on your certificate that you will be using the rifle with a mod. DB

I guess this is the 6.5x55? you can't push lead as fast as jacketed bullets, even with a gas check, else the lead is too soft and it won't grip the rifling, it just skims a layer of lead off the outside of the bullet and deposits it in the barrel, so they'll be going quite slow I'd have thought, there's no reason you can't use them at longer range, people shoot 45-120, 45-70 at long range, the trajectory is like a rainbow, but people do it, but for "proper"use I'd just load up some more "standard rounds...

amazing/lucky shots on pigeons, anyone?
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
ha ha, we've all done that! first tine I ever shot a shotgun was at a tiny baby rabbit, can't have been more than 7 or 8m away, I missed that..... suffice to say it didn't stick around! just damn annoying when you have suck an easy bird, either a flushed pheasant of a woodie lazily floating down into the deeks that you miss it and it seems to have divine protection! -
amazing/lucky shots on pigeons, anyone?
danebrewer10 replied to danebrewer10's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
nice micky, I've heard of similar stories where people ave shot two rabbits with one shot from a .22LR, or there was one, I don't know whether it is actually trus or not, but some duke or high society guy in the 1800s, shot a pheasant and a salmon in the river behind it!, plausible, but I'm not sure whether the pellets would have made it far enough through the water.... -
HI all, I thought I might share this with you all, a while ago I had a bumper day on the pigeons on barley stubble, I managed 25 in 5 hours with only 6 shell deeks to start off with, they were still coming in after I had run out or cartridges! (I had only brought 74 with me.... bugger!), but I had a trick shot as well!, I nearly got a couple of left and rights though the second shot always seemed to have evaded me, only knocking a few feathers out, but I did manage two with one shot! there were two coming in together, fairly close, I aimed at the first 1/4 choke and 30gm of no 6, missed slight

the carts may be a bit slower or faster so consequently you may be hitting them with the edge of the pattern and not catching them right in the middle, otherwise get some big paper, I'd suggest two widths of wrapping paper taped together and pattern them, the cart/chokes/gun combo may not suit. also confidence I find plays a big part, if you don't believe in your equipment and aren't confident in it, then you won't do so well... .222 or .223 Which is best?
danebrewer10 replied to wanderinstar's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
the way I see it is that the .223 is a hot .222, I think it was based on the .222 mag? so it's faster, has more oomph, the .222 rifles will probably be cheaper because no one wants them, but I bet sourcing .223 ammo will be considerabvly easier, and you'll have a much better selection of various ammo, plus the .223 is small deer legal with appropriate bullets and energies, I don't know about the .222 but it may just scrape in 1000ft/lbs, someone who loads for it 'll have to tell you that DB and actually (yes I did look it up) the .222 and .223 both have the same bullet diameter of .224" -
aah well there's got to be a defender of europe on here! I have a S&B 6x42 on my HMR and I can honestly say it's the best scope I have had on a rifle, I can see as well, if not better in the dark with the scope than without, mine is the hungarian model, and though they're a bit more expensive than the Leupolds or other american glass, the quality is outstanding, plus I get the pride of ownership from owning an S&B that I personally wouldn't have got with a Leupold! though if you want good better best, then I think swarovski may pip them to the post, but not by much. (just going on
