So sorry to hear this very sad news. Could you please pass on our condolences to all his family, friends, and loved ones from all of The Hunting Life Team, Moderators. and Admin.
Rolfe.
I was called out to investigate the cause of this damage to the newly laid floor covering.......could it be mouse he enquired?
Yes...........a ruddy great big one though i replied Huge rat was found dead in the kitchen a day later. It had obviously got in during the re-furbishment of the house and couldn't get out again
A Bee Stung me the other week........charged me £8.00 for a jar of honey
But seriously..........Yes........every season i do several hundreds wasp nests and maybe get stung once or twice, usually when taking the clobber off though. That said..........last season i never got stung once so heres hoping
Rolfe.
Looks like "Click beetle" to me. Female lays up to 300 eggs in soil.....where the larvae are better known as wireworms. Sometimes has a metalic sheen to it but can vary greatly in colour
Took this wasp nest from a fence yesterday.......they had built it in the clematis. Just have to admire the work the little buggers put into the constructon. The grubs can be clearly seen.......these are much sort after by the chub fishermen as a favourite bait.
Well Tracey........I always thought her belt didn't go though all the loops..........now i'm chuffing certain  Well i hope she don't ask for a stiff one at the "Never quite made it to 100" party But knowing the crazy bugger she'll be off on a wee bender for sure............Oh Happy Days. :drink:
Traditionally the winter months was the time to cut sticks as the sap was at it's lowest then, also the long straight wands are more visible to the naked eye. In reality........if you see a good stick or potential long net peg then cut it anyway....otherwise someone may beat you to it. I am lucky in as much as i have a lot of hazel that only I have access to and this i try and use in rotation. With careful management i have a constant supply of walking stick shanks and long and purse net pegs.
Rob,
What he means is genuine......you have sold yourself well and if you lived nearer you could come out with me anytime. You have shown commitment and a willingness to learn and don't pretend to know more than you do.......which in my book goes a long way. I hope someone takes you under their wing and shows you the CORRECT way to set traps and snares because you will be a good pupil.
Good luck mate
Rolfe
Yep.......as per norm..........nest destroyed(solvent spray) .........Ficam W sprayed over area wasp nest removed from......Ficam D around access points.......
John........i have a guy up the road that practicaly begs me for wasp grubs for chub fishing, and being an ex-fisherman i can vouch for how deadly they are. Most of the nests are too contaminated to use the grubs but i do manage to get him one or two during the season.
Yes........nest all treated and removed. Obviously there were sufficient workers away from the nest at the time of treatment (and maybe the queen) and their instinct is to keep building. I have had it only happen twice in all the years i have been treating wasp nests.......and i usually do between 300-400 every season.
Thats a lot of nests per season! Maybe you have learnt something from this experience?
Maybe a few people have........including your good self ;)
Chewed wood bark.......mixed with saliva to make a type of wasp "Paper" They can often be seen (and heard) chewing wood off of garden furniture or fence panels.

Snapped this Partridge as it walked about picking up grit from the roadway. Lovely looking birds.....! (At long range optical zoom so not as clear as i would have liked).......!
I Was called out last week to remove a wasp nest from a play house........(the large nest in the pictures) ...but the little devils have returned to re-build their nest. You can see the remains of the old larger nest just above the electric cable in the picture. Needless to say this was also removed.
No.........quite legal.......as long as you do not cause undue stress and suffering and food and water is provided for the welfare of the animal until such time as you can remove it.
Cheers for that mate. whats the best way of dispatchinor releasing ?
Cheers
Well i don't advocate releasing it......and to be honest you shouldn't be attempting to catch any animal that you are unsure about humanely dispatching.

Nice pictures.........lovely when the chicks are that small. Trouble is around here that they are cutting the meadows for silage when the chicks are at their most vunerable.
Oh there's a few of us about.......doing what we love most of all.......being out in the wilds and working alongside nature with ferrets nets and dogs The picture is me from a DVD production trying to be a Victorian poacher.....oh for the old days
