Great write-up and pictures Another vote for the 9"-13". Blag a loan of one and try before you buy, unless of course you are a jockey, in which case ignore me. My family and friends do so I won't be offended. ft

As someone who is not trusted with a camera by his wife anymore (don't ask, there were two sea trout related incidents when cameras didn't make it home ), it is an absolute pleasure to see so many wonderful pictures. Well posted gentlemen. Have you sen any CWD while in Norfolk? When my brother lived in Norfolk I was fortunate to see CWD on the shoot he was a member of. They had reds (occasionally), roe and munty's too. Right on the edge of the Broads, bliss. ft

I only know of the commercial ones, sold by Bushwear et al. So the question has to be can you make one as cheaply as you can buy one? To comply with Food Hygeine Legislation it would have to be stainless steel. I have never used a cradle for either roe, fallow or the one munty I have skinned. I use a hoist and a gambrel. To make a "food safe" preperation table i have had a piece of stailess steel made to fit on top of my chest freezer in the garage. Not perfect but better than nothing. atb, ft

I have had 37 since last April on a permission that nearly reaches the local town. It is the only permission I have where I have been asked to specifically control foxes. It is an wetland area full of ground nesting birds and only about 200 acres in two parcels of 170 acres and 30 acres. If you walk or drive through the town at night it is surprising how many foxes there are about. ft

why do deer stalkers charge so much
flytie replied to wboulter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
mate i dont need to save to go stalking so what the f**k you on about i didnt say i cant afford to go stalking just dont like being ripped off Just a wealthy whinger then? If you don't like the price, don't pay it. Market forces apply, but I am sure you can find a bargain if you look round a bit. Mind you, it's just easier to bleat about it I suppose ft -
why do deer stalkers charge so much
flytie replied to wboulter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Do you know where to find sympathy...........its between shit and syphillis in the dictionary I can't afford (17 year old twins will do this to you) to pay to go stalking for medal stuff or culls, but am fortunate that I have negotiated the right to stalk over some land locally. Stop whinging and save up like the rest of us. ft -
re blacking gun barrels
flytie replied to ilovetoshoot12345's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have a mate who is an RFD and prciaion engineer, when I went to see him the other day he was "browning" some barrels from an old William Evans. He showed me a book he has with over 400 different recipies for blueing, blacking and browning. Why not have a look in the library or try some search engines? Alchemey is the best word i can come up with to describe some of the processes. If I remember I will ask him for the book title. ft -
My plastic fantastic A Sako 75 Finnlight in 6.5x55, T8 reflex mod, Harris 9"x13"S, Optilock Mounts and a 7x50 S&B with Butler Creeks. I don't often use the bi-pod, I prefer using sticks. ft

Which Moderator for a Ruger 243
flytie replied to bullmastiff's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
The new Jager, you have to ring them up as it's not on their web-site yet, is strippable and beats the rest on price i believe. I have not used it, but saw a review in a magazine. Worth a thought if the lads on a tight budget. ft -
Try asking if the local estates will sell you a carcass. Much cheaper than off a game dealer. ft

    Frozen, thawed, frozen, thawed etc.etc. = food poisoning. No thanks I will give them at most three or four days, I normally do them the day after shooting, then eat or freeze. I'm not big on eating rotten meat. As a child we had to eat what was put in front of us, now I'm a big boy (old git) I can please my self, And do ft

FAC application and footpaths?
flytie replied to Leicester hunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have footpaths crossing some of my permissions, what the FEO's seem to want is to know that you are aware of it and will take suitable precautions, like shooting early and late. If it is a high traffic area they might like you to put up signs, although my friends and I have found this sometimes acts, on certain members of the general public, like a red rag to a bull. We have even got our local FEO to agree that we can shoot over the river avon in one place as it is the safest shot available to us, it's into a very long, steep bank where the deer are maurauding a forestry commission gran -
S&B Hungarian are good scopes. If you are limited to one rifle for the moment, and if you might fancy a pop at a deer in the future, why not a .243? And before everyone starts, I have a 6.5 and will not sell it because I believe it superior to the .243 in what i want to achieve (I may add another calibre though), but the .243 was designed as a varmint rifle and is outstanding in that capacity, but is deer capable if you use the 100gn bullets. Just a thought ft

complete shooting ban on all feather
flytie replied to watchman's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Wild duck, specifically teal (if pressed to choose just one species). Wonderful shooting and they taste good too ft -
Spend more, or as much, on the scope than the rifle. It's an old saying but so, so true. You will never regret buying good optics for your rifle. It is an investment, a good scope will last your lifetime. For foxing, given that you are shooting a heavy barreled rifle off a bi-pod/rest, and most of the time from a vehicle, a big magnification can be a great help for long distance foxing. Personally most of my foxing is done from high seats or when stalking so I just use my Sako Finnlight 6.5x55 with a 7x50 S&B on it. If you buy a quality , but second hand, rifle with a good actio

Well done that man A very good week indeed ft

Before the snow we had a sleety rain that froze over everything, then the snow. The deer were having it hard. I started seeing roe during the day in the grass fields, browsing round the hedges. The fallow on Bredon Hill (worcs) were hitting sheep feeders hard, pheasant feeders too. I have heard reports of fallow deer with breathing problems being shot nearby and buried. Since the thaw they seem to have recovered well. I had a roe doe out of a bunch of three last wednesday and she had a good covering of fat round her kidneys. ft

You seem dead set on a .243 but I am another 6.5 user. Fallow, roe, muntjac and foxes, it does the lot. Try the guntrader site and look for a second hand rifle and then buy the best scope and binoculars you can afford. Do not rule out second hand glass either, Macleods of Tain have an excellent selection. It may be not what you want to hear, it wasn't what I wanted to hear either, but it is the second best piece of advice i have ever been given. Needless to say i didn't take the advice about the rifle, and I got married too There's no telling me sometimes ft

I use a drop point Gerber for skinning and a Frost's Mora (green) for other work. I used them both this morning dressing a roe doe and i can't practically see any reason why i would want another knife, as these two are really good. Although, being a bit of a knife tart, i am sure I will buy a Cutco sooner or later. ft

deer calibre, .270, .308, 6.5x55 or any others
flytie replied to blackfox's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
I have a 6.5x55 and would not part with it. It does all i want to fallow, roe, muntjac and foxes. I will at some time have another, but boar capable (yes I know they are legal in some places)rifle, and at the moment i favour the 7mm-08. A mate has one and it's a honey ft
