I can remember the job I was on when the last one occurred . Some of the lads, standing on the scaffold, stared straight at it and as far as I know none of them have gone blind since, LOL.

he needs a new measuring type I think you'll find it's you that needs a measuring tape.

Fair Play To This Man, As I Could Not Do It..lol
neil cooney replied to Saluki246's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Fair play but it's no different to what any huntsman should be able to do when exercising hounds. The only difference is that a huntsman might have 4 times that amount. -
The great Irish comedian Niall Toibin once said "Ireland is an island 300 miles long and 150 miles thick." That IS only an island and with a small population of 4.5 million (they reckon there's more Irish in Liverpool) it's amazing the impact we've had on the rest of the world, good or bad, LOL.

One walled garden I know of was impenetrable by foxes as there was no ivy etc. growing on it and the keeper reared plenty of fowl in it. Then a tree blew over on the outside and lay up against the wall. The keeper was quick of the mark and had a snare on it straight away and if I remember correctly he had 7 or 8 foxes of it before cutting the tree up. You have to stay one step ahead when it comes to Mr Fox.

I remember that place well Fatman. Standing in the garden and the fox sticking his mask out of the ivy before running the top of the wall and jumping for it.

Cheers all. Why was alcohol invented ? To stop the Irish taking over the World.

Have to agree. What's also becoming common is to see live roosters dumped on country roads. A neighbour asked me a few days ago was I missing chickens as some cocks had wandered into his yard. It's a cowardly act. Another poultry keeper I do some vermin control for is a foreman on a large job and told me that the Polish workers give him 7 euro for a dead cock , feathers and all. They reckon they're much tastier than supermarket chicken and make a dish they call "Cock Soup."

You hit the nail on the head Stevo. ACV, garlic and bleach are all part of the day to day maintenance of a healthy flock. They're not cures and worming etc. must still be done. The bleach you used ? Is it just ordinary household bleach ?

IMO if you've never netted hares before I would certainly get some one who experienced to help you. If hares are driven on their own terms you'll be surprised how few beaters you'd need but if you want to drive hares where they don't want to go then dozens of beaters wont succeed. Also, depending on the country 200 yards of net might work in the right place when 1000 set badly wont. Boxes only IMO and ones made for the job also. Another reason to bring someone who's been there, done that is that not only are hares stressed easily but if handled badly a hare can cause serious injury to you.

Years ago I got a phonecall from a farmer who said he'd trapped a fox in a shed after he'd heard the commotion looked in the door and seen that all his hens were dead and the fox was still in it. I went straight away with the gun and thought all I had to do was go in and shoot the fox. Went in and no fox. The only exit was where one block had been left out for ventilation and that hole was over 7 feet up the wall. There was nothing for the fox to jump on first so it was from the ground straight out the hole. What's more there should have been 26 hens but there was 25. The fox with a hen in

Bacon In The Making ( Spoilt For Choice )
neil cooney replied to TWOTWOTHREE's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Happy pigs, they'll be tasty I bet. -
The cage bird lads use it but I've never heard of it used in poultry. Apple Cider Vinegar is widely used to regulate a birds digestive system and some say ACV does have some parasite preventing properties. Garlic in the water is also widely used to help combat parasites and it does work. Bleach is something I never used even when I had canaries, no reason, other than I'd be afraid it would kill friendly bacteria as well as harmful bacteria. JMHO.

Personally, I think he's proved a bloody good point. If I was lucky enough to breed such the pics would be shown that evening.

IF, God created mankind he must have been smoking some serious shit that day.

Griz, that because the lads who have been commenting haven't got a clue what they're talking about. When you see someone use the term "smashed" when describing a terrier it's time to switch off. Terriers are not made of glass so how can they get smashed. It's a macho term that falls straight into the anti's hands. Those who regularly worked otters with their terriers will tell you that they often bolted quicker than a fox and when he didn't bolt a smart baying nipping type was the perfect terrier. In fact, it was often the conditions that tested the terrier more so than the quarry itself ,

Bedlington Terrier?????i Dont Think So
neil cooney replied to jigsaw's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I don't doubt it Morton, as long as there's lads breeding terriers there'll always be the dreamers who read the history book and believed all the legends. IMO the same lads tend not to take their terrierwork serious and that's their business. JMHO. -
That aimed at me neil? Aimed at anyone who thinks it's macho to use such stupid terms. Also IMO I think it would be no harm for you to remove that video for reasons I'm not going to mention on here. Oh,and it was 1992 that Otter Hunting was eventually abolished in Eire.

Terriers get the odd mark on them from work, nowadays and in the past, but there's lads who've "heard" about terriers "smashed up" commenting on here. Keep it real lads and only comment if you were there and seen the hunt. Also, what idiot came up with the new terms of "smashed" and "gear" ?

Nice to see a pinemartin, around 50 miles from home. Seriously though, it's a joke that they're still releasing them. The spread of forestry has helped them enough without " those who think they know about the countryside" swelling their numbers. They're even being seen in large towns now. Because they're not recognised by most folk they often get mistaken for mink. One man I know who keeps a lot of chickens told a friend of mine he had trapped 35 mink (a non protected species) and had them in a freezer. When my friend seen them he recognised them as pinemartens (fully protected.). Think a

I think you mean spraint, LOL, sorry.

Nice trout BT, glad to see you put him back. He's quiet lean and will be a good bit heavier in a month or two. A couple of years ago I watched a fish of similar size all Winter and on my first cast of the year I caught him. He was long but lean and because he was deep hooked I killed him. Pity, he'd have been a 4 pounder a month or two later.

I see them most weeks and have seen five in one morning. I admire them as a predator but if they were still on the quarry list I wouldn't weep if I seen one accounted for. IMO they are up there with Seals in that they are a very wasteful animal. They don't always kill for food and if a river is clear and in good condition it's amazing how much fish they can actually kill and leave to rot. I've seen a 7 and a half pound brown trout (a fish of a lifetime) killed and left to the crows. I know it's weight and it was 7 1/2 on the scales with the bite taken out of the back of it's head. It's only
