  1. I know what you are saying ;it's an easy cliché to roll-out and unfortunately has a lot of truth to it . But there are big and small firms out there that manage to do very well for themselves and their investors by taking pride in the standard of products and services they provide. I don't begrudge them success or wealth. Sadly the Water board bosses and investors are of the wrong type and need culling .
  2. I reckon Neil Young/ Wiko Johnson but l ain't seen him in a while. And that's my loss!
  3. My billThanks to water capture and recycling l'm hopefully not adding too much to the CEO of Southern Water's bonus. Actually l think the new CEO has been quoted as saying he would't take a bonus for his first year in the job. I should think not! His predecessor recieved a bonus of £550.900, which effectively more than doubled his salary in 2021 . 2021 was also the year Southern Water paid 90 million pounds in fines for discharging poo and piddle ( probably some loo paper and toilet chemicals too) into rivers and the sea along the South Coast . Apparently these fines were reco
  4. There is a similar design used for rabbits called the Morant Ark. It's named after Major Morant a retired Victorian Army Officer . He didn't actually invented the ark , just built some to his own design and promoted a system of outdoor rabbit rearing that also bears his name .
  5. Now those people have some super boats and are real enthusiasts . A bit scary too. I mean they are organised into International Chapters like the canoeing version of the HA!
  6. Er no.In fact it it might not be a good idea to look too closely at my "woodwork" ?. I made a similar but bigger canoe about 14 years ago . It was the product of enthusiasm over design skill but it worked . One built in fault was that it had too much "rocker" ; the ends turn ed up which looked cool and made it fantastically manoeuvrable but it was slow in a straight line unless there was a load of gear or another person to make it sit lower in the water ; lt was almost too buoyant. Paradoxically it was heavy to lug about out of the water because l over engineered it with too much woodw
  7. I had the same. I was really losing confidence but as Deker suggests, the bullets were clipping the moderator. It was one of the long Parker Hale ones and even though l'm always precious about the way l transport the rifle l can only think the dog may have leant on it in the van. Could also be a worn thread on the moderator causing a tiny tremor. Especially if the moderator is removed a lot. Instructions are often given to remove the mod when the rifle is stored to stop barrel erosion. But if you do this the threads wear . Damned if you do,damned if you don't. ?
  8. The floor will probably be rush matting. The sort you get in Wiko for use on the beach. My old canoe had a thin removable ply floor but l replaced it with the matting when the ply rotted . Neither the dog or l ever put a foot through the canvas. In fact canvas is surprisingly strong. I got badly hooked up in the dark on the end of a submerged branch once . The tide was falling so l was getting more hung-up by the second. I shifted everything including myself to the very back of the canoe and managed to get the weight off the snag. Then paddled back with the dog on my lap to keep what l assume
  9. Well the thumb is now serviceable so today l started the skinning-up ,if you'll pardon the expression ?.A welding clamp came in handy for stretching the canvas round the frame
  10. I had a pair of unissued desert boots that l kept for several years . When l did start using them the soles fell apart in what looked like lumps of cheese in a couple of days . I don't know if its true or not but l was told they had biodegradable soles that broke down if the boot wasn't worn regularly. The metal plate that poked into my foot certainly wasn't particularly biodegradable! As for replacements - don't get fixated on a specific brand . All the respected brands make boots to the same specifications . Military personnel are often allowed to select f
  11. I guess you've got your other hand in your pocket.
  12. Definitely ; six nests in one house yesterday .None bigger than a melon but the job before that involved a surprisingly big one .
  13. Amongst the exhibitors at a recent German Shooting Show was a new company called Wichsenhand. It claims to be at the forefront in the development of specialised hunting clothing . Some of their stuff actually looks quite good. Unfortunately when it came to debuting what the company describe as their "Cutting edge " range of night shooting gillie-suits , things went a bit awry . Two of their models started having a dust-up on the catwalk! Spectators watched as Security Guards quickly stepped-in to restore order. As yet the two models involved in th
  14. What sort of pattern does the air rifle throw with shot shells? And is it any good for dispatching sick sheep??
  15. Don't forget the shot shells!? .22 LR +fieldcraft x by the art of holdover/under = proper hunting
  16. My first day of the river Season kicked up a surprise. I was running late and feeling lazy so l grabbed the Grandkids' rod because it was already set up . 7 ft of vintage solid glass a tobacco tin of spare bits and a Le Omnia reel made up the low tech outfit. Twenty small rudd later l was happy enough and about to pack up as it was getting dark but went for the obligatory classic last cast . I'm glad l did!
  17. I had thoughts about our rivers being too clean a few years ago too but have changed my mind based on personal experience . I live on the headwaters of a river. It rises as tiny forest ghylls but by the time it hits the sea it's the second fastest flowing in England . The pollution starts almost at its source . An estate lake formed from damming one of the forest streams used to be crystal clear but is now an overstocked muddy carp hole .A couple of other carp fisheries also discharge their brown overflow into what used to be streams of pure spring water . There are still wild t
  18. Put a line of Tippex round the mounts and see if a crack appears after a few shots .
  19. There are some lovely homemade canoes out there . Made by real craftspeople . The sort who can measure properly ,use tools and don't cut bits off themselves . Unlike me. Even though the outer skin on my canoe will actually be a single layer of artist's canvas ,that's about as near to a work of art it'll get.? The frame is now complete apart from a dose of wood treatment . I think l'll buy some preservative from a shop rather than using my own blood this time!
  20. I'm close to finishing the frame of my Mark2 fishing canoe . It's very similar to the Mark1 version l made a few years ago but a lot lighter and hopefully without my built in design faults . Anyway today l had a stroke of luck when l neatly sliced a big chunk off the back of my thumb while cutting a tricky angle on one of the long side strainers. I dripped so much blood l'll save a fortune on wood stain!?
  21. Not sure about that sausage ! Is Philip Shofield working in a chip shop now?
  22. I've caught two. The first one was a few years ago in a loft two houses away from the one l caught today. There might be a little local gene pool. They occur in little pockets round here . I see odd ones every year .
  23. They aren't partially rare in my area . Just a little bit rarer after this one and it's normal mates decided to devastate a customer's veg patch.
  24. Yes, l was given strict instructions to slice it into 3/4inch thick steaks and score it part way through in a diamond pattern. Then brine it with a couple of rinses and fresh brine changes for 48 hours . It worked. I remember years ago trying to roast one like a domestic goose. It tasted like what l imagine silage tastes like. Even the dogs wouldn't touch it?
