  1. Straight Hazel.........lasts years........cut to desired length..........drill.......sharpen........job done.
  2. Glad to see you are still "At it" Tracey............good pictures them........how do you get the bees to keep still? I suppose you keep the squirrels still by showing them your nuts Great pictures though...........they really are. Rolfe.
  3. You can fool some of the people some of the time........but...... ;)
  4. Must have died of a heart attack
  5. Took this beauty from a hedge today.........about as big as a football.......certainly some big wasps in this one.
  6. Peppers look good Tracey..........the only way to learn is to get out there and do it........it's all a learning curve at the end of the day. Get your hands dirty and just keep trying different things until you get it right..........you have made a good start anyway. I would ditch the snails though Trace.........certainly won't help the lettuces  Great pictures by the way..........glad your getting the hang of your new camera. Rolfe.
  7. These were brought in on an infested mattress from another property.......cheaper than buying a new one they thought. But they haven't had my invoice yet.......
  8. I was called in by one of my regular customers (a local letting agents) to treat a brand new apartment for fleas. I duly arrived and the occupants...... a very pleasant young couple........were complaining they had been bitten. The guy showed me the welts and weals on his arms and legs........and it was apparent these were NOT flea bites. I asked to see the mattress in the bedroom and it was obviously completely infested with Bed-Bugs........yuk......horrible nasty critters. Quick phone call to the letting agent.........to get the bed and mattress removed and dumped..........after it had been
  9. Rough up the end of the trigger pin with a bit of emery paper or coarse sand paper and it will stop it self-firing. If you hang them outside for a few weeks to "weather" then you won't have to do this as the oils acquired during manufacture and all odours will have been removed. you can short cut the process by boiling the traps......but i just let the weather do the job for me.
  10. Nice pictures Tracey............Recognise Whitby Abbey..........You can see why Bram Stoker based Dracula stories on it........spooky eh. Good little cameras them .......... Rolfe.
  11. I agree with Ian on this one.......many many times i have seen rabbits shy away from bright new snares set both in a fence line and as peg snares out in the open. That said.........i have also caught 100's of rabbits in bright brand new wires. I think weather conditions play a big part.......dark windy nights in rough grass and even the brightest wire will become invisible..........On still nights with a bright moon.........or summer nights when it stays light late......they become far more visible. I tend to hang my wires outside to dull down a bit before use........it can't do any harm as i
  12. This Crash Helmet one was quite unusual Sue..........under a settee.........was another.
  13. I had a really busy day treating wasp nests today........this one was number 10. Client reported wasps going into a garden shed........and i expected to find one hanging up. After a bit of searching i located it.........it was inside a plastic childs cooker ..........good job the kids never opened the oven door..........bugger did they come at me. The picture shows the nest insitu and after i took it out of the oven.........!
  14. Averaging 5-6 a day at present.........very busy here.
  15. Make one out of an old small drawer or 4 pieces of wood........just fix a fine wire mesh over the bottom.......you can get sheets of fine mesh (about 5mm) from Wickes or similar.
  16. well i will have to rive up some hazel and make a few setting sticks sounds about the same as making broaches for thatching. so is garden peat better than soil as its lighter? You want to make a setting stick about 8-10 inches long and about 10mm thick as in the picture....you don't have to make it a work of art like me........i just like carving wood. Personally the sieved soil from the rabbit hole is as good as anything as the stones are all removed prior to sprinkling over the trap plate.
  17. Use a setting stick........a thin piece of hazel with a tapered end to slip under the trap plate whilst covering with fine soil (Keeping the saftey catch on) When you have covered the trap, gently smooth over the hole the stick came from and expose the saftey catch.......USING THE SETTING STICK.......flick the saftey catch off. This way you can NEVER catch your fingers...Also....you don't have to set fine at all for bunnies..........they are plenty heavy enough to fire the trap Rolfe.
  18. Rolfe, Just interested to know if you have been back to check to see if the bees survived? Andy Will be checking it tomorrow ..........i will keep you posted
  19. Congratulations and best wishes to you both ....! Regards Rolfe.
  20. If setting for rabbits then they should be set within the overhang of the rabbit hole to comply with legislation, have a look at these pics to give you some idea. Clear the hole of stones etc., bed the trap into the tunnel floor well back in the hole, cover with fine soil so the hole looks completely natural, then hopefully you will be rewarded by a catch.
  21. Bill..........if you have a tree in your garden, what the birds are trying to do is land on the REFLECTION of the tree....thinking they can fly from one to the other. I had it with woodpigeons in my garden last year, only had the one hit the window this year so they're learning Don't think there is a lot you can do to stop it really.......maybe a brightly coloured internal blind may help. Regards Rolfe.
  22. Cheeky buggers get everywhere lass........that's a first......seen plenty in bird boxes.......but never in a house martins nest. Here's one before I cut it from a hedge this afternoon...........beautiful aren't they.
  23. Always store them UNSET......the spring is not under tension for long periods.
  24. I was called in to sort out a huge Bumble Bee nest that was located under an old beer crate at the back of a barn that was waiting to be cleared of rubbish..........but the workmen daren't go in It would have been easy to have destroyed the colony if i had wished too.........but due to the scarcity of these endearing little creatures i decided to save as many as i could and take the entire nest to another location where they may at least have a chance of survival. So after moving a ton of rubbish i managed to expose the nest and pick up as much of it as i could and placed it in a bucket to t
  25. Driving through a remote village todayI spotted this rather unique signpost..........it's not a spoof it really does exist, it has obviously been refurbished and is awaiting the lettering to be added. Good job I knew where i was going
