    It's cheaper to fly from Newcastle to New York than to get the train from Newcastle to London on a standard fare. Doesnt affect me, I haven't been on a train since 1977. Im pretty ambivalent about strikes....if it's for better conditions and fairer pay, fine.....if it's political to bring down a democratically elected government, then no. What pisses me off is barristers wanting a 25% pay rise out of the legal aid fund....they can go f**k themsellves, when was the last time anyone saw a barrister in a food bank ? Cheers.

    It was the year I was born, but the appeal and the fight for a posthumous pardon went on for years. It was a miscarriage of justice, no doubt, Bentley was under arrest at the time of the fatal shot. He wouldn't have been charged these days, let alone hanged. There's a good movie about it. Cheers.

    You don't even have to commit the crime, just take Derek Bentley, when a policeman caught Bentley and Craig doing a burglary, Craig pointed a gun at the policeman, who said "give me the gun". Bentley told Craig "let him have it" , Craig then shot the policeman dead . Craig was found guilty of murder, but as he was 16 at the time, he didn't hang. Bentley , who was 18, was found guilty of "being party to the crime" and hanged. The prosecution said "let him have it" meant "shoot him" but the defence said it meant " give him the gun".     We had a big Welsh contingent in Saudi, from B.A. In Cardiff, and I remember one of their wives on her first day on the beach at the Red Sea. She said " if you close your eyes you would think you were in Barry Island" You can take the girl out of Wales.......but you can't take Wales out of the girl !!! ??? !!! Cheers.

    We were supposed to ground all aircraft if the temperature reached 50, but the Saudi metrology office thermometer never seemed to go above 49 ! ? ! Highest we independently recorded was 52. Cheers.

    In 2008 oil was $130 per barrel, petrol was £1:19 per litre. In 2022 oil is $130 per barrel, petrol is £1.90 per litre. Go figure........... Cheers.

    I was mooching about in the old suq in Jeddah and found a breach loading Enfield rifle. It was dated 1892 and had the British military stamp, so I'd say it had definitely been used in the Arab Revolt during the First World War, who knows maybe by Lawrence himself, his house was only yards away ! Anyhow, the guy wanted 1500 riyals for it, about £300, and wouldn't budge so I left it. I wish I hadn't, it would have made a great display and talking point in the man cave ! Cheers.

    An old pal of mine did a stint as bodyguard to a Yemani politician back in the 80's; You could buy AK's everywhere, no I.D. No checks, just pay the asking price and away you go ! Cheers.

    I put a Bedouin bred Saluki over a wild desert dog and kept a smooth black pup that looked like a stocky whippet. I put the same saluki over the pup, father/ daughter mating, and all the pups looked like pure fawn coloured Salukis. Havent a clue how those pups turned out. Cheers.

    A good film, but a few factual inaccuracies. I worked with some Somali mechanics in the Middle East, they were good lads, very pro British, but even they said Somalia was a shithole. Cheers.

    Well said ? I had my last two lurchers put down due to illness and at 70 I had thoughts about giving up the game, but that didn't last long and I got myself a deer/grey pup. The pup, the poultry and my Allotments mean I'm still very active, out every day........better than sitting watching daytime telly and wondering what might have been ! Cheers.

    It's a very interesting subject, but something I know very little about, but if you look at certain human demographics who marry close relatives, such as those of south Asian descent who regularly marry first cousins, the physical deformities and mental deficiencies in the offspring are far, far higher than in unrelated offspring. Isnt this the reason incest is taboo ? Cheers.
