177 or 22 for hunting
Phantom replied to paulredtop's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Hey Paul,:stupid: There is an old addage that says .177 for Feather and .22 for Fur But as Bill above mentions, its all down to where you put the shot, not the calibre of pellet or gun. So if you have a preference for .177, thats a good choice either feather or fur will fall (allways go for Brain Shots by the way, commonly called head shots, but allways means brain) If you have a preference for .22, then thats a good choice for either feathur or fur (as above) If you have a preference for .20 or .25 then thats a good choice....... My advice for any newbie to hunting is alw -
Just been playing with chairgun pro, and using the data supplied by Norica for the 56, chairgun calculates that the power in the .177 is a tad over 6.55 ft/lbs. Phantom

Hi again Andrew, From what I have read on the Norica 56; it has a power of about 6ft/lbs so its an ideal power for a youngster The reviews I've read state that it is prone to rusting, but keep a thin film of oil on it and that should help with that minor fault. The trigger may be a bit heavy, one review described it as a .308 trigger pull so to help with that, I would suggest a polish and re-grease of the mating surfaces of the mechanism. The reviews have also stated its an ideal ratting tool (but very loud for its power) and accuracy out to 20 yards is very acceptable. So yo

For cleaning out the barrel, you can either buy a kit to do so (you can get some that have different heads, for .177, .22 and 12 guage and just about everything in between) Or you can do it the way I just cleaned mine (far cheaper). I tore up a baby wipe put a strong piece of thread down the barrel, hooked the wipe into a loop at the end then pulled it through a couple of times. Then I pinched some of my lads 'filter tips' from his fag making kit and put them in the barrel and pushed them through a couple of times with some thin canes, first they came out gray/black then when the next

TIP for the meeting: Dress Smart casual, not combat ready. Take your insurance details and make a point of showing them to him. Ask him questions, walk around with him. Be polite and professional call him Sir until he says 'use my first name'. Leave the permission form until after he says you can shoot; then say to him that "to make my insurance valid on your land will you please sign this permission document; its just a formality." And best of luck. Phantom

Excellent shooting Gents I was gonna say same as Stealthy about the image code, but I'm a bit slow today and thought I'd let the old guy get there first Phantom

Hi there Shay. :11: Parcel arrived today buddy Many thanks Phantom

I noticed the two lines Bill while I was studying the larger image I took. The pellet is right under the facsia of the muscle, can you imagine the pain it must have been in? It must have been agonising. It could have even paralysed the bunny if it had gotton on top of the spine. B d Phantom

Looks like the 'Fast fire 10' or Rapid 10 or something. Terry Doe did a review on video once. Bit like a pump action to cock and load. Its a PCP if I remember? Phantom

Hi gents, I'm pretty sure the pellet in its back came from the tennants young lad. I tried to tell him how to shoot properly and have respect for the quarry, but he wouldn't listen "if it bleeds its a target" I remember him saying one day C T! I was talking to a mate of mine today about the bunny draggin the kit down, I had assumed it had gotten dragged down by the older one because the tunnle was so tight and it couldn't shake it from its back legs. My mate said the same as you about it being its parent. I hadn't actually thought of that Colin also suggested that the lump w

They must be more intelligent than me, cuz I've never managed to shoot one, little gets! I posted something similar with a Crow making a hook to fish for food a fair bit back. Phantom

I used to use 4 to 6 mag for all shooting, Now though, During the day I use 9x and on a night when light is falling, I'll use 3 mag or 4 mag then crank it up to max when I have my quarry sighted. When zero'ing, it has to be the highest mag for my own prefereance Phantom

21_4_10 Got to my permission about 17:30 today with the intention of setting up and sniping along the fence seperating the paddock and the old ladies orchard and gardens. As I arrived half a dozen cotton tails gave it legs to the safety of the warrens, but as yesterday one remained out, right me thinks, this one is only about 50 yards from me and I'm gonna break my own rule here and stick a pellet in a bunny before I put one in the paper. It was just too good of an opportunity not to take. So I unslipped the rifle, pulled back the bolt and slipped in a 16grain FX pellet and returned th

I am sorry for the way you interpreted my response to your first kill post; But I will always stand by what I say. So before you 'fly off the handle' again, please read the following: My 1st reply to your first post was nothing like you mention above it was actually this: It was not as you said "Giving you shit" at all It was merely a piece of Constructive Criticisim And I indeed stand by what I said when you said: You then went on to say : I wasn't thinking (and I doubt anyone else was) that the rabbit will go to waste I was thinking about the suffe -
Hi Aaron, That is as you say interesting Funnily enough I was in a situation where I didn't use a net over my rifle and I moved for 20 or thirty yards in plain sight of a bunny and although it was weary it didnt bolt. The rifle was pointing down in my right hand. As soon as I (very slowly) began to raise the rifle, the black straight line of the barrel and silencer crossed my front, thumper legged it to safety It wasnt a case of it caught the flash from the light reflecting off the objective as the sun was way over to my left and behind me. SS1 Where did you get the DPM overall from? I could do with an extra layer or two in the cold. I also like the idea of getting that cheeky young fox close enough to give it a slap on the chops and a bollocking for nicking my kills, thats two the little git owes me now  Phantom

Thanks buddy Aaron and Andy, Heres the method as taught on Discovery Channel You dont need the frame and hooks, I did it with just my hands Phantom -
I find it depends on how threatened they feel; just to complicate things for you buddy On the Paddock they come out on an evening and a morning, at the other side of the paddock, they lay out in the sun most of the day because they can see any approach by anyone. The cemy, they like to come out in the new part (thats visited by people all day) only at night/evening and early morning, but the end of the old section, they will stay out all day because people dont go up there often. On the embankments next to the flyover and the field next to that they are out 24 hours (until I find

Your not that far out there Andy The gun as you say is telling you what pressure the gun is at inside its air cylinder. The pump is measuring what the pressure is in the pump and hose line. I would run with whats in the gun rather than whats in the hose. Eventually they will equalize (or thats my interpretation of the physics of it). Find out though what pressure your gun gives the most consistant shots with. In my case 185 bar is the most pressure I fill it to even thought the air cylinder will take up to 300 bar (for safety reasons) and the manufacturers say 200 bar is the max

Hi Stroller, Nice shot, you'll allways remember your 1st Now to my usual reccomendation and honestly; I'm not having a go as some people seem to think sometimes Have a few hours with paper targets buddy until you are sure of the feel of the gun and your confidence will then override your nerves We've all been there, with the nerves When ever I go out, be it at the cemetery or the paddock, I allways shoot at least five (usually more) into paper targets before I take shots at quarry. Knowing that I can put 5 shots or more into the bulls eye at 30 yards gives me the c

Phantom replied to Phantom's topic in Airgun Hunting
Thanks Guy's PPP, alas sadly it was one of those very rare occasions that it wasn't a lights out switch off that most hunters strive to achieve. However; The damage caused to the front of the brain was suffice to make sure it couldn't run anywhere and it took me less than 5 seconds to get to it and finish the job manually. I prefere to take standing shots with my springer and shoot the S200 from the pod as I find the bikini stock awkward to hold at the front, where as the springer is a superb fit in my hands when standing. Anybody used prometheus pellets 177
Phantom replied to iguanaman2442's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The plastic skirts tend to leave a thready residue in the bore of the barrel, not good for accuracy I tried the .177's in my co2 and air pistols never again Tried the .22 in my PCP and it was the only pellet to penetrate the steel of my backstop the hard nose worked a treat on the steel Would I try them on live quarry, way too inaccurate. The alloy pellets though, they appear to be much better Phantom -
BASA is the one I'm with they were very slow getting it out to me, so I got 3 months free cover effectively Only needed it so I could enhance my prospects of gaining permission. It looked more professional when I included the ref number on my emails and permission forms so they could take a copy. I know I'm extremely unlikely to (but won't say "will never") have a reason to fall back on insurance. To me its just a formality (but could be needed one day). Pay by annual direct debit and its something like 17 quid Phantom
