Shortest barrel length?
SportingShooter replied to Dan_Mercian's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Can you do that? Or is it stupidly hard metal to cut? I'm guessing it could be done because of all these criminals with 'sawn offs' 24 and a quarter is the legal minimum length for a shot gun not 24 inch. Not sure where the 1/4" comes from Sage, I was just going by the Firearms Act, -
Shortest barrel length?
SportingShooter replied to Dan_Mercian's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Depends on the size of the bore in the first place, the easiest way that I know of is to have removable chokes fitted. I'm not sure how they re choke a barrel from cylinder -

Yep, on a Shotgun certificate, anything under 24" is too short to be held on SGC. To me, that would also be too short for rough shooting or most other types of shooting too. 28" is fairly standard game gun length. -
Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
SportingShooter replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If the above is true, can you provide me with evidence to back it up please, not hearsay or otherwise irrelevant word of mouth. The reason companys who buy and sell cartridges in bulk have to be certificated for two reasons, the first being they have to BUY them in the first place, hence needing a Shotgun Certificate, the second being the amount of propellant held inside the cases exceeds that which can be held with a Shotgun Certificate, so they have an Explosives Certificate for storage. i have the same on some occasions,im a sgc holder not got firearms so what would happen if stopped -

i have the same on some occasions,im a sgc holder not got firearms so what would happen if stopped and the police found some 22 and 222 rounds in my truck. As said, Firearms and their Ammunition is an entirely different matter and possessing Section 1 ammunition is an offence in its own right. -
I'm wondering why a second hand cabinet only has one key in the first place Where have the others gone? There's normally two at least.

Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
SportingShooter replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Might get arrested on "suspicion" but they will soon find there is nothing to charge you with, no offence to answer to in fact. Which then becomes the territory of unlawful arrest as there is no power to do so. -
My guess is that you never removed the choke when you cleaned it. cleaning the bore, as you have found out does not clean the threads on the choke, the same thing ocurs when folks don't realise that their mod will rust solid on the end of their rifle if they don't take it off and clean the threads each time they use the rifle, the powder residue is highly hygroscopic, that is to say it attracts moisture, so the longer you leave it in, the less likley it is you'll be able to get it out. but 1/4 would be a great all round choice, I'm sure Briley probably have something that would fit, otherw

Shotgun Cartridge posession offence?
SportingShooter replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The S.11 is for use at clay shoots but it was just an example that came to mind at the time. There's nothing to stop you walking away with any spare cartridges at the end and having them in your possession. I found a quote earlier from the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) website that was listing that it was not an offence to possess shotgun cartridges. This is advice which is given to prosecutors from government lawyers so i'm inclined to believe what I read on there -

Its not an offence to possess shotgun cartridges without a certificate as you can be legally given them without possessing a certificate, for instance when clay shooting under a S.11 exemption you are given them to shoot with. You only need an Explosives Certificate to possess over a certain amount of propellant, this is taken to be the powder contained in already made cartridges as well as loose. This also applies to black powder, to purchase loose powder other than that already loaded in cartridges you need a certificate. Black powder also has its own storage/security arrangements as i -
Imp. Cylinder is the equivalent of 1/4 (IIRC) which is what I use most of the time for that sort of quarry through my Auto

please help identify this gun maker.!!!
SportingShooter replied to lugsy's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The Midland Gun Co. were and are a gunmaker based in the Birmingham gun quarter. They have a long and varied history, just type them into Google and i'm sure you'll find as much info as you need. -
Couple of things that have been touched on. As Matt says, you need to be over 18 to buy guns or ammunition, in any other circumstance you have to be given or gifted the gun and ammunition, no money can change hands. As for giving written permission for someone else to buy you ammunition, sounds like a combination of various bits of information, but it is untrue. It does appear you're worrying a little too much. A shotgun certificate, unlike a Firearms, is a "right" and the police would have to prove you ineligible to hold possess a shotgun or ammunition before they could refuse

lamping with a 410
SportingShooter replied to leepieman123's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
A .410 will kill a Fox at very close range but you have to remember that it has somewhere in the region of 30-50% less pellets. .410's and Foxes are best left to them being used for humane despatch of cage trapped Foxes. A 12 with the correct load (BB's commonly) will have an effective range out to around 40 yards as long as the shot is in the right place. At night, an unsilenced .410 is going to scare away everything that a 12 will. There are "silenced" 12 bores out there, normally by the same manufacturers as the .410s. If you're planning on shooting a lot of foxes, then i'd be -
Personally, 28gr of 7's is all I ever use for Pheasant and other similar game birds. I do however use the same load/shell that i've been using for years and through relatively tight chokes. Can't say i've personally had a problem but just see how you go with them.

Home Office report on FACs and SGCs
SportingShooter replied to RicW's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I did see the report but again will be quoting from memory. I don't agree with anyone who has been found guilty of a criminal offense being totally banned for life from holding a certificate. There should at the very least be an appeals procedure through the Crown Courts, however there are some people who have certificates that have recent convictions for some form of violent crime which is something that needs looking at. As you say you can never legislate for a person's sudden mental breakdown, however I think there should be more information sharing between GPs and the Police shoul -
How long did it take you to get your FAC?

Gower is fine, its Pembs you really don't want to go, full of filthy refineries and things. Won't find a massive industrial plant within 100 miles of the Gower eh Mal? Sorry about the thread Harry, if you need anything for down this way, drop me (or even Mal if you dare venture to Pembs) a PM P.S my signature is from the Gower coast, just one of the views

Not as many sheep shaggers in Pembs as there is on the Gower.. The Gower salt marshes slow the sheep down to a crawl & make them easy to catch for deranged Swansea jacks such as yourself.. As opposed to the strange creatures that come out of the Dock? At least what we have here are identifiable
