I got a T8 as part of the package I bought and am very happy with it so far. If I was to buy another it would have to a stainless steel one. I believe Wildcat, PES, Border Barrels and ASE all do them in Stainless. Having read the tests that were done in sporting rifle, there is not much between any of them. The new Border Barrels one looks good, and at a reasopnable price. ft

I found the Browning Hi-Power in 9mm very manageable, but much preferred the beretta 92, I found it did not twist as much. I would go with what is freely available where he is. It's pointless ordering something you cannot get ammo or spares for. At close ranges the 9mm should do the job, but the yanks law enforcement have found that it lacks stopping power. This is why they have gone for the .40 cartridge normally delivered by a glock. Accuracy wise at 30yds I favoured the .357 Colt Python. ft

V, They are both people well known to my FEO and both well respected in their professional field. I know you do not need a doctor, lawyer, solicitor to sign your certificate these days, but it does help if they are highly regarded in their field of expertese and have letters behind their name. They are both deerstalkers and have held their certificates for over 30 years each. Having shown yourself to be capable to a full time keeper has to be a plus. I wish you all the best! Regards, ft

I applied for and got a 6.5x55 for deer and fox control as my first rifle I did the DSC1 before I applied for my FAC because I was advised to by my FEO. I had a long wait for my FAC to come through because of the new computer system, it was 13 months near as dammit. I was granted an open ticket because I had good refences from well respected referee's, I had been helping well known stalkers for several years, I had done the DSC1 and had a background in which I had previously used firearms. If you have a similar background why not ask for an open certificate, they can only say no!

I use my lab bitch for beating and picking up. They are not a good as spaniels for thick work, mine bleeds easily when in thick cover, but she is a trier. Go for it and good luck. ft

Scope Preference: Fixed or Variable Magnification
flytie replied to Sterry's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Chalky, the sniper was http://dic.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enwiki/2524516 I use a fixed mag for stalking, 7x50 S&B and it does everything that i need. But would I like a S&B PMII, yes! But I can't afford one. If you are foxing or long range shooting I think it must be an advantage to have a higher mag. ft -
CB, Difficult question! I would have thought more than that, in the 1000's but I have no way to back it up. But seeing as how they are all over the midlands, from Worcestershire over to Norfolk, I would have thought more than 100's. But who knows? I don't! If you find out I would love to know. ft

how true is this story??? shoot a gypo's dog and get no come backs???? very strange especially around evesham....an foa was shot at by our travelling brothers with a high power rifle only six months ago Abso bloomin lutely true! Pm me if you would like Steves (the guy with the shooting rights) number. No more coursing on steves land now, only a local guy after the deer, and we are working on that one. Yours disgustedly, ft edit I do know that you have a serious problem in Shropshire/Herefordshire, I have talked with a keeper at Gatley who told me of a dog skinning episode and

If people are wandering where they shouldn't, they should be challenged. This right to roam nonsense has given too many of the wrong sort the idea that they can go wherever they want. Approching them in a polite manner can result in you being close enough to get the camera phone out and take their pictures. Poachers do not like this, but f**k them, they spoil it for all the folks who have cultivated their farmer contacts for years to get a bit of sport. Poachers do not like to be known, ordinary folks won't mind the camera. It is a bit hard on the dog to shoot it, but in the event

TRYING STALKING WITHOUT A LICENSE....
flytie replied to ROB.BOB's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
243 is the starting caliber. Not that i am being pedantic SS, that's not pedantic. .240 or above would have been pedantic! ft -
TRYING STALKING WITHOUT A LICENSE....
flytie replied to ROB.BOB's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Rob, How long is a piece of string? If you were invited with someone who owns the sporting rights, and if you meet the age requirement? They could, using the estate rifle caveat in the law, allow you to use their rifle as long as you were being supervised by that person. You can book stalking on many estates and use the "estate rifle", this allows people like you to try before you buy. ft -
Grampian Deer Management, High Seats.
flytie replied to flytie's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Just a quick thank you to all who tried to help! I have now spoken to Colin Scott, he is working on the oil rigs and was still away when I tried to contact him. He is going to make high seats again, but is having trouble getting the steel. Thanks again, ft -
Grampian Deer Management, High Seats.
flytie replied to flytie's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Hi Flytie Are you looking for metal or wooden, Stand alone or supporting. Peter Metal, lean-to I think. The grampian one was a lean-to but you could buy a leg kit to turn it into a freestanding one. Looked lovely and seemed a very good design. But never mind. I have had some pm's and have been given the name of a chap in Wincanton. It looks very promising. -
Dear all, Can anyone tell me if Grampian Deer Management who make high seats are still trading? I have been trying to contact Colin Scott on the number provided on their web-site since last Friday. I have e-mailed him too. I wanted to order one of the high seats, but it looks like I might have to look elsewhere unless someone here can help? Regards and thanks in advance, ft

Gossy, I wouldn't think so, too long an interval between ingestion and symptoms. Unless it got blind drunk Having had a read, and talked to some friends, about this I think Jabali must have it right. Staggers is the most likely culprit. ft

Fidgety, That sounds just like the one I bought! Atb, ft

Try this link; http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_barrel.htm And this one; http://hunting.about.com/cs/guns/a/float_bed.htm It explains it better than I can. ft

Elvocan, I know that you really want a new gun, but leaving you some money for a scope does not give you much of a budget. The Remingtons will do for a project, upgrading as you go but I wondered what you could get secondhand that will get you shooting now. I have read on a Varminting web site about the love affairs going on with secondhand Mauser actioned Paker-Hale .308's, they do seem very accurate from what people are saying. You could also try guntrader, there is a nice heavy barrelled Sako on there; Gun Details[This gun was for sale as of 13:36, 05 May 09]Sako .308 75 Action

I meant bigger than the .243, sorry! I wanted a rifle for deer and fox, mainly deer, so i went for the largest calibre that my Police Authority would let me have as a dual purpose rifle. I did apply for a .308 but could not, at the time, have it for foxing too. ft edit; just looked on guntrader and there are over twice as many .243's as there are .308's.

What a cracker, well done Remmy. I will be pleased to know if it is a medal head, it is certainly better than anything of mine. Atb, ft

Mark, we came across two this year when we had a lot of snow (for us anyway). Both died and were not put in the food chain. This site might be of interest to you if you doubt that ungulates are affected by other varieties; http://www.qmscotland.co.uk/analysis/downl...Lambs-nadis.pdf Follow the link to page 9 and 10 and you will see that even the varieties of kale and rape that have smaller amounts of the toxin can still cause trouble. ft
-
If you look on the secondhand market there sems to be more trade in the .243's and .308's than anything else, so i would say they are the most popular. I wanted something bigger so went for the 6.5x55. I think i might like a 7x57 at some time. ft
-
Odd, it sounds like rape/kale sickness which makes them unsteady on their legs and can cause deafness and blindness. I have only found them like this in winter though. Grain/cereal/fruit intoxication can cause the staggers, could it have got at a grain feeder? Or of course, blue tongue can cause lameness, high temp, swelling of the head which can affect hearing too. I will be interested to hear what you find out if you follow this up. Atb, ft

I too use 5's for preference. Rabbits, game, ducks and pigeon. 32g x 5's I must admit that at the moment I am using 30g x 6's, but that was because we bought loads for the shoot syndicate and a couple of guy's did not pay for their share, so my mate and I bought them. Express pigeon special, they work too, if I point them in the right direction. ft
