For years i have used this hand forged........(carbon steel if my memory serves me well) horn handled knife made by "Malcberry".........it is one of their 1897 series of knives. Rolfe.

Lloydy it was probably a sparrow that you saw.......had you been on the magic mushrooms again. :clapper: It may have been an escapee bird........but if it was indeed a Golden Eagle then you want to report it mate. I thought they were confined to the highlands of Scotland but i may be wrong. Rolfe.

I knew someone would come up with the answer ;) Cheers John........I can catch moles......and count money......but after that zilch.

Another point often overlooked is that a really heavily infested grazing/pasture field can lose large areas of suitable grazing due the molehills covering the grass. If every mole hill measured 12 in diameter and the field contained 1000+ tumps, there would be a massive reduction in viable grazing.........(well someone cleverer than me could work out the total area lost)..........but it is one heck of a lot of grazing to lose. As far as i can make out the practise of saluting a magpie is supposed to ward off bad luck. The solitary magpie is deemed to have had the bad luck of losing it's mate.......hence the One For Sorrow......Two For Joy etc. The salute is supposed to ward of this bad luck....as is saying Good Morning Mr Magpie How are you Today etc. There are also other religious thoughts as well.........like the magpie was the only bird not on the Ark....or at Christs crucifixion etc. The black and white colouration is also said to be the good (white) and evil (black) and the colours worn when mourning. Old Ratcatching Method is a Huge Success
Rolfe replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Sorry........couldn't resist it...........it was a picture of my next door neighbour just before he went to a fancy dress party as the Pied-Piper.... taken last summer. I said i could get him some real rats but he declined the generous offer. Rolfe. -
This method seemed to work some years ago......when an entire town was cleared of rats. Might be worth a try if the rats are becoming resistant to the anticoagulants as they predict. ;) :o  Rolfe

As Stubby say's pack in ferreting then until you can afford a locator. Muzzles on ferrets you must be joking. Can you imagine if the ferret got trapped in a block end behind a few rabbits........or wandered off from an unseen bolt hole to die a long lingering death being unable to feed or defend itself. No......i would never muzzle a ferret and work a bury or warren with it. :( Rolfe.

Always ask first if it is ok to use snares........some farmers are very fussy about it........also make sure that the areas you set them have no access to livestock or dog walkers etc. I tend to use them in the places that are awkward to get at to ferret or where rabbits are coming from adjoining land. Rolfe.

You Take the pee.......never  It's a cold hard life at times catching moles........but in the summer it is one of the best jobs going for sure. Right... need to warm me hands up. ;)

Just wondered how fellow molecatchers were doing during this cold snap. I have had some good results despite the ground freezing solid in some areas. I have just come in from checking a few traps to some football pitches and a large garden and had a mole in every trap that had been triggered. I was using the Talpex type traps and was covering them completely over the top so it looked like another mole hill. This helps disguise the traps (especially to the football pitches) and stops them getting stolen........also it alows the traps to operate as normal underground as only the outside crust of

Well according to the HGCA Leaflet on Field Margins i have interpreted the following (I think) There has to be a compulsory field margin 2mtr from the centre of the hedge line......or from the centre of the watercousre should there be a dyke. After that you can collect points for the Stewardship schemes depending on what else you do. You can make a Buffer Strip of anywhere between 2-6 mtrs wide and plant various grasses to encourage wildlife such as: farmland birds, game birds, bees, butterflies. beetles. spiders etc. Set-a-side strips....these can be 6-10 mtrs wide and these will attract the
-
Yes apparently there are all manner of different set ups to attract wildlife and insects.......the farm has got a list as i say and i will be interested to see it myself.
-
Yeah, they do here as well.......but they have now got several names.......depending what you are trying to encourage there are ladybird strips. bee strips etc......all have to be planted with different grasses to attract certain species...i will get a comprehensive list from the farm that spells them all out and get back to you

colin, if rolfe has set the wire looking outwards the way that the rabbits are travelling , you will get an accurate setting but he has taken the picture looking from the front of the snare so it can at times look like that as if its a bit overlying, although its set properly. Yes that's the way it is set Glenn......correct Also the run has a slight curve to it.....which again makes the setting appear overlying. These "Buffer Strips" although intended to improve the wildlife habitat are an absolute snaring paradise as the rabbits are forced to use the same pathways between the rough gra

Its the angle the picture was taken You don't think i would dare put up a picture of a wrong setting on here Glenn would have my guts for garters

I have just been able to put a few wires out today on some well used rabbit runs that come from the other side of the dyke and out on to the feeding ground. Fortunately for me......the rabbits have to cross the 4 metre wide "Buffer Strip" that is now common place around most arable fields, and these are excellent snaring places as the runs are so distinct. In one of the pictures you can see where the rabbits run down the far bank of the dyke and jump across the water and then cross the buffer strip where the wires are waiting to intercept them. So...... if you have any of these buffer strips

Just remember......... that a trapped hare will make enough noise to wake the dead Rolfe.

Yes Please Calm down Rolfe, a threesome in a rat infested room sounds not bad, but one on your back and the other holding your hands, ! that needs working on Try anything once Ian Twice if i like it

If you have permission to be where you are using it then a long net or purse nets are perfectly legal. He may be thinking back to the days when the long net was the traditional tool of the night time rabbit poachers. Rolfe.

No snow around when that damage was done........but the surrounding fields had been left set-a-side......so there was poor feeding around. TOMMO.........the Ash trees certainly were the favourite. Rolfe.

Here's some damage to a 3.8 hectare area of woodland i had to clear the rabbits from.......all the trees made a full recovery by the way.
