  1. Theres another couple of weeks left with hounds but there might be a few call-outs and the rabbiting will stop at the end of the month. Then for me ill be back out fishing once or twice a week plus the minkhounds will start being excercised again towards the end of April. Numbers are down but ratting never stops.
  2. i always shoot both eyes open
  3. nice dog keeps.i liked your russell the times i saw it hunting about and Bear was always a good looking terrier. ive had a few plummer crosses over the years and have seen a few more owned by others the most recant being last month down in south wales.i think for the lads i know its enough to have terriers bred down from dogs they had and were happy with.they might not be plummers, they are just terriers.simple as that really.for some breed purity isnt an issue and if i get a pup in its enough to know i worked its parent and granparent. now it could be said why bother with plummers at a
  4. cheers davey. ive been getting a few lately but its been cold and to be honest i dont find shooting in cold or wet conditions much fun.ill walk all day following lurchers or hounds in all weather but im a soft shooter
  5. nice one. i went to two farms yesterday that my mate has just got where we caught a dozen rats with the dogs after lifting some bales up but its begging to be shot over with air-rifles.
  6. as air-rifle shooting should be about shooting a stationary animal then id go for a type of dog thats used for that sort of thing.the distances might be alot shorter but shooting an air-rifle or say a .22 bullet gun is similar.the dog work is the same where rabbits and birds are concerned anyway. therefore id choose a hpr sort.......but many dogs could be trained to stay at heel or kept in the down position untill called forward,or used from a hide. ive only done a small amount of shooting using my gwp with an airgun but im sure he would have been able to work well enough.
  7. your a lucky fella lacey.well done.
  8. goldfinch,im glad your ok mate. i bet it was a good day out lads,id rather be out following hounds than doing anything else.
  9. id much rather catch rats at night with dogs but guns are usually far more effective.you can pick them off all night long if you wanted to. plus alot of rats will never give dogs a chance of catching them due to where they live. on the estate where myself and half and half have been going we do what we can with the dogs around the release pens, game crops etc but weve been shooting them most weeks at other spots where only the dumbest rodents would get snapped up,they would see the dogs a mile off. good going dillan, ratting is great fun with dog or gun
  10. only the luckiest of people are able to take rats in number REGULARLY.for the likes of me its a case of getting what i can when i can and ill turn out for one rat.they all add up. had another four tonight out with Dave C.
  11. the dogs an idiot:clapper: a mate of mine has just got a terrier pup and thought he might like ratting but had never tried it.i had said he could come out with me when it was old enough but he asked if he could just tag along untill then which makes sense. anyway i didnt have long to mess about tonight but we soon had three with the dogs followed by three with the gun and back home within the hour. i think he enjoyed himself
  12. everything Alfie gets hold off ends up mangled
  13. i wanted to do some ratting with the dogs tonight and it turned out to be worth the trip.some crap had been moved about leaving a number of rats sheltering under old bales and boards.the dogs had eight before i got the gun out and started shooting. as i was putting the gun away i looked up the farmyard to see rats scuttling around a big open drain so i moved the car into a nice shooting position and shot six more.unfortunately these fell into the drain.i would have stopped longer but i didnt want to get caught in the snow even if i do drive a 4 x 4.
  14. Holy shit! This is rat hunters heaven!! I've never seen a single rat on my permission, although I know a pheasant farm where I think they have lots...may give them a call.. Keep going lads Jack mate if you can get on a pheasant rearing farm you might hit the big time.from what ive heard and seen pics on these forums they can hold alot of rats.
  15. people will always knock others, look at the threads about coursing dogs on here and all the arguing that gets done. chipper has been kind enough to take me out rabbiting and out with his bobbery pack and i enjoyed it all.cheers chipper
  16. well done mate. im just a part-timer,its too cold for me to go out this week
  17. i hope it goes well.as for pics, get them put up but i can confidentley say your unlikely to be able to find all the bodies.if its like the farms i go on youll be shooting rats in cavities, cracks, over broken drains,on top of slurry pits etc etc etc. and buy a good litter picker...........essential kit for the rat shooter
  18. every farm is different and sometimes it takes a few trips to find the best time to go.sometimes i cant go at the best times because its usually a case of the later the better but we all have work commitments etc.any place with a large number of rats should provide good sport though at anytime at night and maybe even daytime. i sometimes put bait down but its rare, find where the rats are feeding and you should start to get into them.as with just about any type of hunting its when your quarry is scarce that you have to put more effort in. i prefer an amber filter,i find it gives the cleare
  19. cheers lads, ive just come back from another farm after seeing plenty of rats but only getting two.the dogs didnt have a good night and after id put them away and brought the gun out i couldnt get a safe shot even though the rats were often just sat there.i get nights like this when nothing goes right and every rodent seems to be sitting comfortably infront of a cow, chicken, farm dog or machinery, electric cables and pipes.
  20. a bit better tonight on another farm.we must have shot at least six more whose bodies couldnt be retrieved.
  21. what line of fell did you use? if you can please put up any pics of the fell terrier you used and of the pup you kept back? cheers.
  22. i havent done much shooting lately due to the weather.we got a few the other night but didnt see many.time will tell if this is due to us having killed most of them or if it was just the conditions on the night.i think weve done a good job and numbers are low but ive done enough ratting over the years to know that a place can look as if it dosent have rats but go out on another night or go earlier or later and its suprising how many are about.
