Help required, Pigeon ammo for undercover work
SportingShooter replied to k9delboy's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Only other ammunition I can think of would be either .22 Short or .22 Caps or "CB" shells. The latter have about 30 ft/ls of energy IIRC. I'd still use an air rifle. Far Safer. Can you not borrow one just for this job? -
Taken from BASC Certain Species, in certain circumstances can be viewed as pests. These include: Crow, Collared Dove, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Jackdaw, Jay, Magpie, Feral Pigeon, Rook, Woodpigeon, Canada Goose, Monk Parakeet and Ring-necked Parakeet. These can be considered pest birds and dispatched under a general licence. The above is in England only I believe. Wales and Scotland do not have the Parakeet on their licenses. Also, when considering culling a lesser black back gull you really need to consider why. There has been some interesting case law where these have bee

All true. I just like the "quirkiness" of it. Be very boring if we all shot the same i agree to a point....but after paying so much for 410 cartridges and only being able to get such a limited selection.....ended up selling my 410., i liked the quirkiness and challenge of using it.....it was so slight and light i could use it one handed like a big pistol.....but with the ever increasing price of cartridges anyway the "quirky" gauges are getting very expensive. In fact in some countries you can only get 12g cartridges..........so if you travel and shoot you need a 12 or you

At first glance I thought it was uprooted turf turned over. Don't think you'll get any money from the Sun for that.

Black gold cartridges. Anyone used them?
SportingShooter replied to samearl14's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Classic cartridge that has stood the test of time. I can remember picking up spent GP cases in the quarry long before I even had a SGC. Just a good all round solid dependable cartridge. John Like you not being able to shoot with the Black Golds John, i've never had any success with GPs. I still have about 20 unopened boxes of GPs, older ones with chrome brass and never really hit anything with them. -
Black gold cartridges. Anyone used them?
SportingShooter replied to samearl14's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Used their Clay variety when they first came out and wasn't very impressed. The game shells I tried in 30gr 6 about three years later and a vast improvement. Certainly up with the better shells -
Always liked a 16. The size of the bore is ballistically perfect for firing a 28gr load which is also very comfortable to shoot. I think one of the attractions to them for me is its "something different" but every bit as good as a 12. SS

Not something i'd expect to find anywhere. Must have been a surprise. Bet it would look good with a few hours spent taking the rust off it and a few thick coats of black paint. Any marks still visible on it? Crests etc

WHAT'S YOUR 22LR ZEROED IN AT?.
SportingShooter replied to PLEDGEY's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
60 yards. -
I think everyone understands why you want the moderated shotgun but even so, you cannot buy suitable fox loads for that distance in subsonic. If you fire an ordinary shotgun cartridge from a moderated shotgun, the only difference it will make is less felt recoil. The noise will still be very loud. A moderator will not stop the noise and crack of a sonic shell, it is physically impossible. I would save your money and take the time to apply for a variation your FAC (presuming you have one from the above comments) for a .22LR with a moderator which will happily deal with foxes at tha

As said, can't shoot them without a permit from DEFRA etc I quite like to see them around, I know they can be a pain to fisheries. Cormorants, if only they were on the vermin list, would knock those ugly things off all day long!

Kynoch loading 375H&H
SportingShooter replied to dan_hunter's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
From the above John, I would suggest that distance may be immaterial relatively speaking, rather the expansion of the bullet that needs to be tested. Its like the old saying, you can shoot deer with an elephant gun but you still need the right bullet in the right place. Would it be worth perhaps dropping Kynamco an email to try and find out the exact bullet/spec of bullet so you can then begin to compare how thick the jacket would be. Once you have either the spec or the manufacturer you can compare different brands of .375 heads. May be making a mountain out of a molehill for wha -
Had a nasty burn once and a honey soaked gauze and bandage were put on it in hospital. Healed very well too.

Best 12 bore cartridge for pheasant
SportingShooter replied to andyH1966's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I'd tend to disagree with most of the above regarding shot sizes and distances. Andy, when you say average height birds, then i'd guess we are talking out to around 35 yards as a maximum distance rather than the 45+ that seem to be a regular feature on some shoots. I find from much patterning at varying distances and then putting it into practice, there are two things which are vital when it comes to choosing a cartridge. First of all, how that shell patterns through your gun, every gun will react differently with every different type of specification, it may be very little differe -
Agreed All I ever use.
-
You might want to try patterning them to see how they perform. A sheet of cardboard or paper 1m x 1m with a dot dead centre at your common shooting distance. Was told once the technical distance that manufacturers use is 32 yards. Might show you the problem as if the pattern is useless, the shells are as are your chances of hitting much apart from thin air.

London Mayor Boris Johnson has just been quoted as saying the following "Riot will not stop us putting on "the greatest show on earth" the Olympics" Just goes to show just how detached he is, last nights riot had nothing whatsoever to with the Olympics.

Do i need to apply for SGC before my FAC
SportingShooter replied to Britishbull24's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As above, just apply. Really can't see the problem, you have a genuine need for firearms and therefore require an FAC. So long as your record is clean you have what is needed, permission and good reason. -
If you aren't a member already, then contact BASCs firearms department for some advice in the first instance. Their legal representatives are skilled in particularly firearms law and so would be perhaps the best persons to speak to. With regards a shotgun certificate, the onus is on the police to prove that you are otherwise so incapable of holding a shotgun certificate and shotguns that if they granted it to you, you would be a danger to yourself and others. If they can't prove that you are some form of danger or untrustworthy person likely to abuse the position of a SGC holder, the
