i THINK theres a season on unenclosed land but i might be wrong.

As with alot of things i dont feel its a simple yes or no answer.I have shot Hares with various guns on land where i couldnt hunt them using other methods. I wouldnt feel the need to kill a hare where dogs or a B.O.P. could be used.I dont however feel its a grey area,im a person who goes hunting with dogs, guns are just something to play around with, not something i could ever get any real enjoyment from.Another person could feel the opposite to how i do,it just depends on what we like.I have mates who have gone from working dogs fairly regularly to spending alot of time with guns.I prefer to w

I hate having rats near my garden, thankfully theres no sign of any this year...yet. I havent had a big rat all year, not sure why.....we had a few big uns last year.

I ve been beagling once or twice, I found it very hard work,[ my legs were ageing, even then], I've allways found it curious that coursing got such a bad press from the anti's, yet beagling was hardly ever mentioned, probably because most anti's conception of coursing was formed by organised grey hound coursing where the, admittedly small amount of kills ,can often be seen by the crowd attending, whereas very few, if any of the spectators are usually present when the beagles finally run their quarry down. It could be argued that coursing is more humane than beagling, because in a course a har

Ive shot a hare with an air-rifle,another with a shotgun and about twenty or so with a rimmy.I dont see a problem with it but from a sport point of view, pre ban off-course,coursing or my personal favorite hunting sport Beagling was a far better use of the superb athlete the Brown Hare.

sounds like you had a good night i used to really enjoy rat shooting when i first started doing it.
-
the first of many for you i hope yeah its a young rat but that dont matter, some of the more testing shots ive pulled off have been on small rats, smaller target after all. every year i get a few rats around my garden after the crops have come down but i rarely shoot them.i like ratting but near my house is too close for comfort so the Fenn traps are brought out

we had a couple more tonight

Out again with Half and Half.

Even a gutted rabbit may give your dogs worms especially if fed regularly. When i was catching good numbers of rabbits i generally froze them whole for a few weeks and then fed the complete rabbit raw with its guts,jacket......everything.My dogs are kennelled so the bits of fur etc that might be left over isnt a problem.I used to spend time gutting and skinning rabbits before freezing but now i dont bother. Its a very easy way to feed my dogs, cat and ferrets but it seems to do them no harm. They get fish once a week aswell and ive stopped messing about with them and just give them to the dogs pre

There will be very few hunting types that havent been chased by livestock at sometime.Ive had a cow press me up against a wall twice at night and it was a bit worrying,i had to drop the gun in the shit so i could get out of it.It only lasted a few seconds both times and dairy cattle are well mannered beasts that can be moved by a gentle push. The worst was a night lamping with lurchers in the northumberland when a bull we didnt know was in a big field went absolutely mental. We let go off the dogs and luckily it took off after them instead of us.We jumped a dry stone wall abnd got the dogs bac

i saw this story today,a blurry pic at arms length well ive seen fishing pics the same so why not
-
just read the link, what a shame that probably the biggest rat ever killed in Britain was dumped and eaten by a fox at least it helps sell newspapers.
-
I saw this headline on the front page of the sun today. The picture inside was blurry and taken at arms length.Im always sceptical of such pics in any mag/paper etc.Hold a fish for example towards a camera and it looks massive. The guy says he shoots rats twice a week,a 30 inch rat is a monster and most people would have it photographed next to a tape measure.Someone from the mammal society and the rspca said it was probably a foreign species.Someone else in the area said they had seen rats the size of a cat but not that big ive killed a few rats and have never killed one as big as a cat....now

couple more out with half and half

Nice bag lads Pointer mate, half and half will be sending you a bill for them pellets have you seen the price of em nowadays if they go up another 10p a tin he will be packing airgunning in and getting a terrier Maybe its about time Air Arms sponsored us for the amount of critters that have died due to their pellets over the last few years We only got ten rats with the dogs on sunday mate, mind that farm the other night is crying out for a team of dogs.I nearly start crying when we pick up the bodies from around the water troughs as its a good dog spot. wont be long untill

that pictures naff i was rushing about and forgot my phone/camera and the tin of pellets. that farm will be visited regularly with dogs and guns over the next month.then a few other spots should yield a few.
-
No need to be sorry Phantom, anybody on here could easily shoot as many rats as what i do.Ive shot a couple tonight,it just fills in the odd night.I certainly dont consider myself a serious airgunner or a good shot. and yes i probably would enjoy watching your kitten catching moths more than i do shooting rats.
-
We cant all be trophy winning marksman Theres nothing to learn about ratting with airguns..........because its really fecking easy to do,simple as that. Its fun but thats it,nothing to get excited about..........thats what working dogs are for.Proper sport With rats all you need are places with a rat problem, nothing more and you need a few places because you might soon get them under control. It wouldnt bother me in the slightest if i never shot another rat, rabbit or pigeon ever again. Its becoming seriously boring.........roll on winter for some hunting

Hunting regularly can be an expensive sport, the few seasons before last i was spending an average of 60 pound a week on diesel, that was three trips rabbiting with lurchers,a couple of nights ratting, maybe a nights sea fishing plus anything else that crops up.Some weeks cost more as at that time i was lamping the lurcher as much as possible plus the daytime stuff. Then theres the cost of gear, the wear on tear on a 4 x 4,vet bills etc etc. It had to stop(not the hunting just the expense) and i had to ask the lads i was hunting with to chip in or with alot of what i do ive found lads who i can t

hi davy, i very rarely use bait and when i have i cant say for sure that the rats i shot wouldnt have been wandering around the area anyway but i have shot rats over cat food and as i go sea fishing i nearly always have mackeral around that i just stick in a blender and make into a smelly mash.sometimes we just put some corn down.i find bait of more use when numbers are down and im trying to lure whats left out of places where i cant shoot them into somewhere that i can,if rats are running around all over then i can be fairly confident of a good session whatever i do. i have in the past shot
-
all you can do is turn up and shoot whats there on the night.......better than staying in watching the telly, and rats will soon breed their numbers up again Thats the same lamp ive always used for my shooting and untill last season all my lamping with the lurcher aswell.Ive never used it for NV shooting but i have the IR filter for the odd occasion when i go out with NV binoculars. its time i got a new camcorder so i might end up filming a bit of shooting this winter.

thanks for that,i like the pellets i use but would experiment with something new if i thought it would cause more damage whilst retaining accuracy. ill count a rat if i can see it lying dead but cant get it out and ill count the ones that were seen clearly very dead but have been dragged away by other rats but i dont count those that i cant confirm as dead no matter if im confident its been hit.its just how i do it,i admit im a bit weird over things like that and a good nights shooting for me can be soured by a bad body count at the end.thinking ive shot a dozen rats and only putting half

good pics there thats some shooting, ive killed my share of rats and sometimes their heads are left in a mess but i cant recall a time when ive shot half a big rats head off.the next time you do it can you pm me a picture even if you dont want to put it on the net for obvious reasons as thats the kind of pellet i want to be using.myself and half and half use AA diabolo fields but we arent doing that amount of damage though we still get quick kills most of the time. on another note my tally for last year says i killed 798 rats with a gun or the dogs.i must have shot at least another 200 ra
