  1. Steyr, Are you happy that some bloke down the gunshop knows what your firearms department means by its conditions? Would it not be better to ask your FEO and get the full and complete information you need? My FAC states: "6. The 6.5x55mm Rifle and 6.5x55 Sound moderator and ammunition shall be used for deer/fox control and for zeroing on ranges, or land deemed suitable by the Chief Officer of Police for the area where the land is situated and over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot" That is the position of West Mercia, why not ask what your police authorities position
  2. Check first with your FEO! Be Safe, not sorry, that's all I'm saying. There seems to be a lot of confusion about the term "Open Certificate". I clarified the matter with my FEO, I suggest you do the same. There are a lot of people who think it means that they can use a firearm wherever they choose. West Mercia Police disagree, and are prepared to prosecute. ft
  3. Be very careful about some of the advice being given here, not all police authorities apply the law in the same manner. I asked the FEO for our part of Worcs about this when I recieved my open certificate. He informed me that I can shoot over land that has previously been cleared without informing him. But If I get a new permission I am to ring and check with him. Of the eight parcels of land over which I shoot, five needed no further clearance and three did, which involved a site visit from him. He assured me that if I deemed land to be cleared, then shot over it and it had not been c
  4. If you can get them to send it to you as a present, bithday, christmas etc you can sometimes get away with the duty. It normally works out at about 40% of the purchase price if you are stung for duty, and this can make it still worthwhile with some items. ft
  5. If you mean "shooting in" a barrel here is a good link; http://www.border-barrels.com/shoot-in.htm atb, ft
  6. firefly, Show some sense and read the threads Mr L has been very patient and explained how the law has changed. If you do not believe him go onto the BASC site and read about it. You are making a fool of yourself ft
  7. I agree with Snapshot and Mr L, quality secondhand glass is well worth a look. Try here: http://www.rmacleod.co.uk/shoptics.htm Gregor is a sound bloke to deal with and will tell you the truth about what he stocks. I think York Guns deal in second hand optics, as do Sportsman gun centre. Get Gunmart Magazine and check out the small ads. Atb, ft
  8. When keepering on the shoot I have found it amazing how many times I have encountered foxes at close range. But this has mainly been when walking through, or to, woodland. So if you are round the release pens or any other abundant food source foxes are likely to be close enough to shoot with a shotgun. If foxing properly i would use a centrefire. ft
  9. :stupid: Its the white bits on the muzzle that are the give away. ft
  10. 28g of no 6 shot will kill at exactly the same range from either bore. According to the experts, Gough Thomas and Burrard, the shot spread at normal game shooting ranges is exactly the same from either 12 or 20 bore. I patterned my 20 bore 687eel against a 12 bore 687 choked the same and found this to be true. Twentys for game shooting are normally more tightly choked, beretta's normally being 1/4 & 1/2, than the average 12 bore game gun. Do not try and put large shot loads through a 20, they are both heavy on the pocket and shoulder. Non toxic 20 bore loads are extortionally expensive
  11. LG, I bought a 75 because it was cheaper, much cheaper than an 85. I also prefer the stock on the 75, which is widely quoted as being one of the best designed ones on the market. As well as the stock Sako have altered the mag release, the feed (now wrongly being called a controlled feed according to Chuck Hawks) and the recoil lug. I do not think that the alterations have much to do with improving the rifle, but more to do with profits. Why not choose the one you think handles best. Both will be good rifles. I just prefer the 75 and would go out of my way to get one rather than the 85.
  12. I know that they say everything is bigger on your side of the pond, but looking at yon beast, your freezers must be huge too! What a cracking animal Is it right that some moose go mad and kill people? Or am I just imagining being told that? Atb, ft
  13. Anyone tried the Leupold ones? ft
  14. AT, try this link; http://www.pigeon-decoys.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=31 there are many others, but I like this firm, they have never let me down. Monster holdall + bucket seat = £25.70, Complete hide package = £89.00 (twist lock poles +net), Eezzy wobbler pack of 20 = £24.00. But have a trawl through the internet and compare prices, Target sports, decoying.co.uk etc.. Remember, any fool can be uncomfortable. But if I'm spending a few hours decoying, I like to be comfy and not to have to carry too much kit. Being younger and fitter you will put up with discomfort better than me.
  15. [quote name thanks for that ft, my dad said that he would buy me one if i shot 120+ ex 125 at the GB selection shoot at the weekend just gone (clay shooting). i shot 119 & missed the last target out . you can imagine how annoyed i was at that point, 1 clay off getting a free rifle! anyway, get to try again in 2 weeks for it again. if not, i will have to get one my self. thanks again all Best of luck in a fortnight, no pressure then Atb, ft
  16. MJ, you certainly have had a good start to the season welldone ft
  17. Sako, Sako and Sako! Buy the best rifle you can afford, second hand good quality glass is available if you trawl the net, there are several adverts in Gunmart that feature second hand good quality optics too. I bought a really nice S&B 7x50 ex-display that was £250 off the list price, still came with the full warranty. Someone is liable to tell you that Sako and Tikka are the same. They are not, even though they are owned by the same company. Handle them both, check the ridgidity of the stocks then check fit and finish. Then buy the Sako. Atb, ft
  18. When applying for my FAC, during my chat with the FEO I asked about having a .308 for deer and fox. It was mainly for deer but i wanted to shoot foxes if a safe shot presented itself. He said, "NO!". So I went for the 6.5x55 which he would allow and does both splendidly, foxes out to 220yds so far. I do however know someone who has a .308 for fox and deer, but this is not his only rifle and he has been shooting for many, many years. So I voted 2, unlikely (but not impossible). I have been giving some serious thought to what rifles you actually need, opposed to what you want. I thin
  19. I bought my rifle (Sako 75 finnlight in 6.5x55), scope, rings, mod, cleaning kit, ammunition, slip and sling from Macleods, they were the best value in the country. I live on the Gloucestershire/Worcestershire border and I rang all the big dealers. I must have spent a day on the phone in total, but I ended up with a really good deal. I compared them with all the big dealers in Gunmart and they came out on top. They were better than my local dealers by miles, I did go and see them and asked if they could match the price, none could! I will admit I was lucky with the choice of rifle thou
  20. .308 x 160gn ........ As per radio 4 last week, in your area too. Dropped on the spot. You might get your FEO to play ball on a smaller calibre, some do, most don't. ft
  21. Sky Cats advice sounds really good! Have you read Peter Moxons, "Training The Roughshooter's Dog"? If not go to the library and get them to order it for you, it's full of good advice. I bought a copy and it was the best £15.00 I ever spent. I am unwilling to suggest a cure all because i don't think I can judge your dog as well as you can. To make the dummy more appealing you can tie some pheasant/partridge/duck wings on it. But most springers and labs I have known want to carry something in their mouth all the time. Atb, ft
  22. Cheap poles are a nightmare. Buy some twistlock ones with a decent footplate. Then you want some tent pegs and paracord, this will allow you to rig up a hide that will not blow over. I have used all sorts of cammo netting, you do not need anything fancy. I like netting that is at least 5'6" high, 6' for preference but only because I cannot sit hunched up at all. The lightweight new nets are great but not big enough for me, they pack up smaller so are easier to carry. I have one of the new ones that I use as a roof when needed, and an old ex-army one for the main body of the hide. Bu
