A few of the last ones I made, two Oak tops and a kids antler one. None of my sticks will win any prizes, because I do not like them like a snooker cue. Some say it's because I cannot get the straight, But I know different. TC

I stripped and left for a few months then worked on it does hazel look better dried out then varnished without stripping bark of then Without a doubt, the variety in the bark is one of the things that makes hazel sticks. There are 14 sticks in the photo and each one is different and gives each stick a character of it's own. TC

With the bark taken off it is hard to tell. But if I was to lay money on it I would say hazel. TC

Personally I would get them in the green house. The chap I had the seeds off has his in a heated greenhouse under sodium lights 24hrs a day by May they were about 1.5" in diameter and over 2ft tall. The year I done mine he had one that was over 12lb. He grew for show and did not plant outside but grew them on in huge green house that would take around a hundred onions When I done mine I had a little paraffin heater going in the green house and bubble wrapped the windows of the green house. That said it was a very cold January and February and the heat just kept them ticking over. In all I -

I don't think there is a definitive age for a dog to retire. There are a lot of variables to take in to account. the amount of hard physical work the dog has done through it's life. The feeding and quality of care it has received, all count towards it's longevity. Like us they all grow old but some remain active a lot longer than others for various reasons. TC

I have the growing notes for the kelsie onion if anyone wants them? The first year I grew them, one reached 6lb and the average of the rest was 4lb. That said, all the seeds were from the same head, not thrown in to a barrel and you take pot luck what comes out. The point of growing Kelsie's is getting uniform shaped onions, weight does not really matter as long as the onions are a uniform shape and fairly large 3lb plus. but you can achieve that with Ailsa Craig. Following a link in another thread I came across this set of videos. There are seven in the series and well worth a watch. I used clip converter to download them to my pc now I can watch them when I like. Parts 4 5 and 6 are how to make a buffalo horn crook.
