On a positive note. My daughter called me round for advice on the rather sickly baby whippet she'd acquired . It was the only pup left and clearly the runt and had no papers. It also had weird skin problems but being a soft touch (like her Dad ?)she felt sorry for it. Not soft enough to pay the asking price though and she walked away with the pup for the princely sum of £100. One look told me it wasn't even a whippet! Two years on she has a rather good little rough coated lurcher bitch.

Ignore this post . I was trying to edit a question and had a phone malfunction. Sorry. I am a techno numpty at times

It's a great series of posts. My brother was keen on falconry for many years . He said that of the birds he had his Harris was the only bird that he felt was a friend . I don't know if that makes sense. Anyway , please keep up the progress. diary ?

A couple for Wolfdog from a 1947 Ducks Unlimited book. And something more British. And just to be a bit multicultural , a photograph my Dad took in 1962 of the Horsham &Crawley Boxing Day meet. The cowboy was a local farmer .

The Angling Guide : a wealth of interesting advertisements.... Advice on how to dress properly for the bank. No namby pamby thermal cammo suits or bivvy tents . Real men fished in string vests. Or even half naked. For some reason the booklet included this advert for a pen.....

The View From My Swim Today consisted of my good friend standing on the opposite bank wondering just what had taken his trotted maggots on a size 14 to 4lb line and centre-pin reel This view remained unchanged for half an hour as the fish did what it liked . During this time l made it across a bridge , negotiated floodwater and a bit of a bog to see if l could lend a hand. Or at very least get a glimpse of the beast before it came off. When l did catch sight of it l simply announced that it was huge without mentioning the species . If he knew what he'd latched onto a

I can't believe some of the disbelieving numpties on this . The way that photo shows the puma off is no different from the way a fisherman arranges a trophy shot of a big fish. Anyway why would it be faked? Pumas aren't rare . Thanks for posting Wolfdog ; l reckon a few of the disbelieving chimps on this site owe you an apology.

. Foxdropper l dare not ask what else is buried there . Especially as she is a widow! Sausagedog : nooooo?

Not quite Groundhog Day : this one was awake . As per instructions it joined its friend in the compost trench . Either the client is going to have the best vegetables in the County or a Steven King style plague of zombie foxes .

3.9kg . That's 8lb - the size of a big human baby!

Good Lord no , her reputation would be ruined .

The Sun that's appeared for the last couple of days seems to have brought the foxes out during the day in my area . No doubt the the thawing fields have made grubbing about a bit easier for them than it's been for a couple of weeks . Though some seem simply content to bask in the warmth . I shouldn't have been surprised when just as l thought l might have an early finish this afternoon l had a call from a customer. She's a lady in her nineties who despite using a walking- aid still maintains a bit of a smallholding. It wasn't that long ago that she shot her own foxes -usual

Very close Shaaark : collie over a slim lurcher?

Moses Smith , Martin Knowlden(?) and Ted Walsh too! Most of my old photos are in the loft but these were to hand. As a puppy ,looking cute and cheeky. And with my daughter ,looking a bit smug after a show .Though l can't remember what those prizes were for . Certainly not the show ring . A well known lurcher person once said that it was a pity that he didn't grow into his ears because he'd be five MPH faster without all that wind resistance?

Original, unused, J Duffus & Sons, mole traps
comanche replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
The box in itself is a possibly a bit of social history . I don't know if Metalrax is still in business but l'm sure G Wilkinson still sells hardware under the the Progress name . The phone number dates it to the early 1990s or before ;l think . The decimal price is another clue to its age. One price tag has the name Homemakers on it : l wonder if they are still in business . And with an original price of £3.99 that wasn't a cheap trap! You have to wonder what ,if any , rights there were to the J Duffus name . The patent must've b -
Escaped for a couple of hours in the afternoon of New Year Day. The stream was high and murky and the swim l chose was the best of a bad lot . It was a bit snaggy but at least it offered a little slack water under the rod tip. So l plopped out a lob-worm on a short trace below a running bullet and to my surprise l caught a roach ,a perch and a rather fine eel . All on the same worm and very welcome . I'm just a bit worried that by catching three fish on New Year's Day l might've used up my quota for the next twelve months . ️Have a Good New Year.️

Nor is laughing (?)at One's own so called jokes. Or embarrassing guests from abroad . Especially when someone has extended the chance for us to extend our hunting interests. I'm,afraid l might not be Moderator material, but despite what you would like to believe to the contrary ,that doesn't remove my right to an opinion as to a Moderator's role .

You know Wolfdog ; l've had cause to look into the odd US trap and fishing forum . Compared with the squabbling pixies on The Hunting Life US forum members certainly seem to know how to behave with decency and respect on line . And look at the categories on offer ; "Kids' writing and drawing competition." l doubt if some THL members could be trusted with crayons .

Random photos from the last couple of weeks

I don't know how how common it is to bitten but you are right ; they certainly aren't rare. Any coat that's been hanging in my outhouse for a while will have a nest in it somewhere . T'other Half has on two occasions been bitten on the inner thigh while gardening. Once was definitely by a FBW . The second assailant wasn't apprehended but the wounds were identical . A sensible boiler suit tucked into socks has replaced the floaty hippy skirt for all serious horticultural tasks. -
Well l had my Daughter and the Grandchildren ,well the three Grand teenagers , over last night .It's a bit of an annual pre Christmas thingy . First time l ever provided more food than they could eat. They brought their dog which was fine until she decided playing card games would be more exciting for everyone if she jumped on the table .? It seems that eldest Grandchild thought it fitting to repay my hospitality by making me subject to an amusing feature on her phone. All great fun! I wish you all a good Chrismas and New Year.??️??

Like the poem says ; fruit woods. Only thing is that if you're smelling your fire too much your chimney isn't drawing fumes .

Caught in act of having poo( the spider not me?) Frost-proofing mole traps with local materials. And it payed off though the mole was still frozen to the trap This little soul woke me up, so 3am found me spuddling in the van for a trap. Funny that l heard the mouse running over the carpet but didn't hear the trap go off. Anyway only one of us saw the Sun rise. Hopefully this is the squirrel that was nicking the insulation from a customer's loft . Coupled with temporary fix to the soffet it seems to've done the job. I didn't really want to spend Cristmas checking traps

I always thought the Dust Stik was such a lovely simple concept that should've been worked -up a bit better. What iriot thought a heavy die-cast dust pot waving about on fifteen bendy feet of badly sealed poles was a great design? But with a bit of thought .......
