First Shoot day on the Pheasants
pointer replied to Dave C's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
nice one Dave and Ferns looking well. . -
Hi phantom I'm sure coypu are still around in some areas I'd never say otherwise.I just think the sun story was a load of bollocks. I haven't read all the mail story but I'd be suprised if any ratting lads could mistake a coypu for a brown rat when its infront of them and I'm sceptical of any stories that have to include pics from abroad rather than the body of something killed in britain, after all that's what the story is about. Few ratting men wouldnt photograph such things and I just don't believe that anybody would throw away the body but ring a newspaper, but I could be wrong. The pic

I'm off out to shoot a few in an hour,I've been feeling sickly all week and really don't feel like dragging my arse off the settee lol
-
Hi Davy, good to see your still bagging the rodents.
-
It was a nonsense story if I remember right with no body as evidence.people are often freaked out by rats even some hunting folk and silly stories make good headlines. There have been enough big rat comps and threads on hunting forums to tell us that above average sized rats are rare.rats don't live very long so don't get chance to grow all that big.I think anyone who believes that sun story about a two and a half foot wild rat is a fecking idiot but id like to be proven wrong and would love to run into such a beast.even given the best of grub a rat would get bulky but not much longer,a dwarf

all you need is a lamp,i prefer an amber filter but shot hundreds of rats by holding a million cp lazerlite beside my rifle before i invested in a lamp mount, filter and dimmer.Thinking about it i shot more rats when i started shooting eight years ago than i do now. it can be good fun if your getting into numbers, once theres less rats to be had id rather just mess about getting a few with the dogs. the problem with rat shooting is you need an awfull lot of permission to keep doing it regularly, killing good numbers of them when youve found a good place is easy, often ridiculously easy compar
-
I used to mess about skinning them etc but after a while I just froze them for a couple of weeks and fed whole, the dogs ate the lot and all that was left was the odd tuft of fur.my cats were fed the same.

I walked upto a few hares today whilst out with hounds, they often sit tight and would be extremely easy to shoot. Your young and like many, including myself at your age,you want to catch stuff but you may decide in time that some things are best left either altogether or only taken at certain times of the year.

Have you lost interest in hunting or has the type of hunting you do lost it's appeal a little? There is a difference, sometimes things get repetitive and it's time to try something new.

Let's face it the airgun section has always come alive in the summer. As for those with the kill counts i usually think I wouldn't admit to doing so little hunting lol For me summer is a time for some ratting, minkhunting and as much fishing as possible.August will soon be here and then its back to hounds and lurchers and a bit with guns.i think if your out doing enough in the season you can let most stuff breed for four months.

I wouldn't put ferrets in the Walls where we go,they could end up anywhere,go missing but come back at some point to kill the hens, pheasants that run round most spots I go ratting on. I love lamping rats and whilst half an hour out usually only gets us 3-6 rats(sometimes less ) it's good fun,but once numbers build up it's air rifle job. Traps work but on most places we go on a dozen or sometimes far more can be shot in an hour or two,it would take a good number of fenn traps to do that. All this dosent help someone wanting them for dogs though and I wish I could get them all with the mutts

I'm assuming those that wouldn't shoot a young rabbit wouldn't shoot a female rabbit that might have young to ground? Or am I missing something about summer hunting
-
Good going lads
-
The main reason I don't mind taking summer rabbits is because mixy always came and wiped out far more than we did and because we were walking or driving a 4x4 around thousands of acres of fells we weren't going to wipe them all out.viruses and the bad weather caused havoc to the poulation over the last couple of seasons aswell.I think as long as people see summer hunting for what it is then it's ok.the first year I got an air rifle i went out that summer on the reedy edges of moorland and took good numbers on an evening.I thought I was pretty good untill I tried shooting the same land in the w

I've killed my share of young rabbits with dogs and guns so I'm not saying someone else shouldn't do it but I think the whole idea that we do it all for pest control is a bit far fetched. Soon,as has happened in past summers, this section will be flooded by shooters posting about killing baby rabbits.many will defend it by saying they are carrying out control to keep permission, save crops etc and they might be.BUT let's be honest come winter these same lads don't seem to be out as much which either means they killed there quarry early on or they prefer a nice summers evening on dumb critters r

She is my dog,the only gwp lurcher I have now and I've never bred them. I have a pure gwp which also goes ratting, very handy dogs to have around especially when hunting on rivers, deepish mud or when the cover is high etc
-
Yeah she's a gwp cross, wouldn't want to go ratting without her.
-
Looks like you still enjoy your rat shooting davy. It's been a good year for me so far on the rats, I hope it continues but getting a good supply of rats regularly all year can be hard.
-
If you use the right hose it won't melt and then u can cut the metal pipe from the exhaust to just a few inches.
-
That looks heavy, won't the solid tubing make smoking out a tight spot difficult.it wouldn't work well in alot of places Ive used a smoker but your venues may be different. Hope it works for you though mate

Not a bad effort I suppose considering I wasn't there to help LOL -
Some of the best hunts I've seen have resulted in the fox getting away.

Good stuff

That's right, whenever ratting is mentioned too many people come on saying just dig them out but usually that's because all they do is a few days around the pens and gamecrop where big numbers can be took.it's a different game altogether around buildings with calf, pig and poultry pens.I'm out a few nights a week ratting and even if I go in a barn and see a dozen rats the dogs will only take a couple before the rest feck off and after a while they get wise and it generally becomes a shooting job to gets what's left.
