Strong dog zini, ive had a couple of half decant terriers and plenty of crap uns but even the better ones certainly had problems with some foxes,or at least it wasnt always easy for them. how many fox has it worked?
-
Good bit of pest control there Mark,I'm sure plenty of lads would jump at the chance of helping you out.
-
Get some pics up Zini, sounds a nice terrier. I started out with terriers and still do a bit with them and lurchers.
-
I follow hounds, hunting rats and rabbits or a drag within the law off-course.

Nah,been there done that.id rather take the dogs out and get one rat than shoot a hundred.that's the honest truth of it. If someone needed a hand sorting out a rat problem I'd happily help them out untill the job was done but the way I see it is there's lads who enjoy shooting rats as their main sport so let them do it while I watch Eastenders at home. I was out shooting in august with half and half on my permission and just couldn't be bothered with it.the bubble had burst and I've only shot a few rats since. For the record I spend more time out hunting than ever before,I'm having th

I certainly wasn't knocking rat shooting in anyway.there's nothing wrong with enjoying the easier hunting sports. My rabbit shooting has been very limited.apart from easy shots at night or out of a car window and early season on the dales I haven't done any. I would happily go shooting rats with anyone but I know I'd look rubbish out with you lads on the rabbits or crows etc,but that's my point............I think ratting comes down to what numbers are on a place over any kind of skill on the shooters part.I know I'm a crap shot yet I'm a competent fairly successfully rat shooter. Good

The hard part is getting permission on farms with enough rats, after that I've found the actual shooting to be straight forward.if others want to mock me for saying that then that's their right,it won't bother me. Our lass goes ratting but dosent know the first thing about hunting as such. I rarely shoot rats now as it lost it's appeal for me but I've done enough over the last eight years to feel I know the score and can voice an opinion even if it goes against the grain and upsets some. No need to take anybody out I'll give a quick lesson.get a rat in the crosshairs and pull the trigger.

I'll be happy to teach anybody everything I know about shooting rats,it will take about five minutes,if they wanted to learn about ratting with dogs that will take a lot longer,at least fifteen minutes lol I'll agree it's good fun but it ain't like other hunting sports that can take time to get to grips with.

Is that all you got.shame on you.

Just call round anytime

I had the same problem until I bought a big chest freezer for the garage, its stood beside the rat sized stretching rack I had built. Well you have to talk it up to farmers don't you, otherwise they think your not taking it serious.

I reckon half and half is just using the same dead bodies over and over again.we weren't getting many and now that I haven't been shooting with him for a while all of a sudden he is back getting good numbers again.............something just ain't right And he always seems to retrieve a good percentage of the rats he shoots which as anybody who reads this section knows just isn't possible..........it just makes no sense lol I reckon he knew I'd discover his fraudulent methods and that's why he never invites me out anymore.
-
No,and as they are mainly running around the slurry pit the body count might not look too good.I can't even look over there because the dogs are straight in it once they see a rat.
-
Get that place sorted then you can do me a favour and shoot my rats to keep the farmer happy

i was only messing with u i know mate i just wanted to make clear to everyone that i know that its neck and some vertebrae may have broken, but in saying that i feel confident that when it was alive this was still the biggest rat a dog of mine has ever taken........ i wish id photographed it the other way round aswell as i thought at the time its head was an unusual shape for a rat.infact maybe i should have got the right pic and got it in the papers and news
-
another one i saw caught by hedgehunter27 dog.sadly the picture isnt as clear as it looked when we laid it out.the tip of the tail just blends in with the cow shit covered concrete but when the pic was blown up the tail can be clearly seen ending on 19 inch as we knew it was,but in the pic below it goes back to looking like it ends a bit before. another rat that was caught in the middle of a barn where they normally get away.
-
No but as it was shook by a 70 pound GWP its neck would have broken, still a big rat. This photo has been on various forums and inevitably some will think its been messed with,id be the same if i saw it.I know thats how it was retrieved to me by my dog.Its head seemed oddly shaped, and the rats teeth were overgrown.Off-course there will have been some stretch after the dog mullered it. The bottom rat was quickly taken off the dog as there was a comp running and wouldnt have been included if the other dogs pulled it in half
-
the biggest two i had last year, both killed by a dog.........i didnt see the biggest being killed but it must have been a bit slow as it was taken in my own garden in thick cover, the other was taken by a terrier in a dairy byer and it too was slow to move when the lights came on.In my experience the bigger rats tend to be slow and easily caught.
-
Its not airbrushed, just put closer to the camera.I've seen it done loads of times with fish.the give away is often the extended arm of the guy holding it lol Good sized rat Davy,we get a fair few that size, for some reason getting them over 19 inch is rare for us.
-
I consider anything 19 inch and over to be a big rat,I've only caught a few in years of ratting.30 inch in Britain......,,,I just don't believe it but would love to see one.
-
Not this Bollocks again If anyone got a big rat it's easy to stick it next to a tape measure, but that rarely happens.Yet I keep hearing about big rats. I suppose it sells newspapers and scares housewives lol
-
Thanks for the tip phantom but That book was written in 1858 not sure it would have much relevance in 2010

We have all heard the statistics regarding how rats can breed. I struggle to find enough rats to hunt,if ratting was the only hunting I did,id not leave the house much lol
