  1. Hi Matt. Yes natural is best in my view........or natural as man intended. I trap a lot of vermin in old dry gateway drains....they are a haven for all types of passing traffic. One of my most successful places is a pipe through a very high stone wall it catches rats on an almost nightly basis that try to reach the nearby game cover. Regards Rolfe.
  2. Ok Rolfe, clear enough now, though methinks you piss take with that last photo Maybe just a wee bit Ian Rolfe.
  3. The advice that has been given is very similar if not the same as the DEFRA code of practise on snares and snaring that was published in October 2005. The main point argued is that the snare is deemed a "Holding" device rather than a "Killing" device......hence the need for stops to be fitted to wires and the requirement to site them where there is no chance of "Fatal" entanglement. All the areas where traditionally a clean kill could be obtained : Hedgerows, gateways, fencelines etc. are forbidden and we have now been told that we cannot use them........and what is even more galling....by som
  4. Yes.........duck and chicken would be perfect to lure Charlie back in.......A white chicken is the best bait of all in my opinion.
  5. Snareman is right....he see's the signs through the same eyes as me...........this is what i mean by having an experienced eye for such things. If you look closely at the 3rd picture(in original post) you will see in the bottom left hand corner a beat between the oak leaves.....on the the other side of the fence you can see the other beat.......thus showing the angle the rabbit is passing through the fence. If you look at the wire twists either side of the 3rd square up....they are slightly brighter than the ones in the square the rabbit passes through which have been discoloured by the passin
  6. Stubby Couple of things i would do mate to increase the chances of a catch.....as already mentioned....try bedding the base into the soil a little bit. I would expel the urine from any rabbits i caught into and all over the cage to make it more "attractive" to Charlie........and you may be better off placing it alongside a fence.......or somewhere the fox cannot walk all the way round it. Another point..........it may well be a bin-bag fox.......so household scraps (Chicken carcase) may be a better lure.....! Good Luck Rolfe
  7. you'd look for fur caught on the wire, and/or discolouration on the wire from rabbits passing through Exactly Stubby......... But also the padded beats on both sides of the wire clearly show the square the rabbits are passing through and also the exact angle. Again.......it is all down to knowing the signs to look for and that is what is termed "Fieldcraft"......and this cannot be taught........it has to be learned from practical experience out in the field. It is hard to explain but it obvious to see to the experienced eye. Rolfe
  8. Somebody asked me a while back about snaring rabbits along a fence line (sorry can't remember who it was) and i said I would post some pictures showing the way rabbits pass through a fence at different angles and heights depending on the vegetation and ground cover. To all you experienced snarers out there I apologise for explaining the bleeding obvious, but i am always aware that there are youngsters and newbies out there who may not have the benefit of years of snaring experiences as we do Picture 1: Shows the rabbits are passing UNDER the bottom wire. Picture 2: Shows the rabbits are j
  9. Hi Rolfe, can joe public buy this Bromadiolone rat poison. Rats in the roof space have been a real pain round here at times. They use the soffit to run the length of the block. The Council guy came the last time but it was after the rats had been there for ages. Is it feasable to leave the area baited permanently?. I've shot them etc, but never got as sophisticated as bait stations. Bromadiolone (0.005%) is just the active ingredient........I use Contrac (Trade Name) pellets......Bells Lab produce it. No persons (unless proof of training is provided,) should be able to buy it from the la
  10. Hi Donk, A couple of questions i would be asking are: If the noise is heard continually throughout the night then it is almost certain to be rats or mice. If the noise is heard shortly after dusk......then goes quiet.......then starts again at dawn it is usually squirrels. I find rats in the roof space a common problem nowadays.......and you have been shown a picture of squirrel droppings which are not as uniform or neat as rat droppings tend to be. Squirrels tend to sleep at night and this is usually the best indication as to what is in the roof space. Squirrel.......cage trap it in the r
  11. Hi TOMMO, Give Bill Fountain ring on 01604 250035...or 07885 734511 He does a lot for the NPTA and has negotiated some good rates. He is a good guy to talk too and will give you sound advice. Regards Rolfe.
  12. I would reccomend you re-sharpen your points the taper is to acute (all right for pencils) the taper should be 21/2 - 3 " long. When your poles have dried out harden the points in the ashes of a wood fire for a few minutes. As for the poles being straightened I would reccommend you only cut straight ones to begin with, cut more than what you need tie them all together for drying out so they dry straight, cut them 30" long. Scrap the bark off the top of the poles for about 4" , put a slot in the top like a gypsys wooden peg. This is for pushing the top line into when setting the long net. There

  19. Fungus looks like........Ganoderma Applanatum.........Artist's Fungus........ could be wrong as it is similar to many. Rolfe
  20. I use them anywhere there is a high risk of catching non-target species. Other than that i use traditional wires, but as Ian B alluded too..........I can see the day coming when it will become a legal requirement. Rolfe
  21. Obviously another graduate from the "Warrener" school of successful snaring techniques.......and has passed with distinction Should go far this chap................as far as possible Regards Rolfe
  22. Cheers for that...........i knew you would know...........many thanks. Rolfe.
  23. No Stuffed Koala Bear......or Aboriginal inscribed Boomarang brought home for me from Australia.........Nope.........an antique rat trap was much more in keeping me thinks. Based on our "Little (big) Nipper" design it has a conical shaped very powerful spring mechanism that i have not seen before. Maybe OTC can say if it is a common spring to use on this break-back type of trap? Rolfe.
  24. Say nowt Tracey............just get down on your knees
