  1. found an abscess on the neck of my old hob, six years old, managed to drain it off puss and crap a few days ago and sprayed it with iodine, but it still seems to be filling up, any ideas on how to treat it or what the cause is.
  2. i've got an eight month old bedlington greyhound pup that stands twenty inches tts,can anybody tell me if he will grow much bigger, someone told me that if the bedlington dog you use in the cross is on the small side, the pups could be small, his sire was seventeen tts read somewhere that some off the rillington strain can throw small pups when mated to greyhounds and whippets, any comments welcome, cheers.
  3. i've seen a good few farm bred collies, that could work the lamp and were soft mouthed, good ferreting and marking dogs. could work with the gun, and in my youth alot of the old boys always used them to feed their families when you had to catch rabbits to survive,as regards collies catching hares on the lamp it is no great feat.
  4. there were some pups a few ago in the countrymans weekly with aerdale/grey in them, think the bloke was called john staveleyif its any help.
  5. feed your ferrets dried and raw meat, you can give them a raw egg aswell, this diet will do them well in the cold weather, all the best mate
  6. just wondering about the racing whippet willhay who used to be advertised for stud in the old shooting news,i believe he was abit of a speed machine in his day, somebody told me les robinson of brigg used him regulary to add sting into his lurchers, this dog was around the timeof another whippet karl williams bow, any body still got any breeding back to these dogs just intrested.
  7. my old uncle worked this type of greyhound ferret for years, as like all the old poachers he always fed mainly bread and milk,he always kept hobs which were hard and strong workers, these ferrets were from abbot brothers from norfolk, who used to sell them in the exchange n mart, some of todays strain of these ferrets will possibly go back to their breeding, sadly i lost the last of the breed some years ago, far superior to the micky mouse ferrets being bred today.
  8. i have a small polecat x about 3 years old, every season she goes completly bald all over, butafter a few months grows a lovely thick winter coat again, with no problems again, this jill has never been mated.
  9. thanks for your comment donks, got to agree it is good to watch this type of hunting, had the dog out this morning, ran a couple of rabbits full bore, then ran another half heartedly, caught and retrieved a half grown one, soon after spotted along ear gone like a shot, any other members had dogs like this and what crosses were they it would be intresting to find out, thanks lads
  10. hi all,i have a bed/grey xwhippet/grey, had him since 8 weeks old,he is now 4yrs old, always been a goodhunter and retriever, but these last few weeks he has taken to stalking rabbits and freezing on point when he is only feet from them, when they run, sometimes he will give chase, and other times just stands and watches them run away, long ears are a different story gone like a bullet, have heard tales of collie xs doing this type of hunting,i once saw a saluki bred dog doing same thing,at at a loss as to why he has started doing this.
  11. thinking about a deerhoundxwhippet for general hunting, anybody on this site using them or breeding them, sensible comments on how good or bad workers they make.
  12. just wondering if any members could tell me how to breed black eyed white ferrets,do you need a hob and jill of that breeding or could you use a red eyed white hob on to a black eyed jill,i am not new to breeding ferrets, but have no idea on breeding this particular cross any comments would be appreciated.
  13. not a bad price to pay, i paid 120 pounds, 2years ago, cheapest i could get at the time.
  14. seem to remember seeing a picture of a bloke called aubrey fryer and a write up about him breeding smithfield lurchers years ago in an early lurcher book, think it was one of plummers journals
  15. How come mate? not being funny but it would take a good fit pup to take one even on the lamp I dont think a dog should see a hare till at least 15month lamped or not just my opinion though never a truier word spoken matey, only true test on a hare is in daylight given fair law, running one dog as it always was.
  16. used to really enjoy it when it was shooting news, it was jammed packed with real genuine lurcher and terrier articles written by true dogmen like phil lloyd and daergi , bought some damn good pups from back pages, think the cost in the early eighties was 40p, still buy it as cmw,but have to agree it has become a lot more political with a lot of trade adverts, but saying this still find a lot of intresting bits to read, even if some of it is repotious.
  17. like samba use the chudley range of dogfood always done my dogs and pups well , been feeding now for near 20 yrs, no complaints and a reasonable cost.
  18. thought heart break packed up years ago, seem to remember they were based in lancashire, run by a bloke steve holroyd, heard good and bad reports about the pups bred by him, used show bred bedlingtons as stud dogs, plummer did write up on them years ago, in shooting news.
  19. totally agree with what you say mate had same problems with whippets i used to work, great dogs for bit of ferreting, but wire was like a magnet to them, alright for half a dozen on the lamp, sprinters not stayers, wont go wrong with dogs your working now,all the best for the season.
  20. hi nealy, george kelly bred some excellent strains of bedlington whippets and always had his ad in the old shooting news of the late seventies and early eighties, i recall he was suffering ill health some years ago, rob fews of bedlington lurcher fame had some of his strain a few years ago ,george was aone of true old lurcher and countryman who bred workers to workers, im told that sadly george is no longerwith us.
  21. totally agree with merlin, lots of pups getting sold for telephone number prices, lets remember lurchers are working dogs for working class people, like every thing else prices for pups have gone mad these last few years, and no im not mean to pay more than a 100 for a pup, i do believe alot of money is charged for pups that due to their breeding and financial gain will never amount to anything ,but then again you pay your prices and take your chances
  22. years ago a chap called george kelly of brownhills staffordshire, used to breed this cross regular, they were real crackers at the rabbitting game,,anybody remember his breeding, they were advertised in the early days of shooting news
  23. cracking looking dog, just my type of dog for ferreting, lamping, and a bit of general hunting, this cross will try their hearts at all theydo, what height is he mate.
  24. selling wild rabbits in my neck of the woods for7.50 each and 4.20 for saddle and 2 back legs, used to be a cheap meal for the poorer familys, butchers cashing in again, still give you nothing for them when youve got aload to get rid off
  25. thinking about one of these crosses ,i believe dave platts breeds good uns any comments welcome, cheers
