Few More Observations On Fence Snares
Rolfe replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Yes Ian............i just use a staple hammered into the rail to hold the wire. -
I ventured forth today for an hour with the dogs and the camera having been laid low over christmas with this dreaded flu virus thingy that's about......it's the first time i have felt like doing anything to be honest as it certainly knocked me for six. One again i apologise to the experienced snaremen and women out there for pointing out the "bleeding obvious" but it may just help some of those beginning to learn the art of snaring to avoid some potential pit-falls. I found a perfect example of where old brock had just about managed to squeeze underneath the fence wire using an existing rab

Well it's that time of year again.....Another few hours and yet another Merry Christmas will be put to bed for another 12 months (Yippee i hear you cry). It's been a bit quiet on the forum so thought i would put some pictures up of my working team It is a pleasure to be out with these three as they work as a team and seem to all understand their roll in life and what they are expected to do. Firstly the wee terrier...she is a border/russell cross and is gamekeeper bred. She belongs to my Ex really.......but spends most of her working time with me. I have tried in vain to let her have her coa

The beat or trod........is where the rabbits feet lands as he is travelling along a run......like little stepping stones in the grass. These are quite distinct near the rabbit buries........and can get harder to see the further out they go, but it is above the beat that the wire is set (not between the beats) As Ian has said........get Woodgas DVD.....or read Glenns articles on the site.......these will clarify it for you.......! Some pictures of some quite distinct rabbits runs

Looking good Tracey as usual..........those are some of the heaviest chickens i have seen and they look realy good all dressed out and ready go. Well done to all involved. Bet that lot cost a pretty penny to feed up every day.......but just look at the results........Can't beat a good looking bird. Best Wishes Rolfe.

Just to add..........never be afraid to try odd locations to set cages. Here are a few examples of settings......one was in a much used run through in a flower bed......the cages didn't need baiting in the end as the rabbits just tried to run though the gap under the dwarf conifers. Another.........alongside a garage wall in a clients garden where the rabbits were entering and leaving the property. And one was where rabbits were leaving a dense impenetrable bank set.......i just blocked their normal run..........and forced them to use the one where the cage was positioned.

Carrot has to be the bait of choice..........parsnip and swede also work at times. Cornflakes work at times as does the dried rabbit food you can buy from petfood shops........Only drawback with the last two is it needs to be dry weather or you end up with a soggy mess. I run a permanent trap line of between 10-30 cages on one of my contracts, depending on rabbit activity...........and have always found sliced carrot the best draw. The secret to cage trapping rabbits is firstly finding the correct setting position (may entail several moves to get it right), and secondly.....leaving the cages f

A friend of mine here in Northampton (an experienced falconer) has just lost his much loved male Harris due to an unfortunate accident after an encounter with a rabbit whilst out working him. Has anyone or does anyone know of someone who has a male/female Harris for sale (or a red-tail).........if you do........please PM me and i will pass details on so as you can make arrangements etc. Kind Regards Rolfe.

About 21 inches Malt.........all mine have been about that in the past..........but nothing is 100% certain with some crosses Hope he turns out as good as mine mate........they are a lovely cross for rabbiting dogs. Regards Rolfe

Just look at the size of that untensioned noose also...........maybe Old Pat was advising him

The post was made invisible because you and others were discussing the ILLEGAL act of hunting deer with dogs. The mere fact that you or others may mention "Pre-Ban" in some posts holds no water with any of the Mods on this site, you know as well as we know this is pure and utter b***cks...... We are at present trying very hard to clean up the site so as it is seen to be all legal and above board so it is still here for present and future members to enjoy. The site very nearly got closed down permanently once before................I and the rest of the Mods will not let this happen. Hope th

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.......... Rolfe.

Second day........Another 8 rabbits............still..........They will be an expensive 16 rabbits by the time they get their invoice Can't see where anyone could lamp or longnet outside the wood as its surrounded by deep ploughing, and not really ideal snaring territory either. Just possible someone could have shot over the ferrets......but not really any signs of activity, cartridges etc. Only other thing is........we have had an awful lot of rain, and the water table is really high alongside the ditchside buries..........so maybe they had been flooded out and moved to higher ground. One o

Tracey.........Unfortunately you will always get f*ck wits, dim wits....and Little Sh*ts........that just want to disrupt the chatroom and cause as much trouble as they can. Gradually they are being weeded out, and booted from the THL...and the sooner the better in my opinion. You do a great job, and have succeeded in turning the chat room round by removing at the first opportunity those that would love to see the site closed down. Well done and keep up the good work..... Best Wishes Rolfe

Happy Birthday Glenn, Have a great day (and put your feet up and relax for an hour or two)....... Best Wishes Rolfe.

Just started a 2/3 day Contract to clear rabbits from an area of mature woodland and had an absolute sh*t day. The buries had been cleared of undergrowth a week previously (just some, not all of them) and everything looked set for a very high catch rate. The buries were extremely well used, with fresh droppings and they had that "lived in" look about them. Most buries were 20/30 holes.........So it was simple to purse net and to encircle with the 75yd Quick-Set. Ferrets were entered.......2 really experienced Jills.........and NOTHING.......Well 8 rabbits for a days ferreting to be precise.

Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like no one is watching.

Just had another first for me.......trying to shoot jackdaws that were stripping the straw from a thatched cottage roof. Because thatch nowadays has to be replaced with like for like apparently......the client had to use straw on the roof and the jackdaws were pulling the ears through the wire netting looking for grain. So there I sat for an hour.......in a wicker chair with the trusty Theoben 1.77 across my knee peering through a half opened Velux roof light. The wind was howling through the opening........and if I had been a brass monkey.........I would have been off in search of nuts.....

Welcome Richie..........enjoy the site and ask anything you are not sure about.........there will be someone on here who will know the answer for sure..........and many more that think they do Regards Rolfe.

She's about 3 years old mate.

Wouldn't think rats are the problem........unless they are eating all the feed before the birds get a look in. Partridges are notoriously difficult to hold in a particular area at the best of times........they may have just wandered off in search of another food outlet. Rolfe.

You won't get rabbits running far during a hard frost........so possibly try again when the cold spell is over. Like all trapping..........the weather plays a big part in getting a successful outcome. It's all a learning exercise so keep at it and remember......."There is no short-cut to obtaining experience" Rolfe.

3/4 Collie/Greyhound........with a touch of Saluki somewhere along the line........as near as i can tell you......her ancestry is a bit murky (like mine)

The hard frost last night made for a fantastic walk this morning.......what a glorious day for a mooch along the hedgerows to survey some fields a farmer wants me to control the rabbits on. There is an old fence that runs the length of one field and the rabbits are doing imense damage to the winter wheat crop on the other side of the pasture field. It is a snaring paradise with well defined runs passing through some rough cover at the base of the fence line, (Glenn would give his right arm to have a crack at these beauties ) The dogs had a bit of sport too.....although they never caught a sin
