  1. I do find it odd that when writing a book about training mink, that you add a couple of chapters about ferrets. I cannot work out what they would add to the book? Unless, it is to draw a parody of the simularities between the european polecat and the mink in the wild? The problem you have with the percived wisdom surrounding both the eu polecat and the mink is that both are thought to be untrainable, yet we now know that it is not the case, don't we! TC
  2. Will do mate I'm going have another run out tonight just on footy pitches again getting it run out and picked up nice and steady and quietly......I take my hat of to those who still use traditional nets I can imagine how hard and how much the must of practiced on getting the nets out.....Think it'll be a couple of seasons before I attempt the trad nets lol.....I'm likening my basket to much anyway I'm like a big kid at Xmas with a new toy lol You wait till your back starts aching. I know of one chap who has had to have a back operation as he used baskets every day and it takes it's toll
  3. One thing I will say, speed does not catch rabbits, stealth does. Better to take your time and set a net correctly, than to rush and balls it all up. No matter how quick you can set a net, you will never out run a rabbit, but you can outwit it. TC
  4. Surmising that you are using a 4" mesh The total number of meshes you have in a 4 yard net (12') rigged length @ 18 meshes deep is 972 (54m long x 18m deep). If the net was 15 meshes deep and rigged by halves (100% bag as they call it) it should have 1080 total number of meshes, (72ml x 15md) so your not that far out and the net should catch well enough. TC
  5. We got Offa's dyke, for all the good it does! Aye the buggers learnt to swim TC
  6. Everybody has a different view point on what constitutes a good collar, personally for me it's leather. From the feedback he has received for his collars SS collars are tops for what they are. Not my cup of tea, but plenty of people like them. If you want a collar that wil last, go for the SS collar if you want one that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and will last, go for a good leather collar. TC
  7. I binned what was left of our goose in the daughters dog yesterday. I had food poisoning the week before christmas and did not want to risk it. TC
  8. Have you tried pating them elsewhere, like word for example that would tell you if it is this site or a problem with your clipboard? TC
  9. With a quick set it does not really matter which method you use. As long as the mesh is held tight to the pole then you should not have any problems. What I would do is mark where you want to place the poles on the net by tying bits of string to the meshes top and bottom, so when you come to set it up it is ready for you. Just remember that with a 41/4 mesh there are 17 meshes to a yard so if you want your poles at six yard intervals then you multiply 17 x 6 then add your marker every 102 meshes. TC
  10. Ham freezes well cut a chunk off it wrap in foil, then in an airtight bag, if you can vacume pack all the better and stick it in the freezer. It will last 6 months no problem. Cut in half honey gazed ham ready to be frozen. TC
  11. Northerly wind are notorious for dying off as it gets dark tonight would be a fair oppertunity as the winds are decreasing and turning WNW enter the field on the eastern side and you will have a chance of picking off a few. TC
  12. One word of advice, when training a GWP as I am sure D&N will agree, You have to totally re-think your training strategy. It is no good trying to train them like a spaniel or a lab the dogs are meant to run big and that is what they want to do. Just because a dog is working 200 - 500 yards away from you does not mean that it cannot be under control. You have to learn to trust the dog, if you cannot do that, don't bother getting one cos it will just be a car crash looking for somewhere to happen. TC
  13. Now that is a very good find. An auction house in Nottingham with internet bidding.£££££££££££££££££££££ TC
  14. Terry, you have come a long way in a very short space of time. You can see by the way the slack is billowed in the nets that the wind was not right. But with a little thought and some practice you have caught rabbits, when most who blindly rush in would not have. I have said it before and will probably say it again, "long netting after dark is a thinking mans sport." When you can winkle a few rabbits out of a drop when the elements are against you, it shows that you think about each drop and the very importent approach to that drop to make the best of any advantage that is available. 15. Looks quite deep, the wind is just starting here. http://magicseaweed.com/North-Atlantic-Surf-Chart/2/?chartType=PRATE#?chartType=PRATE&_suid=13880864773350879712045292851 TC
  16. I have very few regrets during my hunting life. The one that I do have that sticks out in my mind is that I never heard about the GWP's earier in my life. What a wonderfull breed of dog it is, I honestly think in the right hands there is very little that this dog can not do. If I was limited to one dog to cover many disiplines it would be the GWP every time. TC
  17. Use field craft, and never go ferreting with people with verbal diarrhea. Basically the same as I do now. TC
  18. Johnny when I seen the first photo of the pups that dog jumped out at me, don't know why it just screamed quality. I tell you it was a hard decision, but as I would not be able to do the dog justice these days, I took the right option, I feel anyway. Perhaps if I had seen them in the flesh as you did my resolve would have weakened. TC
  19. When I first seen the advert for this litter I was sorely tempted even though I had made my mind up "no more running dogs." I really had to keep a check on my self not to give in to common sense. I had a feeling these dogs would make good working dogs. It does look that with the right handling they will make the grade. TC
  20. The answer to your question, is one more than you need. TC
  21. One of the drawbacks of a fixed netting system I am afraid, you will need a basket to put it in. One of lifelong cumbrians plastic tubs would be ideal. You could try a paper boys bag or simular till you find something suitable. Edited to add: LC made a video not so long ago showing how he picks up and shoots nets with his baskets, that would give you a better understanding. I will have a look if I can find it. TC
  22. I have never found the sewn joint to snag but I do taper the ends. Another factor is that a single splice can come apart, not when it is being pulled tight but when gentle pressure is applied to the join. TC
  23. I don't splice anymore, too much like hard work with nylon lines, I just sew the lines together 3 minutes tops for each join. I have one net here that is over 25 years old and the join is just as solid as the day it was made. TC
  24. I would not know where to start on a phone. TC
