  1. I've been happy enough with my Harris for the last few weeks, in the future maybe I will move onto a goshawk or something else.BUT I hope I never become one of those falconers that has owned a Harris for a season then slags them off whilst doing F**k all with their Gos etc. I've spoken to and seen too much stuff written on forums by people who are doing very little with their "superior" species. I realise goshawks are faster etc etc than a Harris but you still have to get them out hunting. I spoke to a golden eagle owner and bird of prey breeder last year that was almost making out that hares

It was a mix off things I think. The biggest factor was not having any experience of keeping or flying a hawk. That meant I was occasionally too cautious to let it fly free sometimes due to wind,or just being worried. She dosent like dogs, hated mine at first, but is slowly getting better. He pointed and flushed a pheasant for her last week and the next day she stayed closer to him.The seasons over so the chance to get her more flights over the dog are gone for now. Quarry has been scarce, rabbit numbers have been very low and without a dog to find what is there we struggled. I also didn't get o

Good flights are what we all want to see and numbers taken aren't the most important thing but I don't think it's an issue that can be ignored either. I know that although I enjoyed my half season with my first hawk I didn't get it enough opportunities to regularly catch stuff.

My Harris only took ten head, she took her first rabbit on the 5th of Jan. I feel the reason for my own lack of success was getting a young hawk at the end of November when I had no hands on experience of flying a bird of prey. This has also been a bad year for rabbit numbers. My hawk has only recently been willing to stay in the same field as a dog which meant far less opportunities for her than one positioned above a pointer would have. I should have done more ferreting but it's never been my preferred way to hunt even when I had lurchers. For the first month I had her I was learning the bas
  5. I think the original name was Dougal but I'm not bothered either way lol
  6. That gun looks like Dougal off the Magic Roundabout.
  7. If I had a choice going out of Hartlepool I'd pick the Famous or Ali-cat.Both catamarans with loads of space and very comfortable to fish off. However like alot of charter boats they can be fully booked and it can be hard to get on especially at short notice. Look on the NESA forum for catch reports etc. If your wanting a cheap day out fishing ground where you can still catch canny fish then the Baccanalia takes some beating at 20 quid a day.
  8. So how did the shooting go?
  9. If there's loads of them you don't need to bother thinking about baiting them out, they must have ample food sources so I'd just go for it.
  10. I've followed this thread with interest especially as I've worked GWP lurchers for a decade and own a pure GWP. Everybody has an opinion of what the best type of hunting dog is,I have mine but that's just because what I like suits me and I like the way they hunt.
  11. Another good days ratting.well done.
  12. Good going Moll and Millet.I bet it was a good day out,im a bit jealous all I've done this weekend is get soaked to the skin up in Scotland following hounds lol.
  13. just a few pics of Dougie and his sister Minnie(the choc/white)
  14. I've had good days out with Dougie and his sister Minnie.
  15. I wouldn't care too much about being slated on an Internet forum. I live in co.durham aswell.
  16. Smiles 40 asked me to put this pic of his dog up I like that dog
  17. Some days we don't find many rabbits sat out and as we don't use ferrets the walls come in handy.
  18. Sorry you wanted advice lol You can hold a lamp of some kind alongside your gun and shoot the rats. It is easier if the lamp is mounted to the gun and I like an amber filter on,red as a second choice.rats are active critters at night and I haven't done much baiting out as often it's obvious what they are eating and what route they take so it's just a case of flicking the lamp on to see what's about. Just have a go you'll soon be shooting rats if they are about. If its just a couple of rats using a route only occasionally I don't bother waiting to shoot them as its not worth the effort for th
  19. People have been shooting without NV for ages.NV being a fairly new bit of technology for the average airgunner. However it seems that it is now seen as essential kit for many ratters I meet. I'm the same with fishing,I've invested over a grand in gear over the last year and if I'm honest it probably wont help me catch more, but it's good to have the set up and stuff you want.
  20. a few friends have got together and had a day out with a number of dogs.theres no harm in that. i must admit that sometimes i go hunting when there are too many dogs about, occasionally ive gone out with someone who brings a terrier and all it does is flush rabbits my lurcher has found and is trying to take from the seat but theres a place for just having a walk out with a mate.as for those that think it unsporting i bet if the dogs in this thread had been split up and hunted alone alot more rabbits would have fallen.
  21. Looks like Fern is earning her keep mate.
