  1. most of the rats i get at night,id say eight out of ten, have to be marked and then either dug out, poked out or the piles of various rubbish moved to get at them.i get the odd one running down byers and across farmyards but not very often.i dont get to go onto places over run with rats so almost every one takes time to get at.out of the three rats above one was dug out of a rotting silage bale, one dug out of the hard packed straw in a calf pen and one poked out from under a heavy rusting steam cleaner. i had a look out with half and half yesterday afternoon but few rats were found and some
  2. well done.i havent done much of it but i like minkhunting.
  3. scent hasnt been very good when ive been out with beagles or foxhounds or with my own lurcher and pointer over the last month.
  4. good to see you back on here old dog
  5. thats an impressive tally bowderdale.
  6. sounds like you had a good day.ive spent many good days in that area with gwp lurchers.brilliant rabbit country. i wish i had the time to own a harris hawk.it must be great sport.maybe oneday ill get to see one fly.
  7. pointer

    gwp

its a good looking pup........ive had a few interesting walks out with my gwp lately.for some reason i just like being out with a wirehair,it dosent matter if nothing much happens they are just good dogs to watch out hunting.
  8. id imagine there wont be many lads that lamp rats regularly that havent taken the odd daft rabbit or even bolted a fox from somewhere when out at night but its a rare thing.thinking about it my terriers had a couple of jackdaws and a pigeon aswell.
  9. fair enough :clapper:and your quite right.
  10. i think he would enjoy it from what ive heard from other gwp owners its not usually a problem.lets face it a dog as big as a gwp jacking on a fox would look ridiculous.
  11. im not sure mate,i was just passing on the way to another pack of hounds. its not always easy to get out with packs these days and most need you to be vouched for.if you dont have any contacts at any packs all you can do is ring up the kennels you want to follow and ask them how you can go about showing your a genuine hunting supporter. theres plenty of this season left
  12. they are big for beagles but thats what the master likes.i did see a pack of beagles from yorkshire this season and they are alot smaller and all looked alike and they hunt similar land.it really is a case of each masters preference.
  13. if you have the work and the time for it then id run it on.if you havent then i wouldnt,we all know how easy it is to get too many dogs. i suppose the easiest way to make a decision is to look at the amount of work youve done in the past couple of seasons with the dogs you already have..........older dogs can still do alot of ratting and even if i expected to do more ratting i personally wouldnt get in a terrier if i had lurchers or whippets already.so id look at how much earthwork my terriers are doing this season and ask myself if its wise to give less work to them in future seasons due to
  14. i do a bit of rat shooting with air-rifles,ive shot about 700 or so this year, but every year when the crops come down at the back of my house a few rats find there way into my garden.so i just kill them with fenn traps........i enjoy shooting rats,i love hunting them with dogs, but my own garden is too close for comfort and half a dozen traps set around my chicken run and each side of my lawn has them sorted sharpish. shooting is effective, poison can be effective but fenn traps are fecking deadly and they are on duty 24/7
  15. nice to hear of a wirehair out hunting mate. my wirehair usually puts a fox or two out of cover when i take him out around the local wastelands.infact i took my Dad out this morning just to show him a fox.scent is crap with the conditions were having but after a few minutes the pointer had one running ahead of us and it wasnt long before i found him and my wirehair cross lurcher marking a big earth which seemed to get my retired terrier a bit excitable but unfortunately his working days are over. i can call the wirehair away easily but the lurcher has to be lead away. its hard to catch a
  16. hi davy the numbers have eased off as expected but theres still a few about.this weather hasnt helped,i get cold and wet week in week out when hunting with hounds or lurchers but im only a good weather shooter sadly due to other hunting commitments and a kennel full of dogs i dont find time to do as much airgunning as id like.
  17. the list of all registered packs with their contact details can be found on horse and hounds website.
  18. from what ive heard, which isnt much, they work like a pointer but dont go as far out.
  19. your right mate you cant but watching this fella hunt through all sorts of cover over the last few weeks has been fun
  20. i havent seen one work but know two keepers that like the cross.their dogs just look like young wirehairs.its certainly something ill consider if i want another dog like that.(i have a gwp) as for someone doing the cross for money, well some might, but id have thought you would make more money from breeding litters of springers or wirehairs.the cross would be worth less than a purebred wouldnt it?
  21. most dogs soon pick up the skill of predicting which hole a rabbit will exit from and snapping it up,a beagle isnt going to catch a running around but could catch a few bolters plus mark sets and watch nets.id imagine a beagle would soon learn to find and take sitting rabbits if you get to hunt over moorland/reedy type areas.
  22. alright mate, i knew there would be enough dogs out without needing my best hound as for my new muckboots ill have to make sure he dosent get near them,he simply loves to chew up neoprene it was a good morning out in great company and you cant get better than that.i finished the day off with a mooch out with Alfie which is always enjoyable. on the downside last week was the first week since july that i hadnt been out with a pack of hounds.
