  1. I just use a smoker to bolt what I can then dig out what I can.after I've got as many as possible it's an air-rifle job as on most places I've been ratting you can't get them all with dogs no matter how much you want to.I've used ferrets but it can be a slow process with them getting bit up and anyway the rats are often in Walls, drains, piles of rubbish etc etc etc where ferrets aren't of use. Every farm is different so there's no way of saying what the best methods are.i love ratting but find it hard to keep finding infested places here in county Durham. There does seem to be few about though
  2. Good going JD Do you think you'll do another airgun book at some point?
  3. i wish i could get good numbers every week but i cant, its back to normal for me ive had 18 this week with the dogs on our nightime forays and had another five today. It was still a good mornings mooch though.Id like to oneday have a rat pack but id need an awfull lot more permission and invites to do so.
  4. Good stuff mate,I've had some good days out with minkhounds and terriers.
  5. there seems to be alot of rats about at the moment.ill have to start shooting more and my other half (hedgehunter27) was shooting them last night after the dogs had their fun on several and bagged a dozen in no time .I know half and half is getting more permissions all the time aswell. its impossible to say if 2011 will be a good year for me on the rats even though i know jan and feb will produce more rats than usual.
  6. There are very few rabbits where i live or on the dales and fells that i could shoot or work a lurcher on.Its quite sad,i walked miles today after hounds on land that untill recently held big numbers of rabbits but i only saw two and a load of dead ones.I hunt a different quarry these days but i hope that rabbit numbers come back to what they were.
  7. cheers mate, yeah its been good so far, started with beagling yesterday and out with foxhounds tomorrow.i do love variety
  8. nice one mate, youve done well to get those rats with only one dog in a place like that.
  9. I went straight back out this afternoon with Half and Half to do some more ratting with the dogs.It was getting dark by the time we finished and id put three rats down and couldnt find them again and my lurcher had killed one which i never found in the dead leaves that littered the release pen. So we ended up getting forty which gave me just over a hundred for the day so im happy.
  10. I like the look of those,I'd imagine a vizsla cross would be very similar to the gwp crosses I've seen.
  11. We were out last boxing day pushing our way through snow with a footpack.it takes severe conditions to stop some huntsman from turning out.
  12. Some of the Keenest followers of beagles, minkhounds and fell packs I've met have been woman.they walk miles in all weather and they do it to see hounds working, not a horse to be seen.
  13. Cheers Dave,it wouldn't be the same without the big dogs.Alfie had a good weekend,he dosent do too bad considering I only got him to be a pet because I like Gwp's.
  14. It's good fun.I dont get chance to do much daytime ratting so it was a welcome change.
  15. Had a look out with Half and Half ratting.Theres still alot of cover which didnt help but we ended up with 30 odd.
  16. Had a tracker on a discovery and whilst it was never stolen they did ring me once to ask if it was ok when being loaded onto a recovery vehicle.it was flagged up once the back wheels were raised. However I found that the insurance discount was next to nothing and don't think it's worth the cost of getting one fitted unless you own something a bit special.
  17. Hi Davy, good to see your still culling a few.
  18. I said I consider anything over 19 inch to be a big rat, that's because I haven't taken many.I've killed loads of 18s but getting that extra bit is rare for me,........now if you go to places which have big rats good for you and I'd like to see one in a pic. As for saying who should come on here get a grip big lad, don't take the Internet forums so seriously.
  19. im off out with mine soon to try and get a couple of rats, just good fun for half an hour or so....... ive seen a few bull crosses out and about and i do like em,id just be a bit worried they were overly hard. good luck with getting what you want
  20. cats were once a big headache for me,theres nothing worse than going on a farm and your dog knacking the cat.......it dosent go down too well.i cant trust mine 100% but they are better than they were,i can usually shout them off if im close enough anyway. hedgehogs were once another pain, now i make sure my dogs completely ignore them.
  21. I have no dought he can kill foxes quickly, his head is bloody massive. If your bushing him he will probably eventually go to ground somewhere anyway.........its part and parcel of that game.I dont bush mine now as its just too dodgy.terriers are good fun even for ratting etc,i didnt go out hunting a couple of weeks back when a ratting invite came through.we got 60 odd in quick time, there isnt anything as fast and furious as when theres rats flying about.
  22. shame he hasnt been to ground zini, ive got a young terrier here that is doing ok but i wont know if he is any good for some time yet.
