Lucky? Stikes me that you might be a bit like the famous golfer, when someone told him he was lucky after a really good bunker shot had gone in the hole. He said, "the more I practice the luckier I get!" Well done, you got up and out early and you reaped the rewards Atb, ft

There is a lot of information to be found in "Gough Thomas's" book Shotguns & Cartridges, which you can order from your local library for £1.00. Obviously you have to give it back, but it's still a bargain. ft

Cumbrian, yes and for two reasons; 1/ If I was saving up for a higher mag scope and could not afford on at the moment. I'm getting on and my eyes aren't as good as they used to be 2/ If I was only going to be woodland/close quarter shooting. The "NORMAL" magnification for a stalking scope seems to be 6x42, but not that many years ago deer were regularly killed with rifles fitted with similar scopes to yours. The modern fashion seems to be for high power scopes with adjustable magnification. I would rather fit your scope to my rifle than a cheap peice of higher power glass any day.

Illuminated? My friend Alan uses his Swaro 3-12x50 PV on his .243 for lamping foxes and swears by it, not at it. ft

I bought a Harris swivel 9"/13" and only use it when zeroing. I bought, or rather was bought, a pair of X3M1 adjustable stalking sticks in the field. My kids bought them for a Christmas present for me two years ago, they were on offer for £15.00 inc postage. Ideal for sitting or standing and a good help on uneven ground when walking. Imho much better in the field than a bipod. Atb, ft

Polky, you should have no trouble getting either a FAC or SGC if you provide a reasonable reason for wanting them. Clay pigeon shooting and a rifle club are perfectly valid reasons for posessing both. Atb, ft

Well done! A perfect cull beast, how old do you think he was?

Varmints, you could pick up a brand new (discontinued model) Swarovski 6x42 for £450, or a s/h S&B 3x12 x56 for £550 from macleods of Tain. Buy Gunmart and troll for details, there are lots of deals available. If you want new a S&B Hungarian 6x42 (30mm tube) can be had from F A Anderson for £481. But if you are foxing at long range the second hand S&B would be a better bet. You will buy a good mod, stainless etc from ASE, PES or Wildcat and get change from your £300. I would go for the PES scout. Atb, ft

Smart bullets? Don't see how that works jingzy. They expand no matter what they hit, the more resistance, the bigger the expansion, surely? I use Federal 140gn powershoks at the moment but am in the process of kitting up for reloading, the Norma 120gn BT looks good and would probably be a good all-rounder for fox and smaller deer. I have been looking at the reloading process and asking a lot of questions of people who load for the 6.5x55. The reloaders questioned seem to favour either the Norma 120gn BT or the Hornaday SST in 129gn. I think I will choose one round which does all th

Suppressor for a Tikka T3 Lite .223

The "sproket" is, I think, the rear bush that supports the part of the mod that sits over your barrel. With the screw thread on your barrel, that gives two support points for your mod. They should be readily available, your local gunshop should be able to order the correct one for you if they do not have it in stock. If not try this link; http://www.reflexsuppressors.co.uk/ Atb, ft -
Liam, I have two friends that I stalk with occasionally who have all singing and dancing scopes, one an S&B, the other a Swaro and they are beautiful. Both leave them set at 7x for deer stalking and never move them. But they have similar scopes mounted on foxing rifles and find the variable mag really useful for long range stuff. I bought a 7x50 S&B in a sale from Macleods of Tain, I also ended up buying my Sako 75 6.5x55 finnlight from them too. It produces 3/4" groups with federal 140gn powershok's off the bi-pod in the field, not bench rested! In fact Macleods supplied me wi

Suppressor for a Tikka T3 Lite .223

The best value per decibel reduction moderator in the sporting rifle tests was the PES muzzle can. But I think they are big and bulky and spoil the look of a rifle. I would go with a reflex (over the barrel) mod, and make sure it is one with a rear bush. And yes i know the bush can affect barrel harmonics, but if you are going to take the rifle in the field and give it some abuse, the bush helps protect the alignment of the mod/barrel. I have a t8, and everyone hates them seemingly! Because they rust, (mine hasn't, yet) even though they are better than most in decibel reduction tests -
I agree lads, I don't think there are many hard and fast rules with munties. We have them on our shoot and mostly you only seem them singly. If you are lucky you get a doe and kid, and just very occasionally we have seen three in the same field. The september before last we saw two fighting and a third following them round in a stubble below our big wood. Mind you we think we have munties, but a friend over in Norfolk tells me they had a professional in on their shoot who shot 9 munties in a week with clients. I saw my first one round here in 1983 and they have increased steadily.

They seem to like any bramble that has fresh growing tips here in Worcs. On a new permission of mine there is 3/4 acre corner patch that is nothing but grass, weeds and 2ft to 4ft bramble stems. I will ask round and pm you if I find out anything interesting. Atb, ft

Wam, The law in Wales and England prohibits using; "any rifle having a calibre less than.240ins(6.00mm) or a muzzle energy of less than 1700ft lbs (2305 joules)", for taking any deer apart from the legal exemptions given for CWD and muntjac.. Do you meet the legal requirements? Will it kill them, absolutely! But as stated before, try for a neckshot. The v-max might make a real mess if you hit any bone. Atb, ft

I looked at both last year. I thought that I would only be able to afford a Tikka T3, which is a good rifle, and not be able to afford a Sako. Then Sako produced the 85 and all the little 75's on the shelves in gunshops across the country were discounted. Thus bringing them into my price range . I spoke to all sorts of folks who had both, some of them were gunsmiths and rifle makers. They all said, without exception, "If you can afford it, buy the Sako". The same parent company owns both companies, but the finish on the rifles is very different. For example if you get both rifles

I know there are some estates in Scotland that produce stage over 20 stone regularly but not many. Lowland animals do not have such a hard time surviving the winters. Consequently they do grow bigger on average, at least according to everything I have read that has been published by the BDS. ft

Dear all, i have recieved a message from the hunting life site this morning. The message was about new forum rules and was sent by "jurdreda". There does not seem to be anyone listed of that name on this site. I also cannot open the message, the screen remains blank. Odd. Is there something I should know? ft
